This afternoon we headed back inland to another hilltop town, this time Corinaldo. Hoping we’d be able to spend the night in their Aire, we had our fingers crossed that as it was Sunday, we might just be lucky. Arriving at the town though, the main street was closed and the town had a fiesta going on. Every single parking space was taken and the Aire was chockablock. We finally managed to park way outside of town but it was well worth the walk. Stalls lined the streets, there were games for the children, a mime artist, an impromptu game of handball with the net strung across the road, and what looked like the end of a race with all the participants throwing coloured powder at each other. A really happy atmosphere. It’s been so nice to have a lazy day. We’ve moved inland by a whopping 14 miles (including a detour for shopping!) and it feels as though we’ve gone back in time to an altogether more rural Italy. Longiano wasn’t in our guidebook or even our radar but a review on #park4night recommended exploring the town when using the free camper area - so we did. The rain stopped and we enjoyed views across the countryside from the town’s castle. That’s when we decided we’d have lunch and then take a walk through the orchards (cherries, peaches, olives and peas) to the next hilltop village. It was warm enough to walk in t-shirts too. Beers were cooling in the fridge and we fancied one when we got back to the van, so that was it - decision made - we’d have a beer and stay for the night 🍻. Cesenatico wasn’t our usual choice for a coastal visit but we were pleasantly surprised by the buzz in the old town last night. We couldn’t work out if it was a regular Friday night or a special occasion. Unfortunately no photos as we went along the long street that had been shut off - stalls of all kinds lit up along one side (delicious smelling fish being the main street food on offer) and seating along the other. It was reminiscent of visiting Venice in August, and much as we may have wanted to linger, Rudi hasn’t had much experience of such crowded places and seemed quite anxious. He did very well though, especially considering there were so many tasty morsels being dropped on his path 😋. We arrived in Sirmione by 10 this morning to spend a couple of hours before heading to the east coast, and the place was already heaving with visitors. Getting photos with minimal number of people wasn’t easy 😅. The old castle had a long queue when we got there, which was even longer as we left, so we just admired it from the outside. Its old centre was a mix of tourist shops, cafes and restaurants being made inviting for the lunchtime crowds. So lovely to see orange trees in the town centre too 🍊. A great place to wander around but extremely busy. We’re now settled at the coast, jammily getting the last spot at a fenced Aire. Well, it wasn’t quite the chilled day we thought we might have but it’s been a good one nevertheless. Starting with a lovely walk to the small archaeological site at Tremano, lunch and a nice wander beside the river at Brivio, stopping off at Bergamo to climb up, up, up from the city below to its old, upper district for views, then on to Lake Iseo to stroll along the water’s edge this evening. It’s felt like a proper Spring day too; we even felt like indulging in the most delicious pistachio and ricotta ice cream this evening. It’s been a looong day. A woodland dog walk in Germany to keep Rudi happy, followed by another when we were over the Swiss border. The mountain passes aren’t open yet so it was a couple of hours on Swiss motorways (with lots and lots of tunnels - no wonder there’s a charge to use them when you think how much they’ll have cost to construct and maintain). A few photo stops along the way and on towards Lugano where we’d sussed out an Area Sosta Camper close to town, planning that we’d stay a couple of nights. Over 2 hours spent in rush hour traffic, first finding that the area was full, then driving (crawling) around to try and find somewhere else to stay. We’re now a good distance from the beautiful Lake Lugano but snug in our mountain abode. We made the most of the sunshine this morning, moving on just half an hour to a viewpoint high above the River Sûre. Rudi however was not impressed with the platform as he could see through the gaps in the boards and became rooted to the spot. We had a lovely walk through the surrounding woodland though (which was much more up his street) then continued on our journey south after lunch. We’d all had enough of motorways (Rudi included, who was getting pretty vocal in the back) so used #park4night to find a suitable place to stop. The first one was great for a cuppa and a dog walk in the woods but we wouldn’t have felt comfortable to stay the night so moved on half hour to another free dedicated MoHo place on the edge of a small German town this time. Whilst we love to travel slowly, we’re intent on finding warmer weather so we’ve continued across Belgium to Luxembourg, stopping after Brussels for a dog walk and picnic lunch at Bois Sainte-Anne on the outskirts of Wavre. After a pretty decent journey down, we were lucky to be placed on the next available train - a full hour earlier than our booking. The smugness didn’t last long though as we were asked to pull over for checking; our first time going through an x-ray machine (well, the van, not us; we had to get out whilst the van was hauled through what looked like a huge car wash). Much better than having to remove everything but we were both initially puzzled when they asked what the liquid was near the battery, before realising it was our water container they were referring to. All good and done speedily too. Luckily we found a supermarket open once we were over the Belgian border (which we weren’t expecting late on a Sunday afternoon) and were able to stock up in readiness for the start of our trip proper in the morning. A brisk walk in the chilly wind, a veggie chilli washed down with a Belgian beer (it would’ve been rude not to) and we’re now snug for the night - the only ones here on a free parkup we’ve used a couple of times before when we’ve shared it with several others. We did get it tinted finally by the way. Was a little disappointed they didn’t do the little bit of glass under the A-pillar. The place in Boston who did my mk7.5 was able to do it no problem. Otherwise it came out great. My previous car. A 2018 GTI SE 6 spd. I do miss her 😥 This was my 3rd GTI in a row and was an absolute gem. Bought it new and put 6 yrs and 60K miles on it with not a single issue (minus a creaky sunroof in colder temps). Though I love my new mk8 the mk7.5 definitely had some things I preferred about it. Primarily the infotainment / climate controls which worked seamlessly & were very intuitive. I’ve gotten used to the mk8’s but if I could swap with my mk7.5 I would. I loved this car and it was always there to get me around when I needed it. When i get a new car, I always tell the dealership NOT to detail the car before they give it to me. For me it’s a bonding experience to give my new ride a proper wash (2 bucket method) and thorough cleaning.
