Author Spotlight - Erik Larson I’ve only recently discovered @erikxlarson books, but he’s quickly become one of my favorite authors. I like the unique style in which he writes many of his books, and the subject matter he tackles. Currently I’ve only read two of his books, with 3 more of his on my TBR list. My favorite of the two is “The Devil in the White City”. I had no idea the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair could be such a fascinating subject for a historical non-fiction book, but that's exactly what Larson does in this book. To me, the “devil’ side of the book is mostly an afterthought, with the Chicago World’s Fair being the best part of the book. I can’t wait to get into some of Larson’s other works, particularly “The Demon of Unrest”. For me, Larson is a must read author. If you’re looking for a great author with a solid roster of books grab yourself a copy of one of his works, you won’t be disappointed. #history #historybuff #historybooks #historybook #americanhistory #europeanhistory #bookrecommendations #bookreview #bookreviews #bookshelf @erikxlarson #booklovers #tbr #tbrlist

During our annual business meeting this past Saturday, the Lake Minnetonka Chapter awarded medals and certificates to three local student winners of the DAR’s annual essay competition. These talented students read their essays to an appreciative audience of DAR members during a special program. Middle school students were invited to imagine themselves as nineteenth-century newspaper reporters for The Philadelphia Times assigned to write an article about the debut of John Philip Sousa’s new march “The Stars and Stripes Forever” on May 14, 1897. The essay competition caught the attention of student musician, Paul Houck, who attends Minnetonka East Middle School and plays both the oboe and the piano. Paul’s essay entitled “Stars and Stripes Forever, A March for All Americans” was as awarded first place in the 6th grade level. He is also a winner at the state level and placed 2nd in the North Central Division. Wayzata Central Middle School student, Aaron Shao, earned first place in the 8th grade level for his “Stars and Stripes Forever” essay. This multitalented student enjoys skiing, playing tennis, talking with friends, studying engineering, and competing in the National Geographic Society’s Geography Bee. High school students were invited to choose a historical figure from the colonial era and discuss that person’s impact on the American Revolution. Minnetonka High School 9th grade student, Lydia Houck, was awarded first place for her essay exploring the life and contributions of James Otis. She is also a state winner and placed 1st in the North Central Division of the contest. “The DAR is proud to honor these exceptional students and recognize their research and writing talents,” says, Teresa Anderson, Lake Minnetonka Chapter DAR American History Chair. “These students are America’s future leaders,” she adds, “and we believe it is important to encourage them to explore the historical figures and events that shaped the values and character of our country.” #americanhistory #daughtersoftheamericanrevolution #America250 #americanrevolution #americanhistoryessay #celebratestarsandstripesforever

On April 29, 1890, Henry Faulkner patented the ventilated shoe thereby helping to provide comfort and healthy feet to the world. Every day people complained of foot problems caused by lack of ventilation inside of shoes. For years people constantly suffered from blisters and sores on their feet as well as excessive sweating and aching caused by walking and standing with shoes on which offered no cooling air to circulate within. Faulkner devised a method for placing holes in specific locations within the shoe, thus allowing for adequate circulation and greater comfort. #blackmenspeakpodcast #africanamericanhistory #americanhistory #blackinventors

Jonathan Edwards was an American philosopher and revivalist. He was a leading figure of the American Enlightenment, and as such is widely regarded as one of America's most important and original philosophers. Edwards believed in the existence of God, and he made it his life's work to show how God's arms are open to anyone who would come to Him. Edwards once quipped, "God's love is an ocean without shores or bottom." By this statement, Edwards shows how the love of God is boundless, and He extends that love to each and every one of us. #edwards #quotes #philosophy #americanhistory #god #godslove #museumofcreatedbeauty

