Airport food doesn’t normally do much for me, but I have to admit that the food at the SLC International Airport has improved dramatically over the past few years with the airport’s renovation and expansion. A good example is the perfectly cooked, crispy fish and chips at Market Street Grill, which is outstanding, as is their blackened ahi tuna. Not bad for food on the fly! I have been crossing paths in the restaurant world with Chef/Restaurateur Michael Richey for longer than either of us care to remember. It’s been quite a ride. Richey began his culinary career, if I remember correctly, in San Francisco before coming to Utah to help launch Pago with Scott Evans. He would move from there to St. Bernard’s restaurant at Solitude Mountain Resort before opening his own eatery, Fireside on Regent. The latter suffered the bad timing that many new (and old) restaurants experienced as COVID 19 reigned havoc on businesses large and small, but especially those in the hospitality industry. I have enjoyed Michael’s cuisine at all of the aforementioned restaurants and have had many memorable meals at them. But none has been any better than a recent Saturday night dinner with my wife, Faith, at Wildwood, where Richey is Chef/Owner, having taken over the space that was formerly Avenues Bistro in 2020 and, with a light and deft touch, turned it into the very appealing Wildwood. I say that Michael treated the space with a light touch because although he has made improvements - especially in the kitchen - most of the neighborhood charm and cozy comfort that owner Kathie Chadbourne had created at Avenues Bistro remains totally intact today. It is truly a neighborhood gem. And, judging by the full patio and early dinner crowd at 6:00 pm on a recent Saturday, I’m not alone in thinking Wildwood is a special place. One of our very favorite restaurants is @sicilia_mia_trattoria_utah in Millcreek / Holladay area (SLC). It is an elevating dining experience, award winning, highly rated restaurant. They serve Italian food, with the freshest pasta, delightful dishes & flavors, that leave you wanting to return often. It is not only so delicious, they create a wonderful atmosphere and experience. It is the perfect location for special occasions for a couple or a group. We love so many items on their menu! The Arancinette Alla Carne bite-sized balls of rice & meat, oh my! The bruschetta pomodoro is the perfect mixture of flavors. The Carbonara is our favorite item on the menu- it is tossed in a wheel of cheese & set on fire! The pizza is amazing as well. Deadpan Sandwich is one of my favorite food stalls at Woodbine Food Hall and their motto is “Sandwiches for your problems.” I had never had wiener schnitzel in sandwich form before, but the Oh Schnitzel sandwich at Deadpan is killer: tender, tasty pork schnitzel with ranch-kraut, parsley, dill, and mayo on toasted white bread. We had the pleasure of bringing lunch to our aunt recently from her very favorite restaurant, @shirleysbakerycafe in Provo. She loves the Shirley’s Seasonal Salad with the Rasberry Vinaigrette dressing. The salad is packed full of goodness, including romaine lettuce, strawberries, walnuts, mozzarella cheese, onions, and pulled turkey. Shirley’s was so nice & let us buy a tub of the delicious dressing to go. They also have many comfort food items, made from scratch daily, such a rolls, pastries, bread, sandwiches, and soup. Great place to meet friends, and a staple of the community for 20 years. We called ahead & they had the food ready to go when we arrived. Of course we couldn’t leave without adding white rolls to our order. So good! We can’t wait to return!

And without talking with the owner about their practices, there’s usually no way to tell from the outside whether a restaurant is sustainable or not.⁠ ⁠ “Too often,” said Adam Cold, the chef and owner of the Salt Lake City restaurant Roux, the label of “sustainable” is “used as a marketing strategy and not a way of life.”⁠ ⁠ If you want to get to the bottom of whether a restaurant is actually sustainable, there are several areas to look at — including what they do with their food waste, how they conserve energy, where they source their ingredients and how they treat their employees.⁠ ⁠ Cold said that at Roux, “I like to be realistic, and do what I can to contribute, but not be dishonest with the customer and say stuff like, ‘Everything’s local and everything’s sustainable,’ because that’s a very, very hard goal marker to achieve. For a taste of Germany, head to Weller’s Bistro in Layton and be sure to get a side order of their delicious homemade spätzle while you’re there. Spätzle is a Central European egg noodle dish especially popular in Austria, Switzerland and Southern Germany. The noodles aren’t really noodle shaped, but rather look like tiny dumplings. Ever since Shelly DeProto opened the original Caffe Molise back in 1993, I’ve been of the opinion that the lasagne there - based on Shelly’s mom’s recipe - is the best in the state. I stick by that opinion now that Chef/Owner Fred Moesinger runs Caffe Molise. It’s a traditional take on lasagne, with layers of fresh pasta, seasoned beef, Italian sausage, ricotta and Asiago cheeses, smothered in Caffe Molise’s fresh pomodoro and topped with a generous amount of grated cheese and chiffonade of fresh basil. Last, but certainly not least, when I visit Park City I like to dine at Cena Ristorante, located in The Chateaux at Deer Valley. One of my favorite pasta dishes comes from Executive Chef Clement Gelas’ kitchen at Courchevel Bistro in Park City. In France, Crozets de Savoie are small buckwheat pasta squares – sort of like square buckwheat gnocchi. We discovered the cutest place for brunch! @marmalade.brunchhouse is located downtown SLC, just a few blocks north with free & easy parking. It is so cute inside, the decor creates a fun atmosphere. The food is delicious, with options for everyone. The Berry Lemonade Mocktail is so refreshing! They made us a custom Ratatouille Hash, minus the eggs - packed with yummy veggies. The side of fruit & avocado made the meal perfect! Can’t wait to return. Perfect place to meet clients, friends, family, celebrate a special occasion, or just start to a lovely day.

