Spring is in the air on Svalbard. Close encounter with @melissa_schaefer 💙 It is midnight, but full daylight. On the ice floes of the open fjord in front of the glacier, birds and seals are resting. A white-beaked dolphin leaps out of the water, playing and feeding. A polar bear swims towards a seal resting on an ice floe. It is seemingly unaware of the danger closing in. As the bear gets nearer, it quietly dips below the surface to hide from the seal. A few feet from its prey, the bear leaps out of the water, trying to strike the seal with its powerful paw, but the seal quickly jumps off the floe just in time to rescue itself. This time of year the sea ice starts to dissolve. In some areas it happens quickly, with the ice breaking up into drift ice and retreating north. In other areas it is a process over weeks, or even months, where the ice slowly melts and unites with the cold water. From the first days of spring, when the sea ice starts to break up and the snow covered tundra thaws, the arrival of new life begins. One season ends and another begins. The coastal plains and tundra slowly turn green, and soon millions of birds - little auks, guillemots, sandpipers, ptarmigans, geese and many other species land on the high latitudes of the Arctic to breed along the cliffs and land bordering the Arctic Ocean. When the birds arrive, so does summer.

Day 108 saw us despairing around lunchtime that we’d never get past a certain patch of open water, and then we found a series of ice islands and scampered across. And then we got caught in a massive dead end. But by backtracking and working around, by evening we had found a large flat section of ice. We drove 62 km in total but just under half - 30km - was actually south to Greenland.
