Saxon and Koszi were doted on this morning welcoming enthusiastic visitors, 5 and 7, with their grandparents for a Familiarisation with Horses session. Living on their own farm these young men are very familiar with livestock, less so with horses. So we started by saying hello at the gate, horses and humans given the opportunity to approach in their own time as each felt comfortable. One-on-one time getting to know Saxon in the yard, introducing words and linking them to actions: observe; curious; feeling; acknowledge; still; calm; safe; breath; and a fun phrase for a pair of energetic boys; "in a flap"(especially when encouraged to show me what this might look like before bringing Saxon in). With sadness , dear Ella (the brown & white horse) and little Darcy (sheep) both left our world in the last couple of weeks. Both were very old and retired and lived a happy many years on the farm with Arthur. When Darcys friend, Scout passed, Darcy became part of the equine sessions. 💜 and dear Ella was always part of our sessions, even though she was arthritic and couldn’t do the longer walks, she occasionally joined us and was always part of the beginnings of our sessions, often getting a groom or massage. She touched many lives and will be greatly missed by Arthur 💜💔. He’s doing pretty well considering and is receiving lots of love. I mixed a personal recipe for happiness yesterday afternoon - taking my favourite season, autumn; at my favourite time of day, heading towards dusk; in one of my favourite places in the world, McLaren Vale. The icing on this 3 ingredient cake was savouring each moment in the presence of one very special Arabian mare. Meandering along the Shiraz Trail 'Kite' drew many admirers, attracting a small unicorn lover and her friends, running down the hill outside @oxenberryfarm to say hello. A hush fell as I raised a gloved hand on their delighted approach, signalling for the children to slow down, pointing to my left side to form an orderly queue and letting these beautiful little humans know we'd give the black horse some space. Kite will lower her head to say hello when she feels comfortable - so let's be quiet and patient. Kite took it from there. Even as the most fearless youngster wandered momentarily out of sight, along the horse's side toward her back legs Kite remained still as a statue. No warning stomp required. Just curious, friendly and oh-so-gentle. Thank you to Elisa for capturing these soulful moments and kindly sharing your photos. As they say, the best laid plans of mice and men - or horses and women in this case. Our Good Friday bookings this year switched to Easter Sunday at the last minute, conditions equally as inviting for swimming over the cracking long weekend. The second time our guest and Kite had met, Kite showing me she felt at ease with her partner from the start while a holiday buzz picked up around us. A little 'oodle-esque' dog running over to investigate with misplaced confidence, evading the attempts of the owner to scoop him up out of harm's way, lurking around the Arabian's back legs with an occasional yap. Kite's signature way of responding - unflustered, sensible, considered - needing no translation between the three species present. Standing perfectly still; slowly lifting one back leg up a fraction off the sand; stomping it down in exactly the same place. Just the once. No need for harm. Dog pauses briefly then quietly turns into the arms of his owner. Message received. Brumby Koszi thrilled to be back at the beach, eager to join me in the water and like a kid in a candy store, damn near diving into the sand afterwards! Followed by a standing snooze to dry off in the warm sunshine, then lunch at the float. A flamingo, a seahorse and a dinosaur leisurely floating on the lake-like ocean captured the attention of 'Koszi' and 'Kite' as we strolled onto the sand with our guest on Easter Sunday. A stunning long weekend here so I was prepared for this to be the busiest we've seen on the Fleurieu, yet amongst the great variety of South Aussie beachgoing activity the four of us easily relaxed into a sublime beach walk following a dip in the morning. Nat, natter, natst Er valt genoeg regen en door de hogere temperaturen wordt alles heel snel groen. Today another mental image of mine materialised. Last May, rescued gelding Saxon and I welcomed a new guest and her