Sable Island Mare & Foal. While her mother drinks at a waterhole (this is the same band and location shown in yesterday’s post) the young foal leans in and plants her hind feet in the water. Waterhole Activity. A family band of Sable Island horses – stallion, two mares (one with a foal), and a young chestnut male – in a valley between the dunes. The sand in the floor of the valley is darker because it is moist. And it is moist because it’s very close to the surface of the fresh water table. There are many similar areas throughout the island, and these are places where horses can easily dig for water. West Spit Waterhole. After a short but intense storm overnight, it was another mild day on Sable Island, with some fog and relatively light winds. During the afternoon a family band visited a well-established water hole site on the West Spit. While the stallion was more interested in some other horses off in the distance, a young horse reacted with some irritation when the mare attempted to push her way in for a drink at the waterhole. Spring on Sable Island. Yesterday the day was cool, with a few hours of fog, max temperature 6.8°C, and wind getting up to 22 kts, but mostly <15 kts. This male is a tag associated with the family band in the distance. He is usually closer but found a patch of moist, fresh greens still hidden by the dry juncus and grass of last summer. When the band moved away, he trotted along to catch up with them, but this time hanging back just enough to avoid presenting an outright challenge to the band stallion. Photo Zoe Lucas. A Place Out of the Wind. Sable Island’s weather today was breezy with a northerly wind gusting to 25 kts and max temp of 5.1°C. Three horses—a young female, band stallion in the middle, and a mare (all still in their winter coats)—were resting in the lee of a low dune. The scuffed and flattened beach grass shows this is a favourite shelter spot for horses, one of 100s on the island. Three other members of the band were grazing in a nearby hollow. . Not a Horse in Sight. With about 500 horses on Sable Island, we might expect they would appear somewhere in every frame. The horses are stunning, intriguing, and for many they embody the spirit of the island. However, with or without horses, the landscape is captivating and expressive, and equally intriguing, always. A Grey Day on Sable Island. Today’s weather was mostly foggy with 100% humidity, a short burst of light rain, max temperature of 6.0°C, and an east-southeasterly wind peaking at 18 kts. In early afternoon a family band of eight horses was grazing and resting in the lee of a gentle west-facing slope. Band members are the stallion (dark brown with a large white snip), three mares, three juveniles, and one almost-yearling. The grey-yellow-brown vegetation cover hides new green foliage of spring. Trips to Sable Island Raffle 2023 winners! The winning tickets were drawn and announced yesterday: 1st prize (2 seats on trip) Dorothy Hendsbee; 2nd prize (1 seat on trip) Katie Hirtle; 3rd prize (1 seat on trip) Julia Naugler; 4th prize (1 seat on trip) Leslie and Doug Pezzack. This is the Institute’s 5th annual raffle. All have been organized with the help of our partner, Kattuk Expeditions. The winners will travel to Sable Island with their guide Fred Stillman (Kattuk) and will be met by Zoe Lucas when they arrive. After a briefing provided by Parks Canada, Fred and Zoe will accompany the group on a walkabout and exploration of the Sable Island National Park Reserve. All the Institute’s raffle trips to the island have been by air, either with Sable Aviation (fixed-wing aircraft), or Vision Air (helicopter). Seeing Sable Island from the air, on approach, is a remarkable sight and feeling. The two aircraft types are similar in many ways, but each offer some different advantages and experiences. For example, when arriving by fixed-wing, the landing on a sandy beach with the station jeep and windsock marking the start of the runway provides unique and exhilarating insights into routine operations on Sable Island. The photos were both taken in early October. The first shows a group of visitors on a high dune with Fred explaining some features of the landscape; and in the second, a group of male horses are socializing at Mummichog Pond (one of the destinations for visitors during the walkabout). Also travelling with this year’s winners will be last year’s ticket winner and guest. Their flight to the island was cancelled due to weather and their trip postponed to this October. . Early May on Sable Island. A view of Iris Pond (the easternmost freshwater pond on the island) with Bald Dune in the background. Windblown sand has accumulated along the north side of the pond, and the darker greyish area is a shrub-heath community still in its winter colours. Not yet showing from a distance, the green foliage of a variety of plants—strawberry, meadowrue, clover, rose, yarrow, violet, poa, and fescue—is coming up. Two horses, both males, are grazing in a sandy field.
