I spent the day at the @cityofjax @jaxlibrary today doing research on #cedarriver. I was horrified to find about 50 stories and photos through the 60s to late 70s about the #pollution that was dumped into the #river by at least five local corporations regularly. What was once a beloved swimming and fishing destination for #Jacksonville #riverlovers was turned into sludge thousands of fish and wildlife dead in 1975. Happy Birthday to John James Audubon born April 26, 1785. Audubon, one of Americaโs first great watercolor artists, traveled to St. Augustine, Florida in 1831. He explored the northeast part of the state before making his way to Key West in April 1832. On May 7, Audubon delighted in seeing his first flock of pink flamingos. The famous wildlife artist discovered 52 new bird species to draw for his Birds of America (1827โ38) book. The Greenshank bird is pictured in front of the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine. Audubon was accepted into the scientific societies in Europe and spent a great deal of time meticulously observing wildlife. His detailed field notes carefully recorded their habits, behaviors, and physical characteristics. On this print, however, Audubon appears to have made a mistake, for the Greenshank, a European bird, had not been seen in America before or since this drawing. It is believed Audubon mistook it for the Greater Yellow Legs bird. The depiction of St. Augustine in the background may have been drawn by Swiss illustrator George Lehman who accompanied Audubon on this trip to Florida. For over three hundred years, St. Augustine was the most important city in the Southeastern United States. It was chosen by the Spanish due to it being easy to defend as well as having easily accessible freshwater. St. Augustine was to serve two purposes: as a military outpost, or Presidio, for the defense of Florida and as a base for Catholic missionary settlements throughout the southeastern part of North America. English pirates and corsairs pillaged and burned the town on several occasions in the next century. Clashes between the Spaniards and the British became more frequent when the English colonies were established in the Carolinas and, later, in Georgia. As a consequence, the Spanish moved to strengthen their defenses, beginning in 1672 construction of a permanent stone fortress. The Castillo de San Marcos was brought to completion late in the century, just in time to meet an attack by British forces from the Carolinas in 1702. Unable to take the fort after a two-month siege, the British troops burned the town and retreated. Our town has had many struggles, but it has remained through history as a thriving community no matter what turmoil it may face! #LocalHistory #FunFactFriday #StAugustineTrivia #StAuguatineStrong #HometownPride #LocalPride #StAugustineLife #Floridahistory #FirstCoast #HistoricCoast

In honor of Arbor Day, we celebrate one of Tallahasseeโs most historic and iconic features: its trees! ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ Tallahassee is renowned for its many large and beautiful trees and has been designated an official โTree Cityโ by the National Arbor Day Foundation for 31 years and counting! In 2000, Tallahassee Democrat writer Gerald Ensley wrote that Tallahassee โlies under a carpet of green.โ One of Tallahasseeโs arboreal features is its canopy roads. 72 miles of Leon Countyโs roadways are shaded by scenic tree canopies, many of which predate Spanish arrival in Florida. These canopies are primarily made up of oak, maple, and birch trees. There are 8 designated canopy roads in Tallahassee, spanning both the countyโs rural and metropolitan regions: -Meridian -Centerville -Miccosukee -Old St. Augustine -Old Bainbridge -Sunny Hill -Old Centerville -Pisgah Church Tallahassee has even boasted some celebrity trees, most famously the May Oak in Lewis Park. Beginning in the 19th century, the Tallahassee community gathered under this large Live Oak tree for May Day celebrations until the treeโs eventual collapse in 1986. Tell us your favorite Tallahassee tree or canopy road in the comments below! ๐ ๐ณ๐ฒ Pictured from first to last: Meridian Road in 1970, Lake Ella, May Day Celebrations at the May Oak in Lewis Park, the Lake Jackson Mounds, early 20th cent. #TBT! This week, it's a piece of Cortez history: the Albion Inn. The Albion Inn was built in 1896 by the Bratton family in Cortez Village. In 1908, A.M. "Joe" Guthrie bought the Inn, which was run family-style and had a large dining room that hosted fish and stonecrab dinners. The inn also housed a grocery store and post office. Originally, the building was constructed on pilings over the water. However, after the hurricane of 1921, the hotel had to be partially rebuilt and to avoid future disasters, and land was added in front of the Albion where water had once been. Guthrie continued to run the inn until it was sold to the Antilla family in 1952, around the time this photo was taken. The Antillas managed the property until 1974, when it was purchased by the U.S. Coast Guard and operated as a sea search rescue station until 1991, when it was demolished and a new Coast Guard station was built in its place. The oldest portion of the building, which was originally the Bratton Store, was preserved and relocated by to the Florida Maritime Museum by the Cortez Village Historical Society in 2006, where it remains today. ๐ธ: Manatee County Public Library System