support worker in our little sand yard at the farm to try a 'Familiarisation with Horses' session. She'd previously tried Riding for the Disabled and this was something new in the presence of horses. After 3 sessions in a controlled environment on private property, reading my horse's remarkably sensitive and considerate behaviour in her presence we agreed next session to meet in public at the forest. Since that time in Aug '23 I've held an image in my mind that looks a lot like this first photo. Placing faith in Saxon, his partner, my co-worker for these sessions and importantly, myself. This is how WalkSublime's proprietary offering 'Ability with Horses' came about. "One day I'll live on a farm with big dogs and multiple horses.” Around 2004 back in Sydney, I started mentioning in everyday social contexts the future I saw for myself, recently returned from a two year working holiday in London. I didn't know where this farm would be other than somewhere in Australia; the slightest thing about farming; how to train large animals; nor how to care for horses. Least of all how this was to miraculously materialise. Nonetheless, I was 100% certain it eventually would. Zoals de titel het al zegt ligt het allemaal iets genuanceerder. Nieuwsgierigheid Nieuwsgierigheid is een eigenschap die ik graag stimuleer in paarden. Tijdens wandelingen loop ik dan ook met regelmaat iets rond de singel regio of achterstevoren, zo kan ik goed zien waar het paard zijn aandacht heeft en of er kleine signalen zijn die aangeven dat ze iets willen onderzoeken. Het lijkt soms insignificant, zelf denk ik dat het veel kan betekenen voor een paard dat je kleine signalen oppikt en ze de ruimte geeft om uiting te geven aan in dit geval nieuwsgierigheid. Hoef, zweet en haren Hoeven blijven toch ontzettend fascinerend. Ik weet uit ervaring hoe belangrijk goed bekappen is. Ik heb echt het idee dat dit onderschat wordt. De hoeven spelen een hele grote rol in de problemen die paarden tegenwoordig hebben. Gezonde hoeven kunnen alleen tot stand komen door natuurlijke voeding, beweging en goed bekappen. Ik zie er altijd een beetje tegen op om Noah zijn hoeven te doen. Hij vindt het lastig om langer één been omhoog te houden. Daarom moet ik snel werken en kan ik het niet altijd zo precies doen als ik zou willen. Maar het geeft toch weer een voldaan gevoel als het weer klaar is. For those of us lucky enough to have an aunty "into horses", what a blessing we receive at birth. Growing up I spent holidays with my aunt and uncle in an old woolshed on their farm near Tamworth, NSW and given my aunty's 5 beloved horses, it seems this time was to shape my life more than I could've known. Imagine my delight speaking with a lady wanting to share a walksublime with her aunty while she was visiting from New York. And so last week there was a little feeling of The Big Apple in the forest, drawing out a koala to mark the special occasion! Saxon was in no hurry on this particular day, initially taking his time to stop and consider before proceeding, keeping his partner on her toes. Schietwilg - Salix alba - Knotwilg Een beetje laat in het jaar om de schietwilg te snoeien. Het best isl in de winter, van november tot februari, maart kan nog net. Een praktische boom wanneer je regelmatig takken wil kunnen snoeien voor je paarden. Schapen zijn er trouwens ook dol op. Molly knabbelt graag en was ook duidelijk in haar element toen we een bos brachten. Good day from Mandariino . Mandarino is one if our full retired horses. He is 23,/24 yrs old and came back in 2019 with his herd of int otal 6 horses. He was a super Endurance champion but fully broke his front legs . Thankfully he had a major surgery with 13 screws and recovered, but not for Riding. Due to the pain he went through he was a very aggressive and unapproachable horse. I never trained him nor did any groundwork with him, I just told him, I will love him forever unconditionally, he can stay aggressive ,I don't need to force any love or touching him...and like a magic ,he changed by himself and became one of our top " healer horses " .Everything there is a Soundhealing session,he is the first to show up and volunteer and eventually he will allow people also to touch him . ❇️Please support us . Nu het gras nog niet hoog staat De eerste emmer is alweer gevuld met Jacobs kruiskruid. Onze paarden eten er niet van wanneer ze