The International Day of Light is a day that aims to promote scientific cooperation and harness the potential of science to foster peace and sustainable development. It’s celebrated on May 16th each year to commemorate the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman. To celebrate we decided to highlight some projects we worked on that focus on education, advanced manufacturing, and a museum where science, technology and the humanities come together. The large-scale, spiral ramp at Bloomberg HQ ascends six floors above the vortex to the central skylight. The ramp serves as a “chandelier” providing ambient light to the atrium. Linear LED fixtures are recessed behind custom bronze louvers at the underside of each step to further enhance the warmth of the bronze material and to provide illumination to the adjacent work spaces on each level. The London Mithraeum located at Bloomberg HQ in the UK - when construction began, archeologists uncovered over 17,000 antiquities and worked to reinstate the temple in its original location and creating a museum experience around it. These photos are at the Mezzanine Level where projected figures emerge magically from the shadows into light. The god Mithras, the altar, and the temple foundation are reproduced in translucent resin and sit atop interactive displays. The CIGI Campus is located on the only site in Canada with three Governor General Award-winning buildings, the former Seagram Museum, which was adapted to house CIGI, and the Perimeter Institute and the Clay and Glass Museum. The Balsillie School for International Affairs is one part of the CIGI campus offering a contemporary interpretation of a quad building with the landscaped courtyard being a focus for the building. The vision of patron Jim Balsillie was that this be a vibrant sanctuary for students and faculty. The David Rubenstein Treehouse at Harvard University is currently under construction, and is an expressive mass timber structure, officially the first on Harvard’s campus. From Studio Gang “With visible wood columns and beams, the design establishes a different kind of hub for convening: a low-carbon, biophilic destination that energizes conversation, collaboration, and the wider neighborhood through embracing its community and outdoor environment. Targeting ILFI Living Building Challenge Core Green Building certification, as well as the ILFI LBC Materials Petal, the Treehouse uses passive green strategies and state-of-the-art systems to combat carbon pollution and make the best use of Earth’s resources. Sustainable system include an operable self-shading façade that reduces overall energy demand while bringing natural light deep into the interior and rooftop PV panels that provide an on-site clean power source for the Treehouse’s all-electric systems. The pair shares DNA, but each has its own distinct character and purpose in constant dialogue with its counterpart. The original Broad was conceived as an unfolding experience starting in the lobby, traveling up the escalator piercing the vault, landing in the third-floor gallery immersed in the collection, then snaking down through collection storage on the way back to the street. Northwestern University, Kellogg Business School’s lighting elevates the concept of “structure in motion” by emphasizing the undulating exterior wood soffits and by creating a rhythm of lighting systems unique to the specific programmatic needs of each space type. When it is deployed, the shell of The Shed creates a 17,200 sq ft light, sound, and temperature controlled hall that transforms to whatever it needs to accommodate. For the highly collaborative NYC office of @wiedenkennedy - @work.ac researched and found that while advertising agencies have always been at the forefront of cutting-edge office design, no single workplace trend has replaced those that came before. We are pleased to announce that the @mitmuseum is one of two recipients for the 2024 Building Museums Symposium’s Buildy Awards. For Sotheby’s it was important that the renovation of this prominent auction house developed a more efficient lighting system that would allow for the utmost flexibility. The lighting of this elegant 5th Avenue lobby is luminous, allowing the architectural volumes to seemingly contract and expand. The linear coves bring focus to the sinuous curved glass and stone elements. Energy code limitations, limited plenum depth, extremely tight radii, and the desire to keep the articulated cove widths as minimal as possible added to our technical challenge. We are so honored to be collaborating on the South Battery Park City Resiliency Project, that is now the 13th park in the nation to have achieved Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines (WEDG) Verification from @waterfrontalliance. The WEDG is a national rating system and is considered the gold standard for resilient, ecological, and accessible waterfront design. Directly from Waterfront Alliance, “South Battery Park Resiliency reduces flood risks for Wagner Park, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, Pier A Plaza, the northern border of the Historic Battery, and numerous residential and commercial properties. While a massive project of its own, the project is part of a larger set of integrated coastal flood risk management projects through the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency Master Plan.
