Another little project that has been sitting in the cupboard awaiting some TLC... A Kennet tool and cutter grinder. It needed some slight modifications to allow diamond wheels to be installed which I finally got around to doing over the weekend. Seems to be working rarther well and certainly makes a great job of the tooling for the metal lathe and milling machine. Hopefully screw cutting tooling will be a breeze on this and god knows what else. A little project I have been meaning to get done for a good while now.. Ten points if you can guess what it's for?? Pretty happy with the new coaxial bore clock gadget! Made quick work of indicating the hole on the mill table to within a few microns..(Will post a video of it spinning about in a moment) Sometimes small Mills can be a bit of a pain to clamp things down and space can be a bit tight.. Not had something this awkward for a while but just managed to fit it on with a millimeter to spare! Hopefully the thing works as intended after all this faff and a few hours lost.. The making of custom threaded parts.. yet another job that is best suited to production in a reasonable quantity. Whilst the machines are set up it's better to make a load at the same time. These will be 36 cheese headed screws for the bass drone clamps. They secure the lower parts of the bass drone together and allow easy maintenance with everything able to come apart at a later date. I could probably buy them ready made but where's the fun in that! Well after saying my current job was a bit boring.. they did take a good picture.. These are mainstocks which have been seasoning away for a good while and I am now in the process of reaming the holes to final diameter. They tend to go very slightly oval so a little tinkering usually restores the holes to their rightful circularity... or roundness if you prefer that term. Hello all! Not been on for a while as things have been very busy once again.. Have mostly been making reeds and developing a new chanter model so not much to post that would be greatly interesting... Finally I seem to have the new chanter working pretty well and am putting it out of the R&D stage and into production! It's based on the work of the Rowsomes and is an exciting new direction for me.. I am currently turning a few of this model some of which will hopefully going to the pipers club in Dublin to assist with their pipes on loan scheme. I always enjoy making these for this initiative as it has been very successful and hopefully greatly aids in younger folks getting their hands on good quality sets to start out on.. Probst dudelt im irischen Kilt 🇮🇪🍀 Torfiger Whisky Duft steigt in die Nase und Dudelsack-Klänge füllen den Raum: Um in die Ferne zu reisen, braucht man keine langen Flüge. Last night's job was measuring all these little lovelys... A Set of drones to go with the set somewhat in the style of Robert Reid. Again Narrow bore D and in reasonable condition excepting a few leaks and trouble spots which will be dealt with following measuring.. The bass drone leaks like a seive and the regulators have some blocks needing attention, so today's project is to attempt to get the lower sections of the bass apart and see what can be done to put it back to good order. Well, summer seems to have landed and heatwaves to go with it.. Despite my efforts to keep the workshop cool enough to tune and voice chanters I seem to have failed yet again... Next year I want a room that stays cool in the heat so work does not get disrupted.. might be a bit hard with outside temp reaching 30°C already.. Always the same, trying to maintain 20-21°C heat in winter with a fire and cool in summer with reflectivey things seems to be an issue despite a well insulated workshop.. even opening the door brings the heat in each time so probably a bit futile. I never attempt to tune and voice a chanter in peaks of low or high heat as things always resume to normal and the work would produce something very much not desirable or standardised. Reeds almost falling out of reed seats in attempts to flatten things and the opposite pushed in right up to the throat to do the reverse make for a different end result so will have to hope the heat can be gotten rid of tonight and I can resume that work later. While the reeds settle from the scraping, its measure old sets day today! This set is attributed to Malcolm MacGregor and dates back to the early days of the Uilleann/Union pipes history around 1810!! Beautiful turning on the delicate ivory mounts and just fantastic craftsmanship from the golden age of foot powered machinery. These would have undoubtedly been turned on an early lathe and Mr MacGregor was obviously a gifted and well practiced hand with a turning tool. Reeds,reeds,reeds! Am working on Concert pitch again this week and it's time to be scraping some of these down and seeing what works and what does not.. I actually enjoy the quiet time spent making reeds and scraping them down and hearing them make their first sounds (or nasty noises as some tend to do).. Just like chanter woods, not all bits of cane wish to be reeds and seem not to transition well to being in their new form. We do what we can to work with the raw material, but it has its say, and we must go along with that to some large extent... I was asked