“God doesn’t give you more than you can handle,” many have spoken to me in times of really hard things. It often makes me feel like the Lord has a funny idea of the things that I am capable of handling. However the saying is not true. He absolutely gives us more than we can handle. He shows this time and time again throughout Scripture, when his people are tasked with things that seem insurmountable, in times of grief and loss and famine. I’m sure you know Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, but to give you a future and a hope.” But have you read the verses that follow?? “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity” (Jer 29:12-14). We often see grief, loss and hardship as a punishment, but these are very human thoughts. We don’t think like God. Isaiah says that his ways are higher than ours — he sits high up in the mountain tops, while we are in the middle of a forest but only see the trees right around us. His purposes are eternal, good, purposeful. His chief goal is his glory and the sanctification of his people. And he often uses the hard things to shape us more like Christ. John Calvin said, “Since God knows well how strongly inclined by nature to a slavish love of this world, in order to prevent us from clinging too strongly to it, he employs the fittest reason for calling us back, and shaking off our lethargy. ... [He] makes his people sensible of the vanity is the present life, by a constant proof of its miseries.” When we call to him in our suffering, we find him. This is not for our harm. Many of the times we walk through difficulty and hard things, and it is not to punish us, but rather to make us more like Jesus and to draw us closer to himself. Another hasn’t returned your texts in ages. But Jesus? He’s not too busy for you, not bored by you, not giving up on you, not leaving you. People will come in and out of our lives. Our circumstances may drastically change. Isn’t it a relief to know that Jesus is the constant companion through it all? He will forevermore equip us, walk with us, empower us, love us, and at times, even challenge us. What a friend we have in Jesus. Jesus said, “ ... be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)’
“But even if he doesn’t.” Daniel 3 portrays a story of three men who won’t deny Christ, who refuse to bow down and worship other gods, who will not waiver in their beliefs, who stand firm with certain hope, with joy not based on circumstance — even in the face of death. They are content with whatever happens to them. They stand firm, knowing that the things that are happening now are light and momentary in the face of eternity. They know that the Lord can save them from the fiery furnace that the king wants to throw them into, but even if he doesn’t, they are steadfast, full of hope and do not waiver in the truths of the gospel. In his anger, King Nebuchadnezzar throws them into the fiery furnace. All three of them. But, when he looks, to his dismay he sees FOUR men walking in the furnace. FOUR. They are walking around, unharmed. And the fourth man “looks like a son of the gods.” Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego survived the fire. Jesus was with them in the fire and he brought them safely through. But, even if he had ordained that they would not survive, he still would have been with them. Jesus will never allow you to be utterly destroyed, for even if you die, if you know Jesus and are his child, eternity is yours forevermore and has been sealed for you through the life, death and resurrection of the true and better King, Jesus. But even if he doesn’t save your loved one. Even if he doesn’t prevent the cancer diagnosis. Even if he doesn’t provide you with a spouse or children. Even if he doesn’t step in and make your trial go away. Even if he doesn’t protect you from suffering. Even if he doesn’t save your marriage. Even if he doesn’t answer “yes” to your prayer. You are not abandoned. You are not unloved. You are not unworthy. You are not being punished. You are not forgotten. “But even if he doesn’t” rescue us from whatever blazing furnace we’re thrown into, whatever trial or season we’re walking through right now, Jesus is in the fire with us. No matter how bad it looks or feels like, we are never, ever alone. Jesus is in our midst. He will save us, he will guide us and he will protect us, even if we die. #thegracescripts

It can be intimidating to take a book as big as the Bible and chip away at it, carefully studying it verse by verse to learn about God and live in light of His truth. Be encouraged that God wants you to know Him (Jeremiah 29:-3). Because of this truth, we can be encouraged that what God has called us to do, he will also equip us to do. Friends, this is such good news! That means that YOU can study God’s Word and ask for wisdom and you can understand His Word. The good news is, it’s like riding a bike. At first it seems daunting and like you may never get it, but once you do — you will find that God’s word is life giving, full of hope and a well of deep treasure to spend time knowing Jesus. And once you learn how, you’ll never stop learning, but the more you learn, the more you will grow in your love for Him and the sweeter his words will become. May we seek to know Christ more through the pages of His Word whether it’s five minutes or an hour and five minutes or somewhere in between. So that we can say with full confidence, “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. I am thankful that we serve an unchangeable (Mal 3:6), immovable, faithful, sovereign Lord. His strength will never diminish, his