We discovered a wonderful tea shop recently. @teazaanti not only has an extensive tea selection, they also have great food options. In the past few months since it opened, Koyoté restaurant has been written about by, I think, every food writer, blogger, and “influencer” in Utah. So, I figured I’d better go find out what all the fuss is about. As they say, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Located in the Marmalade neighborhood, Koyoté is the creation of Chef/Owner Hiro Tagai, who worked for about a decade as head sushi chef at Happy Sumo before moving back to his home country of Japan to study at ramen school (yes, there is such a thing) and to work in ramen shops. After returning to the U.S. he helped open Purgatory with the Sapa Restaurant Group and also worked at Briar Handly’s HSL. Personally, I love what he’s done with the industrial space on 400 North which was formerly home to offices. The design is sleek and contemporary, but with a very warm and inviting vibe. I couldn’t write a roundup of favorite noodle dishes without including at least one pho fave. I couldn’t do a noodle article without ramen, right? Currently, my favorite spot for hearty bowls of really good ramen is Toro Ramen in Midvale. Chef/Co-Owner Sunny Tsogbadrakh and his team offer up a number of different styles of ramen and all come with a soft-boiled egg, bean sprouts, corn kernels, noodles and julienned green onion.. But my favorite is probably the most traditional: Tonkotsu is a creamy, slow-cooked pork bone broth that is heavenly, served with two generous pieces of chashu and all of the aforementioned ingredients. There is so much to love at Matteo Ristorante Italiano, where Matteo Sogne’s mother makes much of the fresh pasta from scratch. One of my favorite dishes there is Calamarata allo Scoglio. My daughter and I stopped by the new Houston TX Hot Chicken in Murray yesterday for lunch, courtesy of @yelputah and @hhc !! I had a chicken sandwich + tender and my daughter had the Southwest Salad. I love all of the food created by the Soberanis brothers, founders of Sobe Eats - whether it’s from their food truck, catering business, or drive-thru takeout location in Sandy. One of my favorite menu items from Sobe Eats is the Birria Rice Bowl. It begins with beef short ribs slow-cooked for seven hours. Then, the delicious shredded boneless short rib comes with cotija, guacamole, heirloom beans, pickled red onion, crema, salsa macha, regular and watermelon radish slices, black sesame seeds and cilantro. There is still time this ski season to enjoy the incredible on-mountain fare at RIME Raw Bar - located at Deer Valley Resort. There’s a lot to love at RIME, from oysters on the half-shell to lobster stew, crudo, clam chowder, French dip, and more. But my favorite menu item at RIME Raw Bar is the Connecticut-style Lobster Roll. Tender morsels of fresh Maine lobster are stuffed into an authentic hot dog-type bun that also comes from Maine, adorned by nothing more than sweet melted butter. Quick stop by Bout Time in Layton last week and I got their Philly Cheesesteak for the first time. It was really good, I’m glad I made myself get something other than one of their burgers (which I love). Their hand cut fries are always great too. I forgot to take a picture of Thom’s chicken sandwich but he loved it. Also, for some reason they brought him a salad as his side instead of fries but he just shrugged and ate it and it ended up being amazing! It’s huge for a side salad and full of things like bacon, tomatoes and hard boiled eggs. He was GLAD they made the mistake! @bouttimepub
