Celebrating seeing my first Luna moth (Actias luna) of the season!🌙 This guy was pretty freshly emerged when we first spotted him, but made an impressive transformation in just 2 hours - first picture is from 6:30 pm, the second one was taken around 4:30 pm. ⬅️ You can tell that this moth is a male because he's got quite bushy antennae, which will help him detect pheromones from female moths. Since I have just about no knowledge of aaallll of the things that can wrong with deer, I won't even speculate on what was going on here with Ms. Doe🩹🩺 This was the only bone that I found from her with such a significant deformation, but I didn't have all the parts and pieces to look at. For reference, the bone on the left is typical, the one on the right is atypical - same bones, from same deer, just from different legs. A Spring Peeper (Pseudacris crucifer) blending in with the fall leaves🍂 This species is famous for all the peepin' they do in the springtime (in the northern U.S.) and can be easily identified by their small size and X on their backs. The X on this froggy friend is pretty pale and didn't show up great in this picture, but it's there if you look closely! Favorite funky fungus that I've found lately! I'm thinking that this may be Leucopholiota decorosa, but I'm not 100% sure. Initially I thought that this may be a Pholiota species, but after some reading, I'm mostly convinced that my mystery mushroom is L. decorosa. There were no mature specimens around, and I didn't want to destroy this little one to try and get a more confident i.d., so, I'll probably never know for sure! 🤷🍄 Found growing on a Beech log with partially adnate (still attached) bark. There have been bunches of Ash Tree Boletes (Boletinellus merulioides) popping up lately!🍄 These funky fungi are closely associated with Ash Trees - of course - BUT, B. merulioides aren't in a mycorrhizal relationship with the trees. Ash Tree Boletes have formed a symbiotic relationship with aphids! B. merulioides offers protection to Leafcurl Ash Aphids (aka Wooly Ash Aphids) in exchange for food from the aphids. Aphids find refuge in the fungus's mycelium, setting up camp in pea-shaped tissue structures underground, and aphids' honeydew (sugary liquid produced by aphids as they consume tree sap) offer nutrients to the fungus. These teeny tiny, yet hugely complex relationships in nature are just incredible! I have the pink grasshoppers back in my woods again. These are rare genetic mutations of female nymphs. This can happen to the Meadow Grasshopper (pictured) and also the Field Grasshopper. I have found both this week which I am amazed at, including partial mutated specimens ( will post some pics of those). The colours on this one looks like a transformer 😀.
