“De Optimo reip. Statu deque nova insula Utopia” - [‘On the Best Kind of a Commonwealth and About the New Island of Utopia’] - by Sir Thomas More “Utopia” was first published in 1516 and made More’s name across Europe. It describes the fictional island of Utopia (which means “no place” in Greek) as a veiled but bold criticism of contemporary society. Froben issued this edition in Basel in 1518, with woodcut illustrations by Hans Holbein and his brother Ambrosius. This border was designed by Hans. The lively putti, and the curling sheet of paper pinned to the arch, on which the book’s title is apparently printed, are typical of his engaging designs. . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #erasmus #DesideriusErasmus #humanist #froben #reneissanceart #woodcut #thomasmore #sirthomasmore #utopia #thomasmoreutopia #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

further details of Desiderius Erasmus’ portrait - though this is a copy I believe the original might be in London’s National Gallery? From the photos I’ve seen of the original, it is far finer and more detailed and makes this one (which is still amazing) look kind of sad in comparison! Such is Holbein’s skill 😄 Holbein painted Erasmus at least 3 times that we know of. By the mid-1520s, the growth of religious reform in Basel meant that demand for devotional images had greatly reduced, which made up a good portion of Holbein’s work. In August 1526 he set out for England. It is believed he was carrying a letter of introduction from Erasmus to the English lawyer and writer Sir Thomas More, as More confirmed Holbein’s arrival in London in a letter to Erasmus in December 1526, describing the painter’s work as ‘wonderful’ . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #erasmus #DesideriusErasmus #humanist #johannesfroben #froben #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

Erasmus’ New Testament - 1522 Holbein designed this border for Froben in 1521. Made in four sections, it shows the progress of life from youthful Indulgence at the bottom along a steep path through a series of gateways to True Happiness at the top. Along the way, man encounters Virtues and Vices such as Fortune and Avarice. Holbein's border is here used to decorate the title page of Erasmus's translation of the New Testament from Greek into Latin, which was published in 1522. . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #erasmus #DesideriusErasmus #humanist #johannesfroben #froben #reneissanceart #woodcut #newtestament #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

Johannes Froben (by Hans Holbein the Younger) and Desiderius Erasmus (after Holbein) Although they now appear very different, these two works were originally hinged together as a pair. They symbolise the friendship of Erasmus and his Basel publisher Johannes Froben. The portrait of Froben, who faces right, is by Holbein. That of Erasmus is a copy of a painting by Holbein and was probably commissioned by Froben to accompany his portrait. Froben employed Holbein in Basel to design woodcut illustrations for his publications. . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #erasmus #DesideriusErasmus #humanist #johannesfroben #froben #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

As we approach the anniversary of Anne Boleyn’s execution, I wanted to explore how The Tudors were really quite accurate with how they portrayed it. Natalie Dormer is definitely one of the most popular portrayals, and we can see why; she showed her passion, while also highlighting her flaws. Prior to her execution, Anne really did say that she had only a ‘little neck’; including these smaller details helps bring Anne to live on screen. Anne was as Natalie showed her on the scaffold, she kept her composure and, while looking uncertain, gave the speech that The Tudors showed. The executioner saying ‘boy, fetch my sword’ is also accurate. There’s a small niggle of Elizabeth looking a lot older than she actually would’ve been in 1536, but apart from that Destiny and Fortune is a near perfect episode. 📸 The Tudors #tudors #thetudors #tudor #anneboleyn #henryviii #history #historylover #historylovers #historybuff #historygirls #historygeek #like #follow #tudorhistory #toweroflondon #englishhistory #britishhistory #wivesofhenryviii #kinghenryviii

𝙸𝚝'𝚜 𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚑𝚘𝚖𝚎 🏐⚽ Did you know that football was invented during this period? However it isn't football that we know today. There was no VAR decisions or linesmen running up and down the pitch. There was no squad numbers or irritated managers on a touchline. This was a game that involved two rival villages played in a countryside. The two teams would meet and try to get the ball back to their village by any means necessary. This lead to violent clashes between players. Philip Stubbs wrote in his Anatomy of Abuses of 1583: “Sometimes their necks are broken, sometimes their backs, sometimes their legs, sometimes their arms, sometimes one part is thrust out of joint, sometimes the noses gush out with blood.” Authorities were concerned that people shouldn't be wasting time with such a game and it was banned in 1540. . . #JoeMHistorian #tudorhistory #tudor #henryviii #intags #education #writerscommunity #educational #likeforlikes #like4likes #blog #blogger #bloggerstyle #likesforlikesback #followforlike #like4tags #likes #britain #england #football #soccer #premierleague #efl #championship #leagueone #footballer #ronaldo #footy #soccerlife #footballplayer