recently how do you keep track of all the different reeds and their very various configurations...? It's a good question, and in short I number them and keep a detailed notebook! Standard reeds with a tubing staple tend not to be greatly different in their build but others with narrow heads and hand rolled staples can become hard to identify as soon as they are finished and sit in the reed box or a chanter cap. I number each rolled staple with a number stamp and keep a record of these dimensions in my notes for each and every reed. I have a set of standard staple dimensions, each with the alloted number, and this is visible at the bottom of each staple if a little binding is unwound. Each reed has its own number also, independently of the staple as these may need to be changed for slightly differently dimensioned ones in accordance with the tuning requirements of the chanter in hand. The rest of the details are also carefully recorded, so each reed is identifiable in the case that it needs to be. All entries in the notebook are in pencil and if the reed works, they get noted in ink, and if not, they get rubbed out and replaced with another reed. Details are kept as to which chanter they go in and where that chanter goes ( customer/far off land) this helps to make new reeds and have some chance of them working as I know exactly the model and type of chanter they are for and can look back on my notes from when that was made. Not always so easy from a distance but better than working blind! 🤞 Am happy to elaborate if any folks have questions 👍

Four chanters ready to get reeded, tuned/ voiced.. The end of a long process of making which has spanned a good number of years since the timber was in a log. Careful seasoning of the billets, drilling of the main bore followed by more seasoning and checking.. Never a quick job but all part of the process to get to this important and final stage.. A word of warning ⚠️ Unless you have made the chanter or regulator yourself... never attempt to alter the holes or bores on any instrument as you will undoubtedly be ruining the makers intentions and possibly spoiling something most likely just needing a bit of reed adjustment or a new reed. Chanters are very carefully tuned and voiced before leaving the makers hands and many a fine stick has been ruined by folks having reed issues. Please do not take a tool to things.. Go back to the maker if still alive and have them look at it, and if not, seek a trusted living maker instead. Most things can be fixed with reeds!!! Warrantys are made void if instruments arrive back in most folks workshops if tampering has occurred in any form.. Anyhow, on we go... once a good reed has been selected, the tuning and voicing process can begin.. This entails careful cleaning of the toneholes, undercutting on some, scalloping with others ( on concert pitch) and bore adjustments with special reamers. This process has its risks and its never a simple job.. Its slow and steady and is done over a number of days ( or weeks sometimes depending on the chanter) Opening a hole or undercutting it does not only affect that hole and its note but can change things drastically upstream and down so caution is always required. Each bit of wood and each reed has its preference and quirks and we must work with the natural material and let it direct which actions we take to make it play optimally.. Not all chanters want to be chanters and the same with reeds so some just don't make it.. That's life in this game but we use these tools to bring otherwise stubborn notes into tune and that's why its important not to alter things after this process has taken place.. Preparation of the cane for the double reeds used in chanters and regulators.. Cane arrives in tubes and is not, as some have asked, bamboo but Arundo Donax which is known as Spanish cane. All traditional woodwind reeds have been made from this for a very long time and if used well and with a bit of luck, it makes very nice reeds which are hard to match in tone and playability with any other material. I have always persevered with making the reeds for my pipes out of cane as it is what I am used to working, but there are a couple of alternatives like Spruce and certain other wood species. Some other makers are having good results with these but I have yet to get a moment to experiment with it.. perhaps another rabbit hole in itself!? All my tubes get carefully selected, split, dipped to ascertain density and then stored according to their origin and density ready to be made into reeds... Bit of a job, but it's always good to have plenty of it ready for working it up. New gadget landed in the workshop last night! Die filing machine...Quite a rare find for me 🥳 Have been looking for one for a good while but without any luck. Was just about contemplating making one from castings and this little English made beauty turned up.. Sadly, without any machine files, so, if anyone has any, I would be interested to hear about them 😉 Otherwise I will have to find a way to adapt hand files somehow. Need to strip.it down when time allows and see how they are held properly. Might be good for keymaking for the pipes or other toolmaking jobs I am sure? Will have to wait and see as I have never used one.... solid bit of stuff anyway.