promises will never change. His Word does not return void (Isa 55:11). His glory will not fade. His plans can NEVER be thwarted. He has and will always be faithful to me. The Lord is always working out his perfect purposes and plans. He has promised to hold us fast until the very end when we go to glory or he returns. And one day, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. May we say on that day and every day til then, “Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Preaching the gospel to ourselves is calling ourselves to return to Jesus for forgiveness and purpose. It is answering any doubts or questions that we may have with the promises of God. Do my sins condemn me? Jesus has paid for them with his precious blood. Do my works fall short? Jesus’ righteousness is counted as mine. Is the world conspiring against me? Nothing and no one can thwart the plans that God has for my life. No one can touch me and utterly destroy me because I am held safely in the arms of Christ. He has promised to hold me and care for me forever. Can I really deny myself, carry my cross, and follow Jesus? Yes, for God is at work in me, willing and working in me for His own pleasure. This is what it looks like to preach to ourselves. To do this well, we must know God’s word, meditate on his promises and believe them. We preach the gospel to ourselves primarily through the disciplines of prayer and meditation of Scripture. In prayer, we look to the Lord to graciously meet our needs, and through that act we exercise our faith. In his exposition of the Lord’s Prayer, Thomas Manton said, “Prayer . . . is a preaching to ourselves in God’s hearing. The gospel that saves us comes to us from God, who is eternally contented and full of joy in Himself. The person and work of Jesus is an extension of the divine joy that the Father, the Son, and the Spirit have enjoyed from eternity. The gospel is God’s way of bringing sinful, fallen humans into the very realm of His own eternal joy. Through faith in Christ we are enabled to fulfill our purpose, which is “to glorify God and enjoy Him forever” (Westminster Shorter Catechism Q. 1). False teaching undermines the gospel and as a result detracts from the glory of God that is displayed in it. Not only that, but assault: on the Gospel are assaults on the joy of the Lord. Paul loved the Lord too well (look at 1 Timothy) to allow such assaults to go unanswered. That is why he instructed Timothy to stay in Ephesus to refute the false teachers there. As a “steward” of the gospel he was obligated to rise to its defense. If we are in Christ, we have the same responsibility as Paul to insist that those teachers who would be teachers in the church handle the Word of God faithfully. Jesus summarizes God’s law in Matthew 22:36-40 and tells us that it requires supreme love to God and sincere love to people. This law demand that we resist false doctrine. Failure to do so tragically allows His gospel to be missed or perhaps even completely lost. My friend, do not regard false teaching lightly. Consider that God’s glory is at stake and insist that God’s law and His gospel are taught well. Do it for the love of God, His glory and for people. #thegracescripts #lawandgospel

Jesus is alive, reigning in heaven as the Lord of all and the King of kings. He showers us with the blessings of His kingdom, fulfilling His role as our High Priest and mediator between God and humanity. He brings life and understands our deepest desires. There’s a lot of life that is lived outside the corners of these squares. There’s a greater story being written behind every photo, caption and video. One of the things that I struggle with the most about social media is showing up and being authentic, sharing not just the joys + good gifts, but also wanting to share that there is grief, tears, and hard things that also exist outside the edges of this frame and app. Over the last several months there have been really sweet and joy-filled moments. Traveling to new cities, sharing ice-cream with friends, celebrating birthdays and new friendships. These moments that vou see on Instagram are real - they are good gifts trom a good and faithful God. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t also really hard moments and tear filled nights. Sometimes, showing up here feels forced or messy or inauthentic, but there really is JOY in every season and something of God’s character for us to learn because God is good and he is working all things for our sanctification and His glory. But there is also heartache and pain that exists — there is so much more to life than social media. Like many of you, the last few months (and to be transparent, the last 4 years) have been full of heartache, loss and grief. I have been through heavy, unimaginable loss. My friends have, too. I’ve shown up to friends houses with flowers, mailed cards and walked with them through heavy seasons of life just as they have walked through them with me. I’ve seen friends stand steadfast, immovable through hard trials and loss — and oh, how it has encouraged my soul to lift my eyes to Jesus! These are the moments that I’m not quite sure how to share. I feel a tension between showing up and sharing but also taking time to process, heal and grow with close friends and mentors. I’m thankful that God is a steadfast God. That he provides daily what we need and he allows forks in the road - seasons of failure, change, unknown, heartache and trials for His glory and our good. He is purposeful in all He does and He calls us to trust Him and Hope in Him in all seasons. #thegracescripts
