Does anyone remember the Florida attraction that showcased 113 different breeds of dogs? It was called Dog Land. Located between Oldtown and Chiefland, Florida, the eight-acre tourist attraction opened in 1960. Dog Land was the brainchild of Bob Shetterly, who wasn’t actually a dog person. “He grew up on a farm and had a very pragmatic approach to animals, but he went to a dog show once and had a brainstorm,” recalls his son Will Shetterly, who, along with his father, mother, and two young siblings, lived at Dog Land. “When Dad came up with the idea, dog shows were rare.” Shetterly and his partners Vincenzo Calvaresi and C.J. Wade, who was head of the Lexington Kennel Club at the time, convinced 32 other dog enthusiasts to invest in the attraction. A press release boasted that 11 of the dogs among the collection at the attraction were champions, some valued as high as $2,500. According to Will Shetterly, leading breeders of the day from around the country not only supplied the dogs at no cost, but probably paid for the privilege to have their dogs on display. That's because visitors could place an order to buy a dog from any of the breeders while there. Future plans included a Dog Hall of Fame and a Greyhound racing track, but Dog Land closed in 1974. There was a Kentucky Fried Chicken in the gift shop. Will Shetterly wrote a "fantasy" novel based on his own childhood experiences at the tourist attraction. It is told from the perspective of an adult named Christopher Nix who recounts the story of his family's move to Florida from New Orleans when he was four. The purpose of their move is so that his father can open a tourist attraction that exhibits every breed of dog recognized by the American Kennel Club. He published the book in 1997.
