Took an L on Humphreys Peak (highest peak on AZ) earlier this week. I got a late start and didn't get on trail until about 11AM. I expected some snow on route, but I wasn't expecting the trail to be 99% covered in snow! I started by crossing a ski slope at the AZ snowbowl and struggled to find where the trail started and trudged through knee-deep snow for about 45 minutes before finding hard pack. I got about 2/3 of the way up the mountain and stopped at an overlook for a quick snack. I had 1.5 miles and 1.2k of climbing to go, and the hard packed trail faded, and I found myself trudging through waist deep snow. I continued for less than a quarter mile and decided it was time to call it quits. I later found out that summitting is actually illegal until after May 5th due to how dangerous it can be when the ridgeline is snow-covered (oops). This is only my second no-summit in the last 5 years. It's always a bummer, but sometimes you have to know when to call it quits, especially when you're doing this stuff solo. I didn't see a single orher person this entire climb, and cell service was spotty, so it just wasn't worth the risk with the conditions.
