No chaces to see people along the road and that made me feel I was in desert. However air gradually got warmer and snow started to disappear. New video up on YouTube. I’d read that the route from Palmwag to Sesfontein was rough, so rough that sometimes the roads need building and the rivers were often impassable. Our car is our home, and we aren’t big into taking risks. It was a dry year, so the threat of water was low. The advice from the ranger at the gate was: “with that car - you’ll be fine.” So we decided we’d just do it. This has been one of the biggest highlights of our trip. It was remote - we saw 3 cars in 3 days. It was rocky - but not so rough we needed to build roads, but rough enough we went into tyre preservation mode (unsuccessfully - the tyres were pretty beaten by the end). It was slow going - 10-20km/hr allowed us to enjoy the peace The landscape was stark - extraordinary colours, vast, flat in parts and stunning hills in others. The wind was strong - not unlike most of Namibia, but so bad we climbed into the tent on one afternoon for a quick nap to escape it. Think of getting over sand grit in your eyes. The animals sparse - it was so very dry but rewarding when you did see them. The bull dust was deep - but Paul had fun playing in it. Our final morning we enjoyed an elongated breakfast with the giraffes on the Hoanib River. The drive out along the river bed was filled with adventure, following your nose through the web of tracks was fun, until of course we reached the RD3707 - the worst of the Namibian corrugations so far. The lesson I learnt - folk on 4x4 forums like to make things sound super challenging - I assume to make it seem like they are being super adventurous. It’s often hard to tell when it will be off the Richter scale difficult, versus when you need a 4x4 but with care and a bit of sensible driving you will get there without mishap. But in the end you just have to take a risk and sometimes it pays off to get an extraordinary experience. This was one of those. 🌰SDW Day 4 (02/04/24) - Half way there already! After a rubbish nights sleep with strong winds and rain.. I had to carry on. I've started, I have to finish 💪. Lovely morning to wake up to on a farm with sheep and lambs. Absolute fabulous views along this route. I'd come across 3 guys that morning who I saw on the trail the day before, we got to discuss the trail so far, weight of their packs, where they been camping etc and also met an older gentlemen who was walking his first trail carrying all gear and camping too. I would soon catch up with all these guys along the way. It was nice to meet others out this time of year doing the full trail camping! My original plan to wild camp started to get a little worrying as the map doesn't show you that it's full of barbed wired farmland along the trail!! 🌰SDW Day 3 (01/04/24) - The second photo was actually what I'd woken up to that morning, mist! It soon burnt off once wondering through Queen Elizabeth forest. Then, just as I hit a lovely view point on Harting Downs the heavens opened. I hardly had food, so just sat down on a tree stump like a boss in the rain eating a cereal bar wishing I'd put my over trousers on after all. Didn't take too long for it to eventually settle and blue skies once more. This was a long walk as I had no food for lunch. Getting everything ready for the Great Lakeland 3 day race next weeknd 😳 I honestly don’t know what I’m letting myself in for. Even got myself a #geekyhiker chest pack (thanks @fuelledbypies for the recommendation!), it’s a fab piece of kit for my map, treats and poles (which I still don’t know how to use) The prospect of wild camping on a sleeping mat, no showers or a comfy bed, never mind no access to hair straighteners…is somewhat out weighed by 3 days of running in the mountains with lovely folk. And this one definitely deserves a mention. This is the smallest of Alfred Wainwright's 214 mountains. A short stunning walk that took less than an hour.
