👀 peekaboo…. Yes that’s the piston ring exposed. Who doesn’t love some VW TSFI mishaps??? Last week had a gti lock up on test drive — bottom end just locked solid. Now this week is this CC. Granted this CC has been sitting the yard for about 2 years now, but you can see why. Now I have this cleaned up donor from an EOS all resealed and new chains kit, yea both chains and all guides, ect. New cam bridge, all new seals cuz she was a leaker, new coolant outlets and reusing the aluminum water pump on it. Thought the "Oh Crap" background was perfect for this post. After giving Lucy a complete mechanical checkup in preparation for this season's travels....I decided to switch to a vacuum advance distributor and get rid of the dreaded dead spot just off idle. Brand new distributor worked great, drove the bus about 5 miles, and came back to put it on the lift in order to check everything over. When I tried to start the bus, it would barely fire and wouldn't keep running. Finally, I traced it to the condenser in the new distributor. Can't believe it only ran 5 miles, but thankfully, it decided to die at home. Almost impossible to find quality parts these days. I always keep a fully loaded distributor in the bus as a spare when I travel....especially when I replace the points with an electronic system. Fun part about working behind other people is you never know what kind of surprises they left you. For example, on the '71 Beetle, the rear axle nuts were only finger tight...despite the fact they had installed the cotter pins. After removing the pins I didn't even need a wrench to remove the nuts from either side. One of these is not like the other....before I disassembled the carb on the '71 beetle, I checked the idle stop solenoid and it didn't work. When I removed it, I saw that a previous "mechanic" had removed it when it stopped working and simply cut the end off of it instead of replacing it. The owner complained that he needed to top up the coolant every few days of driving. During a high-pressure test, we are able to see coolant dripping out from the radiator. The car was diagnosed with major leaking issues in the engine and gearbox area. After discussing with the owner and looking at mileage touching 100k km, we advised to proceed with preventive maintenance since we need to replace most of the gasket and seals. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐕𝐖: Timing chain problems are an issue with this engine. Even though the timing chain system has been designed to be fitted for the life of the vehicle and has no serviceable parts, we are seeing problems. Not the only but the most common problem we are seeing has to do with the timing chain tensioner, this part holds the tension on the chain, it works by using oil pressure to provide tension, the oil pressure comes from the oil pump and is generated as the engine is started. The early versions of the tensioner have an issue where the chain tension is relaxed when the oil pressure is not present (engine off). This means for a split second when you start the engine the chain is relaxed enough to jump a tooth; this then puts out the timing and, in most cases, will put on the engine management light. If left unattended, this issue will keep happening and result in permanent damage to the engine as the timing gets so far out the pistons meet the valves. It will cost you a lot more if you do. We recommend replacing the timing chain tensioner, timing chain, guide rails, and all associated parts. There are quite a few, for preventive maintenance. A reminder to always service and check your car regularly to prevent more damage. VW Scirocco 2.0 Tsi EA888 engine rebuild due to coolant mixed up with engine oil issue. Many related parts were replaced to prevent any hassle in the future. The radiator was serviced and repaired some minor leak as well. One shot we rebuild the stock turbo with original parts. Turbo balancing is done to prevent any vibration that may affect the performance and reduce the lifespan.
