We’re back and revving up for 2024! West Darling Arts is back in the office after our summer break and a day of huge storms yesterday. We hope our creatives are feeling energised and refreshed and are thinking about new projects for the new year. The Country Art Support Project Grants are now open until 5 Feb. CASP is an essential financial support for our regional artists and creators. It puts over $17,000 back into community arts production annually. CASP grants support a range of arts and cultural activities across any arts genre, including visual arts, crafts, theatre, music and film. Examples of projects that may be funded include, but are not limited to: + Development of new works + Workshops (funds should primarily support artist/tutor fees and/or materials) + Performances + Exhibitions + Artists-in-Residence projects + Community arts projects + Core equipment purchases, eg: An individual professional musician/artist looking to upgrade an instrument or technical equipment; An organisation/group looking to upgrade or purchase equipment such as a kiln or printing press. 🌟RUN SPOTLIGHT | #Tilpa to #Wilcannia Drive through the open plains from Tilpa to Wilcannia. Stay a while and meet some of the locals at the the Tilpa Hotel, Established in 1894. The Tilpa Hotel is considered one of the last remaining true bush pubs in Australia. Grown from a river boat trade along the Darling River, the hotel/pub is the heart of Tilpa and an favourite attraction to both travellers and locals. Some of the most scenic driving along the Darling River is on the east road between Tilpa and Wilcannia. The Coach and Horses Campground is part of the Paroo-Darling National Park and the entrance is approximately 120km west of Tilpa. The campsite is a perfect spot to kayak & fish. There are sheltered picnic tables, non flush toilets and gas BBQ's available for use. Wilcannia was once one of Australia’s busiest inland ports. You’ll find the Wilcannia of today a much quieter place, but its historic architecture is well worth a look. 4th Time Lucky 🙌 Day 32, Tibooburra to Wilga Station (Paroo Darling NP) Never ones to take the easy road home we quickly bypassed last years covid culprit at Milparinka and turned east at the Tool Tree, and past the #thinktank again on our way to White Cliffs and the Paroo Darling National Park. Plenty of emus, had to keep your eyes peeled. A brief stop at the Tilpa Pub where the water was well down on 2022. It had peaked near to the road level of the bridge in late 2022 leaving the town cut off for months. Louth offers the opportunity to quench your thirst and meet some of the locals with a visit to the local pub at Shindy’s Inn. Enjoy the experience of outback life with a station stay at either Trilby Station or Kallara Station, both members of the Outback Beds network. Take a walk back in history at Dunlop Station, once a million acres and the first shed in the world to complete a mechanical shearing in 1888. Dunlop Station has tours every day except Monday. "If you know Bourke, you know Australia!" Henry Lawson once said and it kept echoing around my head! I guess he adored the Outback like me and if you open your ears and eyes, there's just so much to see! So, it seemed the fun had begun as we headed down The Darling River Run! Prey birds circle in the sky, emu's were struttin' and the Darling River is runnin'! We decided to "wing" where to camp and we kind of fell into an Outback trance. Very few cars and dirt roads for miles, we didn't see a traffic light for days, just a dusty, blue sky haze. Snakes and lizards are out in force so pretty happy I was in a Ram and not on a horse. 🤣 I reckon it beats life back in the day when life was rarely about "play". So, we followed the "Darling River Run" under the Aussie golden sun. Bourke to Louth to Tilpa and we wandered through Wilcannia. We just took our time and there was so much to spy. Every spot was worth a stop, some I've been to before and others we will go back and explore a little more. I'll put some details with the pics, it was honestly, just Vantastic! Day 13 Tilpa to Trilby Station It was a dusty drive today but we only had to travel about an hour down the road to our next destination. 📍Trilby Station - Definitely feeling the happy vibes at this location. We chose a powered site for our stay here but the unpowered sites along the billabong and river are large and have fireplaces with some firewood ready to get your fire started. Some also have tables, chairs, gazebos and drop toilets are not too far away. 📍Tilpa Weir Campground, Tilpa, NSW This is a beauty and it's FREE! We arrived early in the day so we were able to pick our spot. When you enter you can either turn left or right to find a spot. We made a left and found a great spot that had easy access to the riverbank. This is a self contained camp spot which suited us perfectly! This is where we wanted to test our newly purchase yabby nets, pull up some chairs and just sit back for a couple of nights and relax. What we noticed straight away was the amount of carp in the river at this time. The river was quite low in parts and all we could see were carp swimming to the top and at times jumping around. This was a sign that we would not bother putting our rods in, but we did use our yabby traps! It was so peaceful and sheltered with plenty of fire wood to collect. The birdlife was amazing and the sunsets were some of the best we had seen on our trip! Create NSW Consultations 29 August Broken Hill at Noon The Far West is running hot on the back of our arts and cultural events. We all witnessed the great momentum being built up from a number of festivals including the Mutawintji Cultural Festival, Mundi Mundi Bash and the Broken Heel Festival. Let's leverage this momentum to advocate for the arts in our region. The NSW State Government is in the process of developing a new Arts and Creative Industries Policy. The CEO of Regional Arts NSW, Dr Tracey Callinan has written a response advocating for our regional voices to be heard, emphasising the value that cultural and creative industries have in building social capital in our regional places. She hopes issues of access and equity are central to the process that develops this new policy. It would be great to see creatives from the Far West contribute to towards developing the state’s first dedicated Arts, Culture and Creative Industries Policy from Create NSW. More pics of the @tilpahotel ! I poked fun at Tilpa the other day for having Australia’s shortest Heritage Trail, but honestly the pub is an absolute heritage gem in itself! Originally called the Royal Hotel, it was built in 1894 and sits on the Darling River, south-east of Bourke. We turned up on Sunday afternoon and there was a big crowd, with locals and travellers on their way home from Louth Races or on their way to the Mundi Mundi Bash. We had a fantastic time, listened to some great live music and made plenty of new friends! There’s nothing like the vibe of a country pub! If you want to become part of the pub’s history, you can even write your name on the walls for a gold coin donation to the RFDS! Originally called the Royal Hotel, it was built in 1894 and sits on the Darling River, south-east of Bourke. We turned up on Sunday afternoon and there was a big crowd, with locals and travellers on their way home from Louth Races or on their way to the Mundi Mundi Bash. We had a fantastic time, listened to some great live music and made plenty of new friends! There’s nothing like the vibe of a country pub! If you want to become part of the pub’s history, you can even write your name on the walls for a gold coin donation to the RFDS!