"Medgar was a man who never wanted adoration, who never wanted to be in the limelight. He was a man who saw a job that needed to be done and he answered the call and the fight for freedom, dignity and justice not just for his people but all people." - Myrlie Evers-Williams . . . The home of civil rights activist Medgar Wiley Evers (July 2, 1925 - June 12, 1963). On June 12, 1963, after arriving home, Medgar Evers was getting out of his car when White Supremacist Byron De La Beckwith, who was waiting in the bushes across the street shot and killed Medgar Evers. Byron De La Beckwith was arrested, prosecuted, and tried twice by an all white jury to a hung jury in 1963. In 1994, the murder of Medgar Evers was reopened and Prosecutor Bobby DeLaughter tried the case with new evidence and on February 5, 1994, Byron De La Beckwith was convicted of Medgar Evers murder and sentenced to life in prison. . . . The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home and National Monument is mostly in its original state with slight modifications, including furniture and paint. The goals of the Evers family explained to me by the Parks Service is to show the home of a typical husband and wife of 3 children and to show how Medgar and Myrlie Evers had their home, including their positioning of the beds in the children's rooms to protect them from attack. . . . The neighborhood in itself is full of people who greeted me and will greet you with mutual respect. Most of the families who were neighbors of Medgar and Myrlie Evers still live and own homes in this family oriented community. If you give respect, you'll get a lot of respect out of this community. . . . #medgarevers #myrlieevers #medgarandmyrlieevershome #medgarandmyrlieevershomenationalmonument #jacksonms #Mississippi #jackson  #jacksonmississippi #nationalhistoriclandmark #601 #picoftheday #picoftheweek #instagood #instalike #blackhistory #civilrights #history #americanhistory #civilrightsmovement #nationalparkservice #thisisamerica #foundationalblackamerican #foundationalblackamericanhistory #june12th #systemofjustice

🤠✨ Diving deep into the soul of America with @Beyonce’s latest masterpiece, “Cowboy Carter”! 🎶 As a dancer, choreographer, and lover of all things movement, I can’t help but be swept away by the powerful storytelling woven into every track. From the rhythmic stomps echoing resilience to the electric beats pulsing with the promise of tomorrow, this album is a journey through time and space. Each song feels like a dance waiting to happen, a canvas for movement and expression. As I listen, I can’t help but envision the stories to be told through dance - tales of struggle & triumph that life gives all of us. Beyonce’s fearless exploration of America’s history is a reminder that anyone’s history can not be erased, instead you can move forward and walk in the light that best honors who you are and who you want to be. Overall this album inspires me to push boundaries, challenge perceptions, and create art that speaks to the heart of our shared human experience. So here’s to “Cowboy Carter” - an album that transcends genres, defies expectations, and reminds us that music and dance have the power to unite us all. Let’s keep moving, keep creating, and keep dreaming together. 💫 #cowboycarter #beyonce #artisticexpression #americanhistory #albumreview #creativefreedom

Unnamed family in North Carolina (ca. 1940) Colorized version . Image 2: Original photograph . The only fact known about this photograph is that the people were migrant workers travelling from Florida. For historical context, during the era of Jim Crow it was dangerous for Black Americans to travel in the South. They were often harassed by law enforcement for no cause or attacked by White vigilantes. Moreover, they frequently were barred from restaurants and public accommodations. The Negro Motorist Green Book or simply the Green Book was a annual guidebook for Black American travelers. It was conceived and published by an African American, New York City postal worker Victor Hugo Green from 1936 to 1966. During this period legal discrimination against African Americans especially and other non-whites was widespread. . . . . . . . . #blackartinamerica #blackart #artlover #collecteurs #artcollector #collectart #blackartcollectors #blackartlovers #contemporaryart #shelovesblackart #blackphotographers #photographyart #vintagephotos #vintagephoto #1940s #americanhistory #blackhistory #blackhistory365 #blackhistoryfacts #northcarolina #florida

