$5 Dollar FRIDAY 🐴TOM🐴 Tom came to Faithnfriends 2/20/24 from a person who had bought him from the Omish. Tom is broke to pull a wagon/cart and ride. Poor Tom had been "rode hard and put up wet". Tom is vet estimated to be a 2007 model. He is a Belgian Draft Gelding. He has scars all over his body from his years of 'work'. Tom has went through our quarantine process and he has some major issues with his hooves. He had not had hoof care in a very long time before coming to FNF. He will have a follow up vet appointment on 5/16/24. Fingers crossed for good news. Tom has also been on a refeeding regimen, he requires daily handling and care. Due to Tom still being in recovery at FNF he is not up for adoption at this time. Horses are individuals - so why treat them all the same? Different bodies, different minds, different needs. Every horse is different yet many times we've seen people try and treat them exactly the same. But no horse has lived the same experience, so we can't expect them to just orderly follow along with others. From a physiological perspective, horse bodies are different. This means they have different nutrition requirements, different sizes of gear, different energy needs, different medical treatment. And that is obvious. But when it comes to the mind and behaviour, we can't expect all horses to be the same. One of the things we do at Hoofbeats is support the individual - each horse is treated in a way that supports them best; whether it's from rugging to haltering, to where they can be touched to how we train them. Many times we ftheind that one training technique works for one horse but not as well for another. And that is completely okay because we want to find what works best for that horse. And we can take this mentality for any horses we meet or work with - they're all different. They have their likes and dislikes, and we need to respect the horse that's here right in front of us, not just assume. They deserve support best suited to them. It might take time to find what works, but it is truly worth it and the horse feels seen and heard.

Can you help us to give Nifty the care he desperately needs, and the happy future he's always deserved? Ted & Nifty were brought to us by the RSPCA in February, after working with their owner to improve life for these boys. They had been living amongst many other horses, and their environment was far from ideal, as they rarely left their stable or had regular access to the outside for years. Despite the limited life they had been living, it was easy for us to get to know Ted & Nifty, as they have the most amazing, sweet personalities. Once they had settled in and received their health checks, vaccinations & tests, the next stage of their recovery was to receive a dental check. Unfortunately, for Nifty, we discovered that one of his large molar teeth had broken off, leaving only half a tooth and a large void, which has lots of food built up inside of it. Fractured teeth can cause serious problems including infections, which can lead to sinusitis, weight loss and behavioural problems. We need to get Nifty the help he requires urgently, to prevent this sweet soul from developing any further complications. With x-rays carried out, it’s clear to see that the tooth’s roots are also decaying, which means this half tooth may not be stable and could even break apart when it is extracted. As a result, poor Nifty will need to be referred to an equine hospital and a specialist to ensure he gets the best treatment possible. The cost for Nifty’s surgery is estimated to be £2,500, which is a huge expense for our charity. We would be so grateful for any donations towards Nifty’s procedure, which will make such a life-changing difference to his welfare. Today is a day marked to thank and celebrate these wonderful beasts of burden, they’ve been part of our world for over 7000 years since they were first domesticated! Since then they’ve done all sorts from transportation of goods on the Silk Road, to providing therapeutic activities for people with special needs. There is a vast list in between those two things. Feelings are complex. We as humans, have made it that way. We like to label things, categorise them and designate them good or bad. But feelings aren't that - they're just information. They're just a response to a given moment. All feelings have a purpose, you don't just feel them for no reason, it's feedback. The problem is, we humans tend to either prevent ourselves from feeling something, or hold onto that feeling for too long. This is when we start to see them as 'bad' or 'good'. Horses don't do this. They don't see feelings this way. They don't see them as weakness or wrong. It doesn't define them. They feel what they feel in the moment, let it happen, let it go, and go back to grazing. It's just information to them. So don't hate yourself for feeling what you feel. It's real to you, it's extremely valid and there is nothing wrong with it. If you're avoiding a feeling or it's prolonged, ask yourself why? Consider getting support with it, because there is no shame in that. It's the way we are wired, to overcomplicate things, so sometimes we need a little support to get back to being more horse.

“Nothing compares to the therapy a horse can give.” -Unknown Meet Fred, the sweetest rescue horse I got to spend time with on Sunday. As a girl, horses were my therapy. I talked, they listened. They felt my body language and I felt theirs. I started riding when I was 8 and continued through middle school. Horses trusted me and I trusted them. In my late 30’s, I remembered how much I missed my horse time and realized I needed to find time to prioritize being around horses so I started riding again. Now in my 40’s, I find time for snuggles, grooming and occasional beach rides. I am hopeful that one day I will have time to volunteer regularly to help rescue horses. Match play: 9.3 (You are never really out of it.) Scramble: 8.6 (You gotta hit the shots, but you are gonna have some birdie looks). Really fun course. The fairways are a little narrow (think the demographic that loves #momala, but not as narrow as #noem support*) but the rough is negotiable, so you still have a look at the green from most well struck drives, fairway or not. • The threes: Great holes. It helps that I was three under for the two threes (including a one / #Donthatemebecauseimbeautiful) but they are both good, solid holes. Trouble if you get twitchy, opportunities if you cowgirl/boy up. Both fair, no tricks. That said, both require really precise shots off the tee. Sand on both.
