Un an plus tard le jardin s’est métamorphosé. La prairie s’est enrichie, perdant ainsi en diversité végétale mais en améliorant sa capacité à retenir la fraîcheur et en changeant complètement de forme. Les poacées font désormais danser leurs épis, future matrice de notre test de prairie plantée. Une fauche en bande alternée sur la prairie de jachère (photo 1/2/3) a été effectué afin de limiter l’arrivée des ronces, d’alterner les milieux et de diversifier le cortège végétale et donc animal. 300 m linéaire de haie ont été plantés, 20 fruitiers ont été implanté dont une dizaine directement dans les haies, plus d’une centaine de vivaces ont été planté devant la maison, une large réflexion sur la récupération d’eau a été mené, une plantation d’environ 60 graminées est à venir pour structurer la prairie, un potager en bac et un en lasagne sont en cours… bref, l’aventure du jardin de Boulebec a réellement commencé ! Ahora hacen acto de presencia las poáceas, futura matriz de nuestro ensayo de pradera plantada. La pradera en barbecho se segó en franjas alternas (foto) para limitar la llegada de zarzas, alternar los ambientes y diversificar las plantas. Gorgeous townhouse in historic neighborhood in need of a glow up? We got you! Philadelphia’s Spring Garden District dates back to the 1800’s and its tree lined streets (some still with the original brick sidewalk like this one…) feature elegant three-story Victorian brick and brownstones in a variety of architectural styles. This particular property is located on one of the desirable terraced blocks that includes a small, raised garden plot in front of the house. We transformed this dark and unwelcoming front garden into a softly screened sitting area immersed in dappled light and texture. Replacing weed screening and shrubs with an airy native plant palette, our build team also added a bluestone patio to blend with existing stonework within this shared entry way. Custom built-in seating along the home’s facade made use of existing anchors while integrating a planter to frame the living room view; using the same sustainable materials here was key for cohesion in such a small space. Design-built in 2023, this is baby’s first birthday! The bench’s thermally modified hardwood is already silvering beautifully this spring. GARDEN UPDATE ✅ We’ve got 65 of our 96 five-gallon buckets seeded. We seeded the first round of 32 plants on 4/19. We only lost one plant so far (the Broccoli up and disappeared… we’re thinking it was a bird since the soil looked like it was dug into). ✅ We just seeded the second round of some of the plants today (so we have a succession of food coming in waves 🤞). ✅ We’re grateful for the 23 species that have germinated! And, we’re stumped as to why the Carrots, Parsnips, Tomatoes, and Peppers haven’t sprouted yet. (We know they take their time, but c’mon. Does anyone have any tips??) ✅ We’ve noticed every one of the Potato sacks and Onion grow bags are showing signs of success so far. ✅ We’ve planted Zinnias and Marigolds, as well as a variety of herbs in random pots and directly into the ground in the perennial area. ✅ And, pretty much all the perennials and herbs we planted in the ground last fall from our old property seem to be doing well. Go! Go!! Go!!! We keep on working hard and we’re excited to see how this massive experiment turns out. 💡 Garden Tip: Wait! Please don't dig up your perennial hibiscus yet if you don't see new growth. This is one of the very last perennials to emerge in spring and until it does, it's easy to mistake for a plant that didn't make it through the winter. In zone 5, perennial hibiscus often doesn't emerge until late May. That's in drastic contrast to the Deep South where they sometimes start blooming in late May. Once they start growing, they will make up for lost time, growing about an inch per day.
