Some Aussie remoteness for you, but with a timewarp - I just love this pristine old sandstone post office building in remote Wilcannia, NSW … enough to have returned twice since my first stop here as a 16 year old on school safari. Here’s my fiancé & me in 1984, and my husband & me in our 40th year of marriage in 2024! Wilcannia is a pass-thru town with a few problems, but with some nurturing it will survive. From the smallest creeks which can often seem to flow upstream when their nearest river floods, to the grandeur of the long winding rivers which glide slowly past ancient trees and parched higher ground, we are surrounded by and often arrested by the process of water making its way to destination. Whether it be dramatic and awe inspiring or a more subtle manoeuvre water invariably has its way. As it falls, gathers, retreats and flows the landscape on every part of the earth is formed and informed by its waterways. Here are but a few that I’ve come to love. In my travels along the lakes of Yarrawonga in Victoria, the Darling River that flows through the entire state of New South Wales, the Murrumbidgee with its sweet strength and the mysterious Lake George I find myself like a trainspotter or a bird watcher following the nuances and beauty of each mercurial glimmer.”
A Quandong Pie at the Copley Bakery was a daily treat while I stressed about my car… Monday morning when I headed to the mechanics, I was met with the ‘best case scenario’, which is that it was driveable!!! I took it for a test drive north to Lyndhurst and back and was then good to go if I so chose! Took me until 2.30pm to pack up camp, farewell new friends and stock up on Quandong Pies for the grandies… Orooroo that night, Wilcannia the next, then Warren and last night an absolutely exquisite camp by Yarrie Lake, just west of Narrabri. I can't make the official opening next week, so it was a pleasure to tour Maari Ma Health's new Wilcannia Health and Wellbeing Centre this week. 🏡 Built on the banks of the Darling River, a river theme runs throughout the facility, making it a welcoming place for the community to access GP services, chronic disease management, child and family health, as well as a range of visiting specialist services. 🩺🧑⚕️ 💰 The former Federal Coalition Government provided funding for the construction of this new purpose-built facility which will serve the health needs of the #Wilcannia community for years to come. 👍

It was incredibly fascinating to visit the Klondyke Range Complex - located about 130km north of #Wilcannia - this week to take a look at the military-grade testing facility. 📍 Situated on Klondyke Station, on approximately one million acres of uninhabited land, there's no other testing range in Australia like it. 🇦🇺 The @klondykerange complex can accommodate a diverse range of testing and live firing capability, from small arms to 120mm cannons, enabling Australian and international defence and law enforcement organisations to test and evaluate their systems, equipment, vehicles, weaponry and other ordnance. 🪖 It's so important to do this type of testing for our military capability so this facility is of enormous value to the Australian Defence Force, and is also gaining interest from the UK, USA, Europe and Asia. The fact that it is located in the Parkes electorate not only provides economic benefits to the region but shows just how diverse and capable this part of the country really is. 💪

We’re back and revving up for 2024! West Darling Arts is back in the office after our summer break and a day of huge storms yesterday. We hope our creatives are feeling energised and refreshed and are thinking about new projects for the new year. The Country Art Support Project Grants are now open until 5 Feb. CASP is an essential financial support for our regional artists and creators. It puts over $17,000 back into community arts production annually. CASP grants support a range of arts and cultural activities across any arts genre, including visual arts, crafts, theatre, music and film. Examples of projects that may be funded include, but are not limited to: + Development of new works + Workshops (funds should primarily support artist/tutor fees and/or materials) + Performances + Exhibitions + Artists-in-Residence projects + Community arts projects + Core equipment purchases, eg: An individual professional musician/artist looking to upgrade an instrument or technical equipment; An organisation/group looking to upgrade or purchase equipment such as a kiln or printing press. Last evening, a southerly buster brought a gusty cool change to coastal parts - namely the Illawarra, Sydney and Hunter regions, which will last for a few days before heat picks up again mid-week. 🌟RUN SPOTLIGHT | #Wilcannia to #Menindee The Wilcannia-Menindee section of The #DarlingRiverRun has a western and eastern route. The western route travels to the north west of Lake Pamamaroo while the east route passes to the south of Lake Tandure and crosses the Darling River into Menindee at the southern end of the township. 🌟RUN SPOTLIGHT | #Tilpa to #Wilcannia Drive through the open plains from Tilpa to Wilcannia. Stay a while and meet some of the locals at the the Tilpa Hotel, Established in 1894. The Tilpa Hotel is considered one of the last remaining true bush pubs in Australia. Grown from a river boat trade along the Darling River, the hotel/pub is the heart of Tilpa and an favourite attraction to both travellers and locals. Some of the most scenic driving along the Darling River is on the east road between Tilpa and Wilcannia. The Coach and Horses Campground is part of the Paroo-Darling National Park and the entrance is approximately 120km west of Tilpa. The campsite is a perfect spot to kayak & fish. There are sheltered picnic tables, non flush toilets and gas BBQ's available for use. Wilcannia was once one of Australia’s busiest inland ports. You’ll find the Wilcannia of today a much quieter place, but its historic architecture is well worth a look. The Darling river, the heartbeat of the town, was once how wheat and wool were transported out, now in places very little water flows 🥲. The courthouse est 1880.
