Hi again! Today, I have something super fun to talk about… @wmcampusrec ! Becoming a barre instructor has been one of my favorite #williamandmary adventures as it has introduced me to some of the kindest and most uplifting people I’ve ever met. I fell in love with group fitness as a way to build community after the pandemic, and I became an instructor after some of my favorite instructors-turned-friends encouraged me to do so! Spreading the joy of movement and holistic wellness is very rewarding, and teaching barre classes is always the highlight of my week. Leading fitness classes provides me a creative outlet to make punny themed playlists (like Justin BieBARRE and BARREiana Grande) as well as a chance to share energy, peace, and positivity with others amidst the sometimes stressful moments of student life. One of the coolest professional development opportunities I’ve had with Campus Rec was attending the Southeast Collegiate Fitness Expo (@sefitexpo) this winter! Birds, spring flowers and dragonflies inlaid in various woods and stained bone into an ebony ground and cross banded throughout . The marquetry with strong similarities to the work of the émigré Royal cabinetmaker Gerrit Jensen and his contemporaries and probably from his native Holland. For my first official post, I’d like to highlight one of the first things that drew me to #williamandmary, and something that keeps me constantly awed by and thankful for being here: our gorgeous campus! I remember getting a postcard from @wmadmission, what seems like forever ago, with the Crim Dell on the front and imagining myself walking across one day. When I first toured W&M, I had this feeling that was unlike anything I’d felt on other tours. The natural beauty of our campus with all of its amazing trees (we are literally an arboretum) made me feel at home before even knowing anyone here. Nowadays, I’m reminded of this warmth and gratitude each time I look at the natural landscape around me. This campus has been such a formative part of my experience that it deserves its own post. I hope you feel that same joy fanning through these photos! I also hope that this can serve as a reminder to take a few minutes every day, even if it’s as you are rushing between classes, to look around, take in the environment around you, and reflect. Whenever I’m feeling stressed, I step outside and am reminded of the grounding quality of nature and it is oh-so rewarding. The ultimate treasure of campus to me is the willow tree on the 2nd slide. I’ve loved it ever since I first saw it, and whenever I am heading to Sunken Garden or Sadler Center, I’ll take the long way just to walk by. It’s the cutest little tree and it always brightens my day :) As the sun is setting on my senior year at W&M (get ready for lots of puns this week, too), I am just so grateful to have spent four years in such a stunning place. #onthisday 30 April 1662 – Mary II was born (d. 1694) 👑 Mary II was Queen of England, Scotland, & Ireland, co-reigning with her husband, King William III & II, from 1689 until her death from smallpox at the age of 32. Mary was the eldest daughter of James, Duke of York (the future James II of England), & his first wife Anne Hyde. Mary & her sister Anne were raised as Anglicans at the behest of their uncle, King Charles II, although their parents both converted to Roman Catholicism. Charles lacked legitimate children, making Mary second in the line of succession. She married her first cousin, William of Orange, a Protestant, in 1677. Mary was devoted to her husband, but he was often away on campaigns, which led to Mary's family supposing him to be cold & neglectful. Within months of the marriage Mary was pregnant; however, on a visit to her husband at the fortified city of Breda, she suffered a miscarriage, which may have permanently impaired her ability to have children. Further bouts of illness, that may have been miscarriages, occurred in mid-1678, early 1679, & early 1680. Her childlessness would be the greatest source of unhappiness in her life. Charles II died in 1685 & James took the throne, making Mary heir presumptive. James's attempts at rule by decree & the birth of his son from a second marriage, James Francis Edward (later known as "the Old Pretender"), led to his deposition in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 & the adoption of the English Bill of Rights. William & Mary became king & queen regnant. Mary mostly deferred to her husband – a renowned military leader & principal opponent of Louis XIV – when he was in England. She did, however, act alone when William was engaged in military campaigns abroad, proving herself to be a powerful, firm, & effective ruler. Mary's death from smallpox at the age of 32 left William as sole ruler until his death in 1702, when he was succeeded by Mary's sister, Anne. __________

In general this type of strongboxes is considered to be French or Flemish (Franco-Flemish). Nevertheless, the vast majority of these are from England. This one is made during the William and Mary-period (Anglo-Dutch) circa 1680-1700. It's constructed from thick and heavy quarter sawn Oak, straight forward veneered, in a reverse diamond pattern and so called "Oyster cut" veneers in the shape of stylized flowers. Richly ornamented with brass mounts in the shape of leaves and Fleur-de-lis, which have a decorative function, but also prevent the box from damage during long travels. In the centre is a large escutcheon, that can be opened with a secret lever. When the hinged lid is lifted, you'll get access to the main storage space. In the lids are two panels that can be opened. Hidden to the eye there are 11 secret storage spaces in the interior, some with seperate boxes inside! These strongboxes are used to store important documents, gold & silver coins and other small valuables. The earliest evidence for the production of this type of strongboxes comes from the inventory of Edward Traherne, a renowned joiner who died in London in 1675. Traherne’s trading stock contained a number of shipping and traveling chests with various specifications. It may be noted that several of them still had to be finished. English furniture makers advertised with “Strong-Boxes” throughout the first part of the eighteenth century. A typical quality of these boxes are the iron rods that are vertically positioned in the side panels which can be screwed onto the wooden floor of a ship or carriage.
