Apart from discussion on projects designed by the office, Guest presenters are occasionally invited to share their ideas with the firm. It’s an attempt to share learning and bridge gaps between thought & action, Intention & expression. This evening , our guest speaker was Elie Gamburg ( AIA LEED AP) who is one of the Principals at KPF. KPF is one of the worlds leading Architectural design firms, and as a practice, focused on the design of buildings of all types and scales, in all geographic regions. Elie has more than two decades of experience creating innovative designs for cities, institutions, companies, and developers. In his online presentation, Elie took us on a whistle stop tour showing visuals & drawings of projects across a wide range of project types around the world. All projects were consistently sensitive to human scale, urban context, and sustainable practices. Inaugurado em 2006, o Parque Radical de São Romão, na cidade de Leiria, Portugal, destina-se a treinos de skate, patins e bicicross, mas a falta de manutenção do parque fez com que o número de frequentadores diminuísse com o tempo, mesmo para aqueles que residiam perto do local. Buscando estimular a prática de esportes sobre rodas, o estúdio Architectura Viva propôs a revitalização do espaço a partir de um projeto que anulou áreas de risco ou colisões, garantindo mais segurança para esportistas e pedestres de todas as idades, além de incluir relevos que permitem aumentar ou diminuir a velocidade sobre rodas mais facilmente. Como resultado, o espaço tornou-se receptivo para diversos públicos, proporcionando um espaço seguro e agradável para o encontro da comunidade ao redor. O Parque de São Romão é um excelente exemplo de que, ao projetar cidades, é essencial pensar nos diferentes públicos que ali se encontrarão – sem deixar de lado aspectos técnicos como a segurança e a facilidade de manutenção no futuro. We are Heidi Steeno and James Steeno husband and wife artists & art events duo and owners of James Steeno Gallery. Living on Milwaukee’s west side (Washington Heights Neighborhood), Hoyt Park in Wawuwatosa has been a part of our lives as an urban escape, creative terrain and tract for engaging in physical exercise for over twenty years. Since 2020, with the disruption of the pandemic, we had the unique opportunity to relocate an indoor arts event outdoors along the pathways of @landingathoyt transforming them into a creative hike of local art known as the TOSA Locally Made Pop-Up. We are thankful for our collaboration with Friends of Hoyt Park Pool, all the creative individuals, local businesses, artists and makers, and shoppers willing to meet head on all aspects of Wisconsin weather to participate in these arts events, proving the old saying, “there is no such thing as bad weather, only good clothing.” We like to imagine the creators of the greenspaces in Milwaukee County envisioned these outdoor venues to be enjoyed and utilized by future generations to renew their minds, bodies and spirits. We are overjoyed to engage with the community through the TOSA Locally Made Pop-Ups believing it enlivens our neighborhoods and parkways through active placemaking and participation with a handful of creative expression. With this purpose in mind, the Seoul Is Museum project, has launched numerous projects since 2016, with the Harmony & Connectivity project, which was launched in 2019, is considered a representative example that best embodies the project's purpose. The project redeveloped a space that had been abandoned for half a century and remodelled it into a neighbourhood that showcases public art, which gives new life to the abandoned places through public art. As the spring weather warms New York City, people flock to every available bit of outdoor space. Over the last week, I have seen a mix of picnic blankets pressed together in Washington Square Park, gardeners tending plots at Laguardia Community Garden, and people enjoying lunch at the café tables in Madison Square Park. I have attempted the Cumbia on @34th_ave Open Street, watched skateboarders test their limits on Lafayette Street, which is closed daily to cars, and walked the length of Broadway, where pedestrian plazas now dominate entire blocks. As people crowd the city’s open spaces to be together, William Whyte’s words come to mind, "What attracts people most, it would appear, is other people." Whyte studied human behavior in cities. In 1969, while working with the New York City Planning Commission, he began the Street Life Project, observing how newly planned city spaces, such as Seagram Plaza, were being used. This work resulted in the humorous and insightful film and book, “The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces.” Whyte’s work has been a touchstone for many people working to advance public life in cities, including my friend John Bela, one of the creators of Park(ing) Day. On a recent visit from California, we got a chance to explore the city together. It was striking to see that what started as an experiment to reclaim one San Francisco parking spot in 2005 had grown into a sea of “parklets” on Mulberry Street and everywhere else! From parklets to open streets, these spaces that carve against the flow of traffic are weaving new lines of attention and connection—“attracting” people to one another and making our cities vibrant. They are helping us think of our roadways as parks (not just parklets) fit for the swell of humanity as we break out into the open. The public life they encourage is worthy of another study of the “Social Life of Small Urban Spaces” as we grow to understand the potential of streets as public spaces for people and not cars. #placemaking #OpenStreets #34aveopenstreets

💃 🕺 The Hennepin is turning up the volume for #ThrowbackThursday!💃 🕺 These newspaper clippings take us all the way back to the earliest days of The 900 Hennepin Building, which opened in 1921. Tenants included Barry’s Telegraph and Business College, the Western Auto Supply Company, a barber shop and the Knickerbocker Dancing School! In the 1930’s, the Knickerbocker Dancing School opened at 900 Hennepin. Notable students included #TheAndrewsSisters, the swinging American singing group who brought us the beloved "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B." As a follow-up to our perspective a few weeks ago on the New York Times article, “An Architect Who Builds Community Wins the Pritzker Prize”, we've been inspired yet again by the recent Bloomberg piece, "Dallas Is Looking for Design That Can Tackle Loneliness." One of our group strategy directors, Hugo Lamb, gives his perspective. How can it be possible that in a city, in a place of infinite possibility, where millions of interactions take place every second, we can be lonely? Cities by their very nature are the ultimate engineering of the social environment. They are monuments to our inherent drive to connect, to be together, to be everything but lonely.Yet loneliness is a growing problem in every city around the world. Recent research from the University of Sydney has placed some responsibility on the design of cities. But, in my view, it is the speed of cities that is the problem.Cities move at the speed of culture, the speed of industry, the speed of the modern world. They have been rapidly accelerating in the information age, and the moment we look up from our phones we feel left behind.The urban interventions that are profiled in this thought-provoking piece by Bloomber’s CityLab each have their merits, but perhaps don’t acknowledge the bigger issue: we aren’t placing the same value on the slow spaces within cities as we do the fast spaces. Slow spaces are where we learn to be social. They are intrinsic to our wellbeing, and the wellbeing of our community. To design them well, we need to think holistically and in detail.
