This image was taken at the Khongor Sand Dunes in the Gobi Desert during the Mongolia Photo Workshop. Despite being one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, the Gobi Desert has been home to double-humped Bactrian camels for millennia. Two distinct types of Bactrian camels inhabit this region: wild and domesticated. Presently, only around 800 wild camels remain, classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In contrast, Mongolia hosts over 250,000 domesticated Bactrian camels, mainly concentrated in the Gobi. Since their domestication around 2500 BC, domestic Bactrian camels have played a vital role in the lives of steppe nomads. They serve as transportation, capable of carrying loads ranging from 170kg to 250kg (375lbs to 550lbs) and covering distances of up to 47km (30 miles) per day. Remarkably, they can maintain this pace for up to 30 consecutive days without needing water. Beyond their role as pack animals, Bactrian camels contribute in various other ways. Their thick, coarse hair is essential for crafting durable ropes used in traditional Ger camps. Their fine wool is prized for making garments and socks, with a single adult male camel producing up to 18kg of wool annually. The sand dunes that everyone associates with the Sahara actually only make up a small portion of it, while the rest is rocks of different sizes. They did however live up to every cliché! From the photographic point of view, I absolutely loved the play with curves, light and shadow. 🇫🇷Deadvlei, « le marais mort » dans le désert du Namib, plus vieux désert du monde. Il y a plusieurs centaines d’années, une inondation a permis à des acacias du désert de pousser là au milieu du désert. Bientôt des dunes (parmis les plus haute du monde) ont encerclé le marais, le coupant ainsi de la plus précieuse des ressources: l’eau. Les arbres sont morts, le marais s’est asséché, laissant place à ce spectacle envoutant où les silhouettes des acacias pétrifiés viennent dessinés sur le sol des ombres aux formes énigmatiques. Celles-ci s’allongent avec la course du soleil, tout comme le temps qui ne semble plus avoir de prise sur ce lieux fantomatique. En fin de journée, ne tardez pas trop, où vous risquez d’être « changé en statue » à votre tour ou bien est-ce l’amende qui vous guette si vous quittez le site, dont la porte d’accès se trouve à 1 heure de route environ, après le couché du soleil, j’avoue que je ne sais plus trop… 🇬🇧Deadvlei in the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world. Several hundred years ago, a flood allowed desert acacia trees to grow there in the middle of the desert. Soon dunes (among the highest in the world) surrounded the marsh, thus cutting it off from the most precious resource: water. The trees are dead, the marsh has dried up, giving way to this captivating spectacle where the silhouettes of petrified acacias come drawn on the ground in shadows with enigmatic shapes. These lengthen with the course of the sun, just like time which no longer seems to have a hold on this ghostly place. You don't have to be on the mesa to see colorful CA native blooms. The sandier coastal strand/sand dune area has vibrant beach evening primrose (Camissoniopsis cheiranthifolia) and pink or purple sand verbena (Abronia umbellata)! Both grow prostrate to the ground and are important plants for stabilizing the sand. The evening primrose grows from a central crown outward with fuzzy gray-green leaves with yellow four-petal flowers that open in the morning. The pink sand verbena has more succulent like leaves and the flowers can range in color from pink to lilac-purple with white centers. Bolsa Chica also has red sand verbena (Abronia maritima) but it is less common.
