Arab Americans were part of the significant and dynamic organizing for Metro Detroit, Michigan and the United Auto Workers. Specifically playing major roles in the the Flint Sit Down Strike (1936-37), the Battle of Over Pass and Ford Hunger March (1937), and the UAW Walkout (1973) with demands for Israel divestment, the liberation of Palestine, and improved working conditions on the line. The Arab-Isreali War inspired a newly created 1972 Arab Workers Caucus (AWC) to connect their demands both at home and internationally for common goal of organizing and liberation. They received a good deal of outreach and guidance from activists in the League of Revolutionary Black Workers who stood in Solidarity with the Palestinian cause, seeing Arab Workers as their brothers and sisters across the diaspora. By late October 1973, demands levied by more than 2,500 Arab Workers to dump Israeli bonds had led to a series of walkouts initially led by Yemeni workers at Chrysler’s Dodge Main plant. Each week the walkouts grew in size and target. On November 28, 1973, 5,500+ Detroit auto workers, led by AWC, walked off their jobs at Chrysler’s Dodge Main plant, demanding that the leadership of their union, the United Auto Workers (UAW), divest from Israel. The strike, which was organized by the union’s recently formed AWC, was centered around an event taking place that same day in Detroit: Leonard Woodcock, the president of UAW, was set to receive a humanitarian honor from a Zionist organization, B’nai B’rith International. Walking off brought production to a halt with protests against the UAW’s complicity in the colonization and illegal occupation of Palestine, and demanding dignity and respectable work conditions on the line. Last night’s Board of Commissioners meeting was intense to say the least… as I sat there and quietly fought through urges to cry… shout… hug… and challenge the power in the room one thing remained clear; the people of Cabarrus County are hurting. We have got to do better! Every single presentation and public comment lent credence to the need for our policy makers to prioritize Affordable Housing! CabCo Down Homies showed up in large numbers last night to introduce our current initiative, “One New Fund, Many New Homes” which proposes that our County Commission allocate at least 1% of our local budget towards affordable housing. We had no idea that the report from the 2023 Child Protection and Fatality Team and EVERY single individual who stood up for public comment would actually help substantiate our ask… but it did! When so many of us are being squeezed so tight, why doesn't Cabarrus County invest in affordable housing? Down Homies headed to the Cabarrus County Commission yesterday to speak out to them about spending 1%of the budget to help secure affordable housing in the county! The county currently spends $0. Why? Because with rent and housing prices outpacing wages in the county, local residents are being faced with hard decisions: Can we even stay here in the place we call home or will we have to go? That's not a decision anyone should have make when they love and contribute to their community and are proud to call it home. But for too long,the county has prioritized businesses and profits over people, and we are asking for our fair share. One new fund, many new homes!