On the 26th April 1536 Queen Anne Boleyn clearly felt something bad was around the corner, which would turn out to be all too true. On the 26th, she asked her chaplain, Matthew Parker, to meet with her. The queen asked Parker to promise her that he would watch over her young daughter, Elizabeth, if anything bad happened to her. When I was around the age of 10 I started studying the Tudors at school for the first time. Around this time, the film “Anne of the Thousand Days” happened to be on tv one day, and my Mum allowed me to watch it. I was instantly so gripped with Genevieve Bujold’s performance as Anne that it really sparked my passion for Tudor history and in particular Anne Boleyn’s story. For me, Genevieve totally stole the film and remains the greatest Anne Boleyn ever depicted on screen. She is the only actress to play Anne Boleyn to be nominated for an Oscar, which tells us so much. She was just so incredible, and so stunning! Genevieve’s status as a French Canadian also gave her a slightly unusual accent, which actually added to the performance for me. #tudors #tudorengland #tudorhistory #elizabethi #anneboleyn #queenanneboleyn #henryviii #nataliedormer #tudortimes #janeseymour #six #monarchy #kings #royalty #royalhistory #anneofthethousanddays #oscars

𝚂𝚘𝚌𝚒𝚎𝚝𝚢 𝚞𝚗𝚍𝚎𝚛 𝙷𝚎𝚗𝚛𝚢 𝚅𝙸𝙸𝙸. Tudor England was a difficult time to survive for the population of England. White privilege meant that there was a 14 percent chance that your infant wouldn't survive its first year. It also meant that women's life expectancy was shorter than men's due to health complications, especially during and after childbirth. Old age was considered forty years old as life expectancy beyond that wasn't guaranteed. People would starve to death as well as face capital punishment for crimes. King Henry VIII executed between 50,000 to 72,000 people during his reign. With no police force the only deterrent was capital punishment. Thieves were hung and traitors to the Crown were hung drawn and quartered. People would try to escape this by declaring their Christian faith. By declaring they were a member of the clergy, they couldn't be executed. However Henry VIII soon changed this. A person's food intake depended on the harvest that year. If the harvest was poor, people would go hungry. However grain was the main saviour as it provided bread, alcohol and soup. King Henry VIII wanted to create a better society than the one his father had left. His father Henry VII was greedy in his pursuit of money. He left Henry VIII a healthy economy upon his death. Henry used this money to aid Spain with their wars against France. Most people lived in villages however cities grew larger. . . #JoeMHistorian #tudorhistory #tudor #henryviii #intags #education #writerscommunity #educational #likeforlikes #like4likes #blog #blogger #bloggerstyle #likesforlikesback #followforlike #like4tags #likes #britain #england

Desiderius Erasmus - by Quinten Massys Massys painted this portrait of the scholar Erasmus in his study in 1517, after which Erasmus sent it as a token of friendship to Sir Thomas More in London. Erasmus is a very important person in Holbein’s story as his patron and the key to his later success in London. In around 1525 Hans and his elder brother Ambrosius moved to Basel, where Hans would have been introduced to Erasmus. While there they designed book illustrations, stained glass, religious artworks and making portraits of the city’s wealthy citizens. Both became celebrated, but Ambrosius died in 1519 . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #erasmus #DesideriusErasmus #humanist #quintenmassys #thomasmore #ambrosiusholbein #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

The Virgin and Child c. 1510’s This painting is probably the ‘picture of our Lady holding our Lorde at her brest her robe being redd’, recorded at Whitehall Palace in 1542. It is a copy of a work by the celebrated Flemish painter Rogier van der Weyden, and is probably by van der Weyden’s grandson, Goswijn. This is one of the many devotional paintings owned by Henry VIII, of which only a few survive. I’m not particularly religious myself but I found myself in awe of this piece, thinking that King Henry VIII once also gazed at this very painting while at his devotions . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #virginmary #virginandchild #religiousart #devotionalart #jesus #babyjesus #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

