We were very lucky everything lined up to get 10 of our group to the NW Summit of Mystery Mountain (AKA Mt Waddington) last week, but it wasn’t a gimme. @ferris8595 and Nic went to the top of the Dais Couloir the day prior with @danimal_r to suss out conditions and find a route through the crevasses so we didn’t waste time in the dark 🙏 Approaching the Angel Glacier, we found a huge 140cm deep windslab and thought we were going to have to turn around, but managed to sneak our way around it and the crevasses (photo #4). The Angel Glacier was boot top wind snow, which was tough trail breaking (highlighted when walking under the seracs). Having 3 rope teams and guides was a blessing here so we could leap frog to keep moving while one team had a break. The bridge we thought we spotted over the bergschrund turned out to incomplete, but with a few minutes of shovelling we managed to fill it in enough to cross. What looked like a cruise boot-pack to the summit turned out to be 20cm of powder on top of ice, requiring a pitch of ice climbing. We were rewarded with powder skiing right off the summit, which I believe only happens once in a blue moon. It was @marcusofthemountains birthday, so we gave him the privilege of ski cutting the slope above the bergschrund (he did cut out a windslab). I’m very grateful for the experience. Guiding the Nose of El Capitan last week seemed like a strong start to rock climbing season. . My client Matt put the time in with me training for the climb - in the past year he and I climbed the Prow of Washington’s Column and the West Face of Leaning Tower as well as a number of days free climbing and working on skills. . It’s never easy climbing El Cap, and Matt and I stuck to our planned schedule - one night on Sickle Ledge, one night on El Cap Tower (with rope fixed above to the top of the Texas Flake) and night at Camp V and a night on the top. My first @amga1979 Single Pitch Instructor Assessment of the season was certainly one for the memory bank. Students did a great job keeping it pro through some less desirable conditions on day one, and I was able to have my own educational skills put to the test by shifting curriculum around and getting creative with venues, skill progressions and risk management. The learning continues, walking towards new terrain. Again far from home, but stepping and skiing firmly on other terrains, living the seasons to the fullest, experimenting. One more step in my ski guiding career, 10 days of ASGC (advance ski Guide course) in Valdez-Alaska, one of the greatest mountain ranges, how much terrain is out there, how many experiences can be had when you put a group of human beings looking to learn and share. Started early from Milan we reached Saas Fee at 8AM and after a quick warm up walk in the village, we skinned up all the way to the top of Alphubel a really nice 4000 meters peak in the Mischabel group. This summer will be packed with rock climbing and alpine climbing! Right now I’m in Bohuslän, my favorite training ground, the perfect place to build the foundation on which I’ll be standing on during all of the summer adventures. Es con mucho orgullo que damos por finalizado la certificación de los nuevos guías de Trekking & Líderes de expedición en montaña aspirantes UIMLA 2024, poco a poco la familia trekkinera va creciendo, cada participante se va con muchas experiencias nuevas aprendidas y también con objetivos logrados, el aprendizaje para un guía líder es continua, hay camino aun para recorrer, la AGMTB EGITM ve en cada uno de ellos un futuro promisorio.