Albert raised prize winning horses (that he showed at the State Fair so often and successfully that he later received a lifetime pass to the State Fair), dealt in real estate, and was a farmer. He also played the organ for St. John's and his daughter Ellen followed in his footstep and they were in the choir together. Albert passed away January 1, 1922, only in his 50s. Blisters. Open sores. Excessive sweating and oh the stench! We complain now about our feet, but wow what horrible foot health people had prior to Henry Faulkner's invention of the ventilated shoe. #Onthisday, April 29th in 1890, Black inventor Henry Faulkner received patent no. 426,495 for his amazing shoe and boot design. Unlike modern shoes crafted with soft materials, early footwear consisted of rigid leather, hard rubber, and even wood, prioritizing protection of the feet. Faulkner's innovation addressed foot health by strategically placing holes within the shoe and incorporating a raised arch for enhanced circulation and comfort. His patented design took off quickly and within the decade it could be found in footwear, especially expensive footwear, across much of the globe. Faulkner's invention was significant not only for its practical benefits but also because it represented innovation by an African American inventor during a time when opportunities for recognition in the patent system were very limited for people of color. Regrettably, there is limited information available about the life of Henry Faulkner, and his impact on contemporary clothing design remains largely unacknowledged. Despite existing during a time when cameras had been invented, this innovator's image and identity seem to have faded into obscurity. This lack of recognition mirrors our collective unawareness of Faulkner's role in advancing apparel tech, particularly in the realm of breathability and comfort. Today, many modern shoes and clothing items integrate various ventilation elements, like mesh inserts and small holes to enhance air circulation and minimize moisture accumulation. Therefore, the next occasion you put on your cozy footwear and your airy attire, take a moment to remember Mr. Henry Faulkner and his contribution to our well-being and comfort. #Remembrance #AmericanHistory #BlackInventor #Footwear More info: https://buff.ly/3UrXJiy https://buff.ly/3Qk3dKT. https://buff.ly/4aUCa0W Images 1) Image of Faulkner's patent enlarged enhanced for viewing. 2) Ads from the late 1890's featuring the "Ventilated Shoe" patent. #MonumentMonday. Every week I’m posting a different Civil War monument. The statue of Abraham Lincoln on Union Square was dedicated in 1870. It was paid for by the Union League Club, a gentleman’s club formed during the Civil War to support the Union cause. It was sculpted by Henry Kirke Brown, who also did the equestrian statue of George Washington on the same square. Lincoln is holding a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. The stone pedestal has 36 stars representing the U.S. states at the time of Lincoln’s presidency. Though the people loved the statue, over the years placing laurels and gathering there for Decoration Day, the critics hated it. Brown opted to depict him wearing a contemporary suit but holding a Roman toga over his shoulder—this choice wasn’t well received. The New York Times called it a “frightful object” and offered to raise money to sent it to Chicago. Later a stone wall was added engraved with the famous line from his 2nd Inaugural, “with malice towards none, with charity to all.” This was was lost when the Lincoln statue was moved from the square’s southwest corner to its present location in 1930. Today it’s aligned with the George Washington statue and the Independence Flagstaff. #abrahamlincoln #henrykirkebrown #civilwar #uscivilwar #ushistory #americanhistory #statue #sculpture #newyorkcity #nyc #unionsquare #tourguide

After nearly twenty years and 58,000 deaths, the United States’ military campaign in Vietnam came to a ragged end on April 29, 1975, with Operation Frequent Wind, a two-day operation to evacuate Saigon. With North Vietnamese troops closing in on the capital and Congress refusing to allow the war to continue any longer, the US military had to resort to helicopter airlifts to evacuate approximately 7,000 people, two-thirds of whom were Vietnamese refugees. (The circumstances proved so dire that service members had to famously push empty helicopters into the sea in order to make room aboard navy vessels for more to land). Not everyone could be saved, however, and the fall of Saigon proved a sobering capstone to what was then America’s longest and most spirit-crushing war. #vietnam #fallofsaigon #evacuation #saigon #vietnamwar #1975 #otd #onthisday #onthisdayinhistory #postcardsfromourpast #history #militaryhistory #americanhistory #worldhistory #operationfrequentwind

Have you ever wondered about the first African American Secretary of Labor? Well, it was this woman, Alexis M. Herman. Herman was born in 1947 in Alabama. During this time, Alabama schools were racially segregated. So, her parents sent her to parochial schools where she could experience more diversity. After high school, she went onto Xavier University of New Orleans, where she graduated with a degree in sociology in 1969. She entered politics in 1977 under Jimmy Carter’s administration as the director of the Labor Department’s Women’s Bureau. At the age of 29, she was the youngest to ever hold this position. Later, during Bill Clinton’s administration, she became the 23rd Secretary of Labor, and the first African American to hold the position. Throughout her career, Herman has fought for racial equality and women’s rights. Big ups to Ms. Alexis M. Herman. #BlackHistory #OurHistory #AmericanHistory #ItsJustHistory #FirstBlackSecretaryOfLabor #AlexisMHerman