DOVER, Fla. (WFLA) โ The man accused of โbrutallyโ murdering his girlfriend and her 5-year-old daughter in Dover has been arrested. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said Angel Gabriel Cuz-Choc, 31, fled into the woods after stabbing the victims, about three hours before deputies learned of the deaths. In a news conference Thursday, Chronister said that despite the โhead start,โ law enforcement teams โnever gave up,โ using undercover detectives, K-9 units and various technology to track down the suspect and take him into custody. โThis murderer, who committed this heinous, vile and unthinkable crime against these two innocent victims, is under arrest,โ Chronister said. At one point during the search, the suspect reached out to some friends for help, according to HCSO. They denied his request.โHe may have been able to outrun the visual sight of the deputies that were out here, but he couldnโt outrun the scent of this K-9,โ Chronister said. โThe K-9 took us right to him.โ Chronister said Cuz-Choc was able to slip out of his jacket and out of the K-9โs grip. He was taken into custody after deputies reached him. โThis murderer will now face the full weight of the criminal justice system for the heinous and vile murders that he committed against these two innocent victims,โ Chronister said. Cuz-Choc was removed from the woods to speak with investigators, who were attempting to interview him at the time of the news conference.

Nathan Cobb Shipwreck ๐ (From East Granada Blvd. turn south on A1A and travel about 2-miles south to 621 S A1A, at Cardinal Ave.) The Nathan F. Cobb was a three-masted schooner named after the shipbuilder and founder of Cobbโs Salvaging Company whose many rescues of stranded ships help lead to the formation of the United States Life-Saving Service. Despite its namesakeโs history of shipwreck rescues, the Nathan F. Cobb capsized in heavy seas on 1 December 1896 en route from Brunswick, Georgia to New York with a cargo of timber and cross ties. The cook and a shipmate drowned when they were swept overboard in violent seas. The crew righted the vessel by removing the three masts and they drifted for four days until they became grounded on a sandbar off Ormond Beach. Rescue attempts led to the drowning of volunteer Fred Waterhouse, whose body was never recovered, but no other crew members were lost. It should also be noted that a large wooden telephone pole is located at the Nathan Cobb shipwreck site to identify the location and warn swimmers about possible ship wreckage debris still visible on the ocean floor at low tide. Timber from the wreck was salvaged and a three-room cottage was built on Orchard Lane called the Nathan Cobb Cottage. #ormondbeach #ormondbeachfl #ormondhistory #florida #floridalife #floridahistory #oldflorida #floridabeaches #history #historic #historical #backintheday #volusia #volusiacounty #historicalphotos #historicalphoto #historicalphotography #vintagephotography #vintagephoto #vintagephotos #historicalplace #localhistory #localhistorymatters #historicbuilding #shipwreck #historicalplace #historicalsite
@houligans1990 Tim Curtis (owner), came up with the idea to open Houliganโs when he was a college student after visiting a popular sports bar in Atlanta in the late 1980s. Curtis eventually bought out the ownership stakes of his father and McRobert and took on veteran entrepreneur Gale Lemerand as a 50/50 partner in 2000.
