*This post discusses open-heart surgery and contains post-surgery images. Oscar's story, by mum, Lia: I found out I was pregnant when I was 17. During my pregnancy, there were no concerns until my 20-week scan. The sonographers spent a long time focusing on the heart before leaving to get another doctor who told us there was something wrong with our baby's heart. We then got referred to a larger hospital where we had another scan, which revealed that our little boy had tetralogy of Fallot. The doctors there warned us of all the possible risks that our little boy may face, such as struggling to walk and talk. The doctors also offered a termination, which I refused. I got induced early to monitor how my little boy coped. Oscar was born at 39 weeks and was very blue in appearance. I was allowed a quick cuddle before he got rushed to the NICU. He was one of the larger babies in there, and fortunately, we could go home after two weeks. At six months old, Oscar had his open heart surgery. The surgery took seven hours, and his recovery over the next two weeks was awful. However, Oscar recovered so quickly and surprised everyone. Oscar now has yearly checks and will require more surgery once he is a little older. Currently, he is a happy, energetic seven year old, and he is doing great! I am so glad the sonographers found his heart condition antenatally. A year ago today, it was a Friday night, around 630pm, I received the call telling me that the amniocentesis confirmed what I already knew in my heart to be true - the baby I was carrying in my womb had Down Syndrome. It had been 2 days since I got the amnio done and I spent those two days worrying and crying and praying that the 1% inaccuracy of the NIPT testing would be our reality. I wanted so badly for the doctor to tell me that you didn’t have that extra copy of chromosome 21, that it was a mistake in the NIPT results and that you were “normal” (the word is “typical”). But that’s the thing… God doesn’t make mistakes. He knew exactly what He was doing when He knit you together in my womb. I regret every second I ever prayed for you to be different than who God created you to be. I couldn’t imagine who you’d be without that extra chromosome. I couldn’t imagine my days without the indescribable warmth and light that emanates from your little soul. Your eyes are like windows to the purest form of love and I couldn’t imagine how differently it would feel to look at you if you weren’t exactly who you are. Here we are, a year later, and you’re kicking butt in recovery from your second open heart surgery, you’re meeting all of your milestones, and you bring nothing but joy to everyone around you. The last year has been HARD, but you are SO worth it.