op de wei staan ze hebben dan ook altijd toegang tot hooi. Om te voorkomen dat deze plant te veel uitbreidt doe ik regelmatig een rondje en steek ik ze uit. Dit is nu het gras nog niet hoog staat goed te doen. Ode aan Rubus fruticosus Ofte wel de gewone braam Vaak wordt er gemopperd op deze plant. Naast dat hij hard groeit, maakt hij ook nog dikke stevig takken die meters kunnen reiken en zowel de takken als het blad zijn bezet met doorns. Door de grote hoeveelheid stikstof in de lucht en bodem groeit de braam goed en komt hij veel voor. Dan kunnen we alleen maar van geluk spreken dat paarden er dol op zijn en zich niet laten afschrikken door die doorns. Waarom er geen 'giftige' planten in mijn boek staan. Het grazen in het landschap plantenboek. Wanneer men hoort dat ik een boek aan het schrijven ben over de planten die Noah en Molly eten tijdens onze wandelingen wordt er vrijwel direct aangenomen dat er ook een lijst met 'giftige' planten in komt. In mijn boek beschrijf ik meer dan 100 planten, aangevuld met ervaringen, weetjes en foto's. Mijn doel is paardeneigenaren wegwijs te maken in de plantenwereld zodat ze weten wat hun paarden eten en dat ze hun paarden kunnen vertrouwen. Paarden die hun instinct lang niet hebben kunnen/mogen gebruiken hebben wat hulp nodig en dan is plantenkennis noodzakelijk. Door de nadruk te leggen op wat allemaal wel kan kom je er achter dat 'giftigheid' iets genuanceerder is dan men vaak denkt. Zaterdagmiddag ontdekkingstocht Zowel Noah als Molly zijn niet bang uitgevallen en gaan graag op ontdekkingstocht. Zo was dit stuk bos altijd afgesloten met gaas, het zijn sparren waar kersttakken van geknipt worden in November vandaar de aparte vorm. We zijn hier heel vaak langs gekomen maar we konden er nooit in, nu is het open en konden ze even rond kijken en natuurlijk jong gras eten. On the move around the farm yesterday, lots to do in preparation for extreme heat and bushfire conditions tomorrow. Bareback riding comfortably round 'Kite' from our lovely big winter paddock on high ground up the back - so golden now that Brumby 'Koszi' virtually blends right in - down to the lush summer/autumn paddock next to the house. Untouched since last winter this paddock comes into its own at this time of year with big trees for shade, plenty of feed and proximity to the house in case of emergency evacuation. Sharing in the buffet with 'Torquey' and 'Quattro', access here managed tightly to avoid any one horse over-indulging. En route practising our fancy side step repertoire, lining up parallel to the gate under the willow tree to open and close behind us, no need for dismount now. Kale bomen herkennen Her duurt niet lang meer tot het blad weer aan de bomen zit zonder zijn de takken soms moeilijk te herkennen. Dan is het handig om zoveel mogelijk typerende kenmerken te hebben om er achter te komen om welke boom het gaat. Zeker wanneer bv een vriendelijke buur je knabbeltakken aanbiedt voor je paarden. Chelidonium majus en Bellis perennis Stinkende gouwe en het madeliefje Beide hebben ze er al zin in. Het madeliefje staat her en der al in bloei als de zon een keertje schijnt. Sublime Sundays at Normanville Beach... oh how I love South Australia. Handing over the lead to my pair of magnificent ex racehorses on Sunday morning, 'Quattro' and 'Torquey' matched to natural horsewomen living and working here from France. Torquey living up to his name with a great display of torque, emerging from the water all 600+kg of him springing up from a sensational roll! Luckily I didn't need to rely on my high school French, the universal Language of Horses being much like that of Love. Fitting, given our guests' country of origin. I was careful to point out in advance there'd be no riding involved, keen to avoid any misunderstanding of what we're about: tuning into the horses, being present with them. Soaking up each glorious moment. Imagine my delight when one of the ladies clearly communicated she enjoyed simply spending time with her horse back home, moreso than riding itself. Joy written all over our faces! Wow. Like certainly attracts like. Fraai haarmos en grove den Grove den is in middels mijn favoriete plant die ik inzet bij luchtwegproblemen. Hoesten en snot kan ik er heel goed mee onder controle houden bij Noah. Wanneer en na een storm takken van de bomen zijn gescheurd verzamel ik ze en hang ze op.
