I’ve posted this promo flat a couple of times for previous ‘Illmatic’ anniversaries, but 30 is a big one, so here it is, in honor of the man Nas and his debut album, two undisputed GOATs of music and culture. I got this ‘Illmatic’ promo flat in 1994 at Merle’s Record Rack, then located at the Connecticut Post Mall here in my hometown of Milford, CT. I moved back to Milford a year ago, and I’ve since had an opportunity to visit @merlesrecordrck, now located one town over—a nice trip down memory lane (pun mildly intended). The first I ever heard Nas was thanks to “It Ain’t Hard to Tell,” a cassette single I quickly copped and wore out that same year (the Blaupunkt in my ‘77 Chevy Nova did not, in fact, eat tapes, but I just played it death, yet I kept the cassette for the past 30 years—see slide 2). ‘Illmatic’ dropped and it blew my brain (of course), so I asked the dude at Merle’s if he could hold onto this LP-sized flat for me when it was no longer posted up in the store window. About a month later I got it, and it hung in my bedroom for my remaining high school days, was ever-present on my dorm room walls throughout college, and I ultimately had it framed in 1999 before moving to L.A., where it hung in my Hollywood living room for nearly 21 years (currently it’s carefully packed away in storage until I move again). 50th HIP HOP ANNIVERSARY REFLECTION: In the fall of 1996, Flava Unit Management scheduled me to have a sit down with Brian Leach who at the time served as head of artist development at TVT Records/Blunt Recordings. The goal was to produce a record which could build upon the momentum already established by one of hip hop’s dopest MCs. Mic Geronimo and I gathered at Unique Recording Studios to record “Street Life.” Monifah joined us to blaze the hook. Another amazing moment for the culture. A thought came to me. Anytime I needed a sample to be played over I called upon David Caton to bless the keys. If I needed a vocal consultant or a reference track to be laid, Timiny Figueroa was always a phone call away because of my relationship with “Clean Cut” Craig. Clean Cut introduced me to the truth that black church music was already being thoroughly enmeshed in the hip hop sound. Both communities shared some of the same sacred symbols and held fast to different facets of the same eschatological hope. One final thought. Mic Geronimo is so dope. Monifah is an amazing genius. Brian Leach was and is a consummate professional. So I woke up at 4am to finish my album and send it for distribution. And I see this. Additional unauthorized debit from a company I’m in dispute with. Decimating my bank account and the funds I needed to use to pay for the final masters and distribution today. So rather than finish working on the album, I was making furious emails and frantic phone calls all morning, culminating in me sitting endlessly in the bank branch right now to get that charge (and another one from this company) reversed, which may take days. I’m so grateful they are able to help me but damn. I’ve lost the last day to submit this album so it has any hope of being out by Christmas. If you guys knew. How horribly heartbroken I am. 💔😭😭😭 how much I wanted to give you, especially my VIPs, this album. I can never begin to explain all I have been through to make it happen. And even this morning I was still struggling to make it sound good. I spent every day, in between massive day job deadlines and negotiating desperately to keep my house, learning and trying everything I could to make it sound right. The music is absolutely beautiful!! but it sounds like crap because I have no idea how to make it sound good, because I lost my producer in my divorce and I have no funds as you know. This entire year...I’m celebrating! 20yrs of living out my dreams, turning a passion into a profession. They say that most people go their entire life without having a true passion for something. So if you’re able to not only find something you’re passionate about but take it a step (or several steps) further, you are truly blessed & fortunate in this 🌎. I posted a photo of this promo flat for the 25th anniversary of ‘Illmatic’ on my @melodyhauntsreverie licensing account (before I created this vinyl—and music ephemera, etc.—account), but today (4.19) makes the 27th anniversary, and I now have a much better iPhone camera, so here’s a fresh new pic to honor what is arguably the greatest hip-hop album of all time and a personal top 10 album for me. I got this ‘Illmatic’ promo flat in 1994 at Merles Record Rack at the #ConnecticutPostMall in my hometown of #Milford, CT. ‘Illmatic’ dropped and it blew my mind (of course), so I asked “Merle” (or whomever the dude at the shop was) if he could hold onto this LP-sized flat for me when it was no longer posted up in the store window. About a month later I got it, and it hung in my bedroom for my remaining high school days, was ever-present on my dorm room walls throughout college, and I ultimately had it framed in 1999 before moving to L.A. It has hung in my Hollywood living room for nearly 20 years. A happy 27th anniversary to truly one of the greatest albums of all time. Time IS illmatic...
