After a lengthy border crossing, chasing passport stamps, visas, driving permit, insurance, being scanned and sniffed by drug dogs and annoyed by a fixer who caused more trouble than he saved. The day grew longer still in search of sim cards and a working ATM in Nouâdhibou (9th time lucky). We arrive at a seaside campsite on the outskirts of the city and all is well. There's a place around Atar center where the donkeys have their parking spot. After long day of hard work they can rest here... In some piles of rubbish but at least with lots of space to themselves and no weight to carry for few hours. From my observations during my travels to Africa and the Middle East these animals have truly hard life. Serving as low speed taxi, as replacement for much more expensive vehicle, often malnourished and overlooked... But it's somehow difficult to judge their owners - we're used to prioritizing human life over anything else. While the Sahara's attractive blue and loose attire is becoming a relic from the past, in Mauritania, the fashion tradition is still alive and looks like it's here to stay. While visiting Mauritania, we met these two young boys wearing their traditional dress boubou and turban. The Saharan Daraa or boubou, a long and loose gown, and tagelmusts, a cloth veil that is used as a turban, are two key clothing staples for the nomad men of the desert as well as for the Mauritanian men. The Kafta, worn here, is known for its loose, flowing design, perfect for the desert climate. It's often decorated with intricate embroidery, reflecting the artistry of the Mauritanian people. As for the turban, it's not just a fashion statement; it serves a practical purpose, protecting against the harsh Sahara sun and sandstorms. 🇬🇧/🇪🇦 Train travel is always a delight for any traveler, but a trip on the most famous train in Mauritania is an indescribable experience. Your seat will be a pile of iron ore (very soft, to be honest), the window will be a 360 degree view of the desert landscape, and the bathroom... I'll leave that to your imagination. The lack of comfort on board is replaced by a spectacular view of one of the most inhospitable corners of the Sahara desert. On this journey, wind, sun and dust will be our companions for 18 hours until we reach the port city of Nouadhibou. In Mauritania I found something that I had not experienced in my travels for a long time. It is an authentic country to the core. The landscapes, the experiences and its people reminded me that there is still much to discover in this world. Science declared the „Sahara Crocodile“ that used to live everywhere in the area around 7000 years ago (when the region was still wet and fertile) as „probably extinct“. False alarm! If the scientists had only talked to the locals instead of looking into books and counting their own records… The crocodiles were never extinct, they just live in peace in artesian springs in rocky terrain where they moved to when the climate change that began 6000 years ago caused the area turning into a desert. In 1999, scientists started an „expedition“ (again: we would have just asked around locals and used google satellite view for potential springs) and „surprisingly“ found the crocodiles and declared the „news“. So now that’s official that the Sahara Crocodiles are not extinct, we went to see them in their natural habitat, laying around in the sun or taking a bath in the pool. We could get really close to them and observe those fascinating creatures out in nature. It was a bit tiring to hike through the rocky terrain in our MX boots, but we declared them as „special crocodile protection gear“ and made it to the hidden place.