What happened after Anne Boleyn’s execution ? 👑Anne was effectively written out of the history books for the rest of Henry VIII’s reign. Her name was literally chiselled out of the fabric of Hampton Court, her badges and heraldry replaced by those of Jane Seymour. 👑Katherine of Aragon’s daughter, Mary I, promoted the view of Anne as a heretical seductress who had destroyed her mother and corrupted her father away from the ‘true religion’ of Roman Catholicism. 👑During the reign of her daughter, Elizabeth I, Anne’s reputation was partly rehabilitated, and a set of portraits created – which may or may not have been based on a lost original likeness – revealing a slender-necked young woman with dark, expressive eyes. 👑At the same time, Anne’s credentials as a pious religious reformer were celebrated, but the question of her moral character left unchallenged: after all, Elizabeth I was the daughter of both Anne and Henry. #anneboleyn #henryviii #elizabeth #boleynsociety #boleyn #churchofengland #thetudors #nataliedormer #tudordynasty #houseoftudor #history #london #toweroflondon #may19 #1536

Anne Boleyn Senses Trouble… 488 years ago today, the 26th of April 1536, Anne Boleyn had a meeting with her chaplain, Matthew Parker. Based on Parker’s recounting of the event, a nervous Anne clearly knew that danger was on the horizon. During this meeting, Anne begged Parker to promise that if anything happened to her, he would help care for her little daughter Elizabeth. A promise which Parker kept for the rest of his life. Two days earlier, a commission to investigate “every kind of” treason “by whomsoever committed” was launched by Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII’s chief minister and chief “Fixer”. If Henry wanted something difficult or horrible done, he sent Cromwell to make it happen. Henry had clearly been courting Jane Seymour, which was now an open secret to pretty much everyone. Anne had also tragically lost her last child in a miscarriage 3 months prior, and Henry was barely speaking to her. She had every reason to be terrified for her safety. And she was right to be. Her shocking arrest would come only 6 days later… I’ve used the 16th century Hever Rose portrait along with one of the contemporary Holbein sketches as a visual guide to create this life-like Anne Boleyn reimagining. #anneboleyn #digitalportrait #henryviii #tudors #16thcentury #royal #history #historynerds #cromwell #wolfhall #tudor #sixthemusical #england #queen #royalty #digitalart

Rochester Castle The first timber castle was built in 1066. It was an effective way for King William I (the Conqueror) to stamp his authority into the town. It was replaced by a stronger stone castle in 1087 by William’s son, King William II (Rufus). The keep displays the wealth of William through the grand designs, decoration and architecture of the iconic Norman style that can be seen all across England and France (or what was Normandy). The castle was also besieged in 1215 by King John, which ended in royal success. It was also a visiting spot for a couple of Tudor kings, with King Henry VII visiting three times during his reign, and was also visited by King Henry VIII in both 1522 (with Emperor Charles V) and 1540 where Henry met his fourth wife Anne of Cleves. So, Rochester is the castle where Anne had accidentally insulted Henry when he and some of his nobles attempted to surprise and charm Anne by disguising himself to see if she would be naturally drawn to him with love at first sight. It is believed that when Henry burst into the room Anne did not recognise him and even may have pushed him out of the way! #book #ilovebooks #книга #книги #bookish #reading #britishbook #hilarymantel #thomascromwell #henryviii #anneboleyn #доведететруповете #tudors #tudorhistory #historicalfiction #historicalfictionbooks #donotmiss

(Repost so I could fix something) It’s a very well known fact that Cardinal Thomas Wolsey built Hampton Court Palace and that he eventually gave it to Henry VIII, but did you know that Catherine of Aragon spent some time there? During the time of Thomas Wolsey, she frequently stayed at the palace as a guest of the Cardinal. She even spent time there after Henry VIII was gifted it in 1527. While Hampton Court is riddled with hidden Easter eggs left by Anne Boleyn, Catherine also left her mark. In the Great Hall, carved above the doorway is the pomegranate, Catherine’s symbol. This leads to another question: why the pomegranate? Why out of all the things did she choose the pomegranate to represent herself? Based on ancient beliefs, such as the Greeks and the Persians, the pomegranate is seen as a symbol of fertility, life and beauty. The ancient Greeks associated the pomegranate with the goddesses, Demeter, Persephone, Aphrodite and Athena. In the Bible the pomegranate is only mentioned once in the Old Testament. It is seen as metaphor for the Promised Land