#TulsaBotanicGarden | The @tulsabotanic unveiled their latest addition with a topping-out ceremony for the Jim and Cherry Bost Arboretum pergola. The pergola, crafted entirely from metal, stands at over 12 feet tall and weighs approximately 15,000 lbs. The pergola houses nine distinct roof panels, each featuring its own unique leaf type. These panels are designed to create various shadows, highlighting the beauty of nature in a creative and enchanting way. Wallace Design Collective provided landscape architecture and structural support in the design of pergola footings. Shout-out to @Jonesplan and Midwestern Manufacturing. The new Arboretum will encompass approximately one and a half acres featuring a mix of over 100 trees as well as shrubs, pathways, an entry donor plaza and meandering walkways leading to a pavilion overlooking the Garden. The trees, shrubs and plants have all been carefully curated to provide native year-round color and vibrancy to the Garden. The winter garden doesn't have to be dreary and dull. In fact, with proper plant selection, the winter garden can look just as good as the rest of the year. Muhlenbergia capillaris 'White Cloud' (muhly grass) and Eryngium yuccifolium (rattlesnake master) is one of my favorite plant combinations, with the Eryngium blooming through the summer and then holding its structure through the fall and winter while the muhly grass shows off. A smaller, but equally beautiful winter plant that I just noticed this year is Kalimeris mongolica 'Hortensis' (second photo, bottom left). I've always admired this plant for its long bloom season from May-frost. But this year, I noticed how well it holds its structure through the winter, even though it's fairly short in stature. It really stands out against a dark evergreen background like Phlox subulata. Last week I completed a design for the shrub layer at the new Bost Arboretum at @tulsabotanic Garden. I'm thrilled with how it turned out and excited for the rest of @tulsa_oklahoma to meander through it. The shrub layer will be a phenomenal showcase of winter color, including species like Ilex verticillata (winterberry holly), Viburnum setigerum (tea viburnum), Viburnum dilatatum (linden viburnum), Cornus sericea (twig dogwoods), and many more. The summer will have also have an abundance of color with Viburnum macrocephalum (Chinese snowball viburnum), spirea, rosemary willow, and several new additions to the panicle hydrangea collection. This photo is just a small sample of the overall design, which is over 2 acres. The new arboretum should open around Fall 2024, so stay tuned and plan your trip here to get some ideas for your own yard. Thank you to the Tulsa Botanic Garden for having us out for a fun night at the Botanic Garden of Lights event. We had such a great time! This year’s Christmas lights displays are bigger and better than ever. Each part of the garden offers a unique atmosphere. The Children's Discovery Garden is full of purples, blues, and greens. The classic Floral Terraces are lined with lights and orbs that glow to the music. In addition to the colorful fountains in the Lotus Pool, the path around it is full of colorful toadstools and water lilies. ❄️Make s'mores at the firepits, sip on some hot drinks, and the kids can have a snowball fight in the haybales. There are also family crafts on Thursdays and live jazz music on Sundays. 🎅Santa will be at the garden every night until December 23. ☃️Special friends will be at the garden after Christmas from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Dec. 26: Meet the Grinch and make a holiday keepsake.
