It's Anthony time - Salvia 'Anthony Parker', still I think one of the best salvias. Late flowering, beginning here in autumn, but big shrubby form and fantastic rich blue purple flowers, so lovely in contrast with the grasses as they turn to gold and copper. This is a plant I've shared so often with friends, easily propagated by taking rooting branches when dormant in late winter, early spring. A cracker!

Yes, it's really happening, Autumn. I can't ignore it. The clocks went forward last night so daylight saving is over. It will now be lighter in the morning and that's a joy. The weather has been beautiful and the strawberries are still producing fruit. The roses are blooming on and only the hostas are fading away. The dahlias don't look like they are quitting. It's all beautiful. The ground has a crunch from the dead leaves when walked apon and the leaves are in fall all the time during the day. But the potager still keeps producing more food. Spinach is lush, as are lettuces and tomatoes. There were two long cucumbers today as well as apple cucumbers and the last two summer squash. #autumninthegarden #fallingleaves #potagers

Autumn. The sedum is so happy. I had sedum in large pots in my suburban home for a few years while I waited until I thought I could manage a large border in the country garden. Over the last 18 months the plants have been taken out of the pots and distributed in either the white border or the colour border. They are growing and expanding with their new found root freedom. With Autumn’s arrival also comes the pleasure of ripe dragonfruit. Apart from them you can now harvest apples, guavas, cape gooseberries, raspberries and early mandarins in our climate zone 5. I grow both dragonfruit varieties, the white and red one, but so far, only the older white plant gives me fruit. The red one flowered for its first time this Summer, but young fruit turned yellow and dropped, although both plants grow right next to each other under the same conditions. 🤔 I hope the young red plant is simply not mature enough to support fruit yet? Any other suggestions? Although dragonfruit looks much better than it tastes, just blander than you would expect but still tasty, it makes for a refreshing, rehydrating low sugar snack that I don’t want to miss. And they look so beautiful. As most fruit and vegetables, the flesh of any dragonfruit is rich in fibre which aids digestion and the little black jelly- coated seeds have a similar effect to soaked linseed and can prevent constipation if eaten regularly. However, a red fleshed dragon fruit would certainly be my preferred choice as it is not just prettier, but healthier again with a higher antioxidant content due to its rich colour. This years my fruit trees have made a jump and production has reached a new level. We harvest the first crop of homegrown mangoes, 12 decent sized fruit and now the first good crop of oranges and an abundance of first papayas are in production and the plant is going berserk putting out still more flowers. I am amazed at the sudden glut of fruit. It is as if the trees try to make up for the missing harvests of previous years. The apples are loaded to the max also and branches are simply covered in them and bending down. I know, I should have taken some fruit off, as they turned out only small now. But what is worse, this year the fruit fly seems to have gotten hold of them. The fruit is in poor condition. 😢Or is it something else ? Limes and oranges are equally loaded. I heard limes can be difficult to grow, but I never had a problem with them 👏.
