Men det är inte grovskissen som går fort, det är renritandet som tar minst tid. GARDEN LIGHTING You’ve just had your garden designed and landscaped, with a brief to include a dining and entertaining area for those long summer nights. Night falls for your inaugural garden party and… nobody can see a thing! There are two schools of thought when it comes to garden lighting; the first is to do it once and do it properly, with high quality but low voltage mains lights that should be installed by a qualified electrician/lighting designer during the garden build. The other is to use solar. Solar lights have come along in leaps and bounds with lithium battery development, often being as bright as mains lights and lasting well into the small hours of the morning during summer. However, you do have to position solar panels carefully to obscure them into a border, but still ensure they get enough sun! They also often need replacing every 2-3 years. The main things to consider are: - What do you want to illuminate? Consider up lighting trees and shrubs as focal points, and using low lights on the edges of paths and paving to safely light routes - Only light what you need, with the narrowest beams possible, using low voltage / lowest brightness settings to avoid disrupting nighttime wild life - Consider the views from your house. Light up at least one focal point that is visible from room of the house to avoid staring back at your own reflection in the evenings! Soil may not sound like the most interesting of garden topics but every gardener and garden designer knows how important it is. The success or failure of a garden depends on the health of our plants and they can only thrive if they are planted in soil that will support their growth. Interestingly in some areas of our work we have been encountering soil contamination and we are increasingly spending more time on site to assess soil as well as working with architects and specialists on remediation strategies to ascertain the best approach for the site. Sometimes this might mean building up the soil, or taking it down and phytoextraction - the selection of plants and trees to remove contamination over a longer period of time. All of this is essential to achieve a successful garden and is particularly important for clients who want to introduce productive growing and edibles into their gardens. Hello to new followers on here of late 👋 thanks for following along. I just wanted to say a little bit about my background and shout out to all those late career changers out there, maybe feeling a little of the ole imposter syndrome, perhaps you have a new found or long bubbling passion for this industry. Don't feel overwhelmed by all the amazing experience out there, the fabulous insta accounts with a gazillion followers. Be willing to learn, embrace opportunities, tackle the nerves and take the rough with the smooth, and accept that you can't know everything all at once. ALSO know that you will have heaps of transferable skills which especially in garden design are valuable in a sole trading capacity which means you are likely wearing many hats: PR, marketing, sales, finance, customer relations, design. I started in sales in the travel industry at 16, went back to education in my 20s studying English lit and French for 10 years receiving a PhD in 2004 (the last pic in the funny hat). Hard to believe i had the honour of interviewing Bernardine Evaristo for my research. Life took a weird twist, personally/emotionally, I took a temporary post in Publishing, took a CIM in marketing, stayed 10 years, worked with some amazing authors, made lifelong friends and met my husband. Having children and my first ever patch of land prompted my career reset, more time outside, visiting gardens, discovering plants, part time work in plant nurseries and then a course at The Cotswold Gardening School. 🌳🪱 Another beautiful installation in the books! Did we all get sunburnt? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes. We installed a nice mixed hedgerow of native shrubs and trees for our friends Pilar and Peter in Jenktintown over the weekend. We stacked as many applicable and deer resistant shrubs into the mix as possible. Still waiting on our Amsonia hubrichtii and redtwig dogwoods to show up so that we can pop those in. But what we did put in was a sweet bay magnolia, two redbuds, a fringe tree, a dogwood, many fothergilla, inkberry, dwarf American holly, sweetspire, summer sweet, Chokeberry ground hug, buckeye bottlebrush, as well as a mix of flowering perennials. One main area of focus is the walkway to the front door which is planted with pink muhly grass, swamp milkweed, and butterfly weed on both sides. We also installed a group of shade loving plants below the existing maple to fill in the corner.
