The 2024 UAW Fellows met for Touchpoint #2 the week before the Education Committee Conference at the Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center in Black Lake, MI. They continued to learn from UAW International Education Department staff and leadership on how to become better facilitators and educators for our union. The 2024 Fellows then assisted our department during the weeklong 2024 UAW Education Committee Conference. They got to see what it is like behind the scenes of a 240-person conference and all the planning, preparation, and work that goes into making it a success for our members. Not only did 2024 bring a full solar eclipse to Black Lake, but we may also dare to say the size of this year's Fellowship eclipses those of previous years with 37 Fellows! During the Education Committee Conference, each and every one of them showed up, helped out, and proved every day why their local and regional leadership chose them to be a part of this year's Fellowship Program! From stuffing delegate bags, welcoming everyone at conference check-in, preparing their classrooms, conducting multiple guided tours, assisting in the classroom facilitation with our staff, leading after class activities for the delegates like trivia night, helping coach and teach our delegates after hours, to assisting them load their bags on the bus back to the airport; our 2024 Fellows were amazing! 😍 We can't wait to see you again at the last two weeks of your training and the UAW Family Scholarship! 👨🎓👩🎓🧑🎓

Across the nation, workers are talking about the historic @uaw.union victories, from last fall with the strike against the Big Three Auto Companies, to most recently at the @volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee just days ago. The vote to unionized passed with over 2,600 workers voting yes to unionization, with roughly a third as many voting against. According to Shawn Fain, UAW president, the 73% yes vote was only possible because of the rank-and-file led approach the union took. Correspondents from @onstrikeshow, @workersstrikeback’s weekly broadcast, were able to get an exclusive interview with Shawn Fain at Labor Notes. When asked what the union victory in Chattanooga could be attributed to, Fain said: “We let the members lead it...that’s one big change we tried to do since I took over, to not be a top-down type of leadership structure... it’s really embracing a member led union” The recent campaigns by UAW, including the one that just won union recognition in Chattanooga, are rooted in worker-to-worker organizing. At Volkswagen, the key demands are quality healthcare, increased safety rules, a real sick pay system and retirement security. Workers have seen a night-and-day shift from the old methods of the UAW leadership. In the failed 2014 campaign to unionize Volkswagen, the UAW forbade organizing committee members to talk to coworkers in the plant. Instead the union had a tent across the street for workers to sign a union card. This an other tactics that were employed just fed into Volkswagen’s union-busting message about the union being some outside force! The victory at Chattanooga represents a massive breakthrough for unions and workers in the South. For over 50 years, bosses defeated almost every effort by workers to organize unions. More than 50 years ago on April 28, Workers Memorial Day, the Occupational Safety and Health Act went into effect, promising every worker the right to a safe job—a fundamental right. The law was won because of the tireless efforts of the labor movement, which organized for safer working conditions and demanded action from the government to protect working people. Since then, unions and allies have fought hard to make that promise a reality—winning protections under the law that have made jobs safer and saved lives. But our work is not done. A seat at the bargaining table can be a matter of life or death in the workplace, ensuring everyone can go home at the end of a work shift, alive and without work-related illnesses that plague many workers. Across the United States, workers are organizing for strong health and safety standards from employers and governments to improve working conditions. Together on this Workers Memorial Day, we elevate safe jobs and raise our collective voice to protect what we have—confronting attacks on regulations that keep our workplaces safe and demanding action to win stronger protections. Arab Americans were part of the significant and dynamic organizing for Metro Detroit, Michigan and the United Auto Workers. Specifically playing major roles in the the Flint Sit Down Strike (1936-37), the Battle of Over Pass and Ford Hunger March (1937), and the UAW Walkout (1973) with demands for Israel divestment, the liberation of Palestine, and improved working conditions on the line. The Arab-Isreali War inspired a newly created 1972 Arab Workers Caucus (AWC) to connect their demands both at home and internationally for common goal of organizing and liberation. They received a good deal of outreach and guidance from activists in the League of Revolutionary Black Workers who stood in Solidarity with the Palestinian cause, seeing Arab Workers as their brothers and sisters across the diaspora. By late October 1973, demands levied by more than 2,500 Arab Workers to dump Israeli bonds had led to a series of walkouts initially led by Yemeni workers at Chrysler’s Dodge Main plant. Each week the walkouts grew in size and target. On November 28, 1973, 5,500+ Detroit auto workers, led by AWC, walked off their jobs at Chrysler’s Dodge Main plant, demanding that the leadership of their union, the United Auto Workers (UAW), divest from Israel. The strike, which was organized by the union’s recently formed AWC, was centered around an event taking place that same day in Detroit: Leonard Woodcock, the president of UAW, was set to receive a humanitarian honor from a Zionist organization, B’nai B’rith International. Walking off brought production to a halt with protests against the UAW’s complicity in the colonization and illegal occupation of Palestine, and demanding dignity and respectable work conditions on the line. On the day a jury was finalised for the Trump campaign finance fraud case (aka the “hush money” trial), Max Azzarello fatally set himself on fire outside of the courthouse after throwing leaflets around advancing conspiracy theories. Hopefully his pointless death will be one of only a few as the current presidential election season plays out. Some social media comments pointed out that Azzarello was a Florida resident, and his home state is bottom of the pile for per capita spending on mental health programmes. Others were inclined to cite the poor spending on public education in the state, with Florida given an F for effort in one recent national survey. The woeful state of the US public education system was dramatically demonstrated in season 4 of acclaimed TV series The Wire and things haven’t improved since then. This is a country where some states are quite happy for teachers to carry guns into classrooms, and Georgia’s Lt. Governor wants to pay them $10K extra a year to do so (while many teachers have to fund markers and other schools supplies out of their own pockets!) One of the most high profile election deniers, Keri Lake, has told her supporters in Arizona to “strap on a Glock” because “it’s going to be a crazy run, the next six months.” Lake hopes her hyping up the violent rhetoric will be enough for her to be chosen as Trump’s VP. That Trump is one big criminal reprobate and con artist has been obvious for years. Journalist John Sweeney’s 2013 interview with him concerning mob links is pretty conclusive proof of that. Trump fits in with the sorry American tradition of hucksters hoodwinking the gullible in the general population.
