Sacred Endings 🔥 It’s been two weeks since I closed the Silence & Noise shala for the season. Such a bittersweet and complicated moment, and one of real solitude after such an overwhelming gathering of community around the space. I held my own little ceremony amidst the inward retrograde energy, reflecting, sitting in gratitude, and tuning into the many people that have passed through the space since last October. Endings are of course also beginnings, and the next iteration of the S&N physical space is already flickering in the embers of the old, brighter, more expansive and rich with learnings and experiences gathered through these special 7 months. I was surprised how quickly tears fell during my little ceremony, and equally surprised how quickly those tears turned to fuel for the future. But even as I look forward, always leaning into the manifestor aspect of my design; I know it’s important to acknowledge the shift, the passing of the baton, the transient moment. I was also super thrilled to receive the gift of the Seven of Pentacles, a card reminding us of the abundance of hope that surrounds us even when it feels like we are falling just short (again), a key that speaks of rewards for hard graft and digging deep. I always love to look at the card behind the one I’ve selected for a bit more depth and context - mine was the Ace of Wands, the ultimate new beginning. The reward for this long, expansive, gruelling, magical, empowering, exhausting and beautiful season here on the roof. Another helpfully timed reminder that the universe has ALWAYS got your back. But we don't spend nearly enough time solidifying these connections. 💜 But when you know better, do better. Now, that's all changed. Some of you may have noticed that I changed the name on my social media accounts, letting go of the "soul- crone" archetype...I dived "head first" into research, exploration and teaching about the female aging process in 2017, when I was right in the throngs of my second Saturn Return ( for my non-astrological peeps this is the planetary constellation, I consider the pivotal moment we start moving into the third phase of our lives) During these past 7 years I have taught many online, and in person classes about wise womanhood, conscious aging and conscious dying. Now I feel the call to turn the page, not by letting go totally of this subject, but not keeping it as the center of my focus. I continue to feel passionately committed to my coaching and astrological clients and to continue to work to empower women and advocate for women 's rights. So many things changed in these last years: I sold my Healing Arts studio, my mother and then my sister died, I trained as a priestess in the Avalonian tradition with the fantastic Bee Helygen in Glastonbury, my beloved dog died, we moved to Mexico and I started to take my poetry writing more seriously. I am excited that my first poetry book will be published this coming June. During this last year I also developed serious issues with my knee ( partly due to a severe accident I sustained when I was a teenager) which left me incapable of walking during some periods & I will most likely need knee surgery very soon. The interesting aspect of this is that having to radically slow down has given me the opportunity to focus more on my writing. It also has slowed me down considerably: having always been a very fast walker I now walk slowly: a different way of seeing the world.... I also now cannot go on my beloved long hikes. I am now spending a lot of time swimming in a gorgeous outdoor public pool surrounded by trees. This gives me a lot of joy. So yes it is true, all things happen for a reason! One of the stages of a butterfly’s life cycle is after the caterpillar has eaten, shed its skin and then hides itself in a chysalis. We on the outside can’t see what is going on inside of that thing but we do know something is happening. Something is changing. Destiny is forming. At the proper time, the caterpillar breaks free but it is no longer what it went in as. It is a butterfly. And even after breaking free, a butterfly doesn’t immediately fly off. It sits still, gets its bearings and pumps its wings with blood.. The BLOOD matters. The BLOOD helps the butterfly adjust. It will keep those wings up so that it can fly where it should. The drawing is one her last, done at the Lafayette, where she drew and “did art” as she called it, until the day before she passed. The Victorian is the home she grew up in, in West Hartford. Let’s talk about this piece, titled “Rebirth” 36 inches wide and 48 inches wide and the frame is 1-1 3/16th deep In the first quarter of this year I was a witness to my partner’s father’s last months with pancreatic cancer. I spent a lot of time thinking about death, endings and aging. In some ways I feel like it’s trite and simplistic to say that death leads to rebirth, yet in others I think that cycle of life/death/life as Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés talks about in women who run with the wolves is pretty spot on. While I was painting this I was thinking about cycles which is why you can see hints of circles or circular movements. I was thinking of the phoenix rising from the ashes, thinking how in life we have a million little heart breaks and losses that could end us or call us to rise. The strong yellow felt like the sun rising and the reds and blues are the remnants of the fire that brought us to rebirth. We were lucky enough to visit a neighbours garden and see the frogspawn in her pond. The rangers have been absolutely fascinated by life cycles so this was a great opportunity to study the frog life cycle up close. We spotted the mama frog and also the newts that they share the pond with.
