At a restaurant last night we were shocked to discover a new toxic trend in the American tourism. Whoever has started this or is doing this is an arrogant and ignorant troll. Waiting staff deserve to be tipped in all parts of the world, it is a common courtesy to show appreciation to their efforts to make your visit pleasant and they do it with a smile under stressful conditions. For context - An American couple in the table beside us were treated like royalty all evening, as were all the clients, however they were self absorbed and the busy waiters had to smile when they stalled by these Americans who forced their stories on them during the service, after their meal they were offered free coffee and limoncello which they guzzled down and talked nonstop nonsense about “authentic limoncello “ as if they knew 🤨 Then they left without leaving a tip! The staff were clearly disappointed that their efforts were ignored and talked about the problem of giving a stellar service to people who don't appreciate it. It is disheartening and seems like a waste of time. This toxic trend from America is another that is going to ruin our beautiful dining culture. Tipping the waiting staff has always been in Italy and in Europe. It is just rude not to. I’ve heard lately some disparaging remarks here and there about cocktail waitresses (it is a political season, after all), so I’m sharing a few blurry images from my days as a cocktail waitress. I’m proud of that work, it was damn hard and I put myself through college because of it. I typically worked from 8pm until 4am, although sometimes I also bartended happy hour first, mixing up Rusty Nails for grumpy old men. My first cocktail job was when I was 18 and I basically had to dress like a Playboy bunny without the ears and the cottontail. I wore high heels and could navigate across a crowded dance floor with a tray full of drinks held high above my head without spilling a drop - I got good tips for that little trick. The first photo is from a few years later at the last job I had as a cocktail waitress, just before I moved to DC; there was an Air Force base nearby and the second photo is from when a customer who was being deployed overseas the next day asked if I would take a photo with him. The third photo is at the same bar on my night off with one of my coworkers. I’m super proud of the work I did during those years - I learned a lot of skills, made good money, and met a lot of people with big dreams.
