Diller Scofidio + Renfro: “Columbia University Medical Center’s new, state-of-the-art medical and graduate education building, the Roy and Diana Vagelos Education Center, will open to faculty and students on August 15, 2016 for the start of the fall term. Designed by the New York-based interdisciplinary design studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with Gensler as executive architect, the Vagelos Education Center is a 100,000-square-foot, 14-story glass tower that incorporates technologically advanced classrooms, collaboration spaces, and a modern simulation center to reflect how medicine is taught, learned, and practiced in the 21st century. The design seeks to reshape the look and feel of the Medical Center campus, and also create spaces that facilitate the development of skills essential for modern medical practice. The building is named in recognition of the generosity of an initial lead gift from P. Roy Vagelos, MD, a distinguished alumnus of Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, and his wife, Diana Vagelos, an alumna of Barnard College and the Vice Chair of the Trustees of Barnard College. Broad Gallery 2018 Diller Scofidio & Renfro - this has to be one of the most extraordinary buildings of recent times. It’s hard to explain how beautiful the light is inside this building. The exterior screen concrete dominate the interior but filters light beautifully into it. I tried to show it in the last photo. Visits to the Broad Museum are a delight. Its subtly perforated facade forms a svelte contrast to Gehry’s dramatic Disney Concert Hall up the street. It was commissioned by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad to display their extensive art collections. Once inside, visitor access is choreographed in an orderly fashion, and you can memorably glide in a smoothly plastered tube up to the brightly lit galleries. Alternately there is a glazed cylindrical elevator to whisk you up to gallery level. The spacious galleries display works from the Broad family’s extensive collections, and are enlivened with natural lighting, which passes through the perforated concrete of the museum’s facade. The museum was designed by architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro in 2015, and a recently planned addition by the same architects is underway, which will add another dimension to the burgeoning Grand Avenue Arts Corridor. The US Olympic and Paralympic Museum, designed by @diller_scofidio_renfro in partnership with @andersonmasondale, draws inspiration from the energy and grace of Team USA athletes while reflecting inclusive values. Its dynamic spiraling form allows visitors to continuously descend galleries, making it highly accessible. The facade features over 9,000 folded diamond-shaped aluminum panels, each unique in size and shape, arranged to create a taut skin that wraps around four petal-like volumes. When illuminated by sunlight, the panels create gradients of color and shade, enhancing the building's sense of motion and dynamism. Since opening nearly ten years ago, The Broad has welcomed more than 5.5 million visitors to Bunker Hill. Now, the museum looks toward its second decade with expansion plans that would greatly increase its exhibition space Yesterday, The Broad's founding director Joanne Heyler announced plans to add 55,000 square feet of new construction at the rear of the museum complex, on what is now unused area overlooking Hope Street to the west. Given the museum's existing 120,000-square-foot facility, the project would represent a 70 percent increase in The Broad's size. Diller Scofidio + Renfro, which designed the original museum building, is returning for the sequel. When it is deployed, the shell of The Shed creates a 17,200 sq ft light, sound, and temperature controlled hall that transforms to whatever it needs to accommodate. L’Observatoire Intl provided the lighting design for the Alice Tully Concert Hall, the school and surrounding public spaces. The lighting concept brings a nocturnal identity while unifying the public spaces. Inside the concert hall, the lighting is hidden behind the walls’ resin panels, making the walls themselves emit light. Its predominant color, red, draws one’s attention to the stage, in anticipation of the upcoming performance while simultaneously creating a warm, intimate atmosphere as visitors enter the space. Went to The Broad with my parents. They were impressed by Robert Therrien’s “Under the Table” and Jeff Koons but didn’t think Ellsworth Kelly deserved to be there. When we stepped out, they looked next door at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and said “now, that’s an amazing structure.” I said “No, Franky Gehry is the worst.” (I also wish they would’ve picked Therrien’s green folding chairs and table for The Broad. V&A ( @vamuseum) East Storehouse in London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Appointed by executive architect @austinsmithlord, ORSA is the Principal Designer Advisor for the main build and is retained by the V&A team to support the movement of their art artifacts into the storehouse. The V&A East Storehouse will revolutionise museum archives and storage, showcasing treasures previously hidden from public view. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, it will house 250,000 objects, 350,000 books, and 1,000 archives from the V&A collection. Visitors will be able to explore behind the scenes and see objects that help make sense of the past, present, and future. Life can be like running a marathon. I've never even thought about running one. Maybe if I'm being chased by a knife-yeilding Lorena Bobbitt-inspired ex, then I would do my best to run the 26.2 miles. Sore feet and bleeding nipples sound a lot better than bleeding from other prized portions of my body. Both require focus, determination, practice, carbs, good shoes, and pushing through the tough parts. Sometimes, it's hard to get focus when you are in the part where exhaustion sets in and nothing makes sense, but focus comes into view when you have someone on the side of the route cheering you on simply being there for you. I am thankful she is my focus, but I'm still not running a marathon unless she starts chasing me. The Shed is a cultural center located in New York City’s Hudson Yards, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with the Rockwell Group. It is built to be flexible, innovative, and adaptable. The distinct feature of The Shed is its outer shell, which is movable and extends over the adjacent plaza to create The McCourt. This temporary space is used for large-scale performances, installations, and events.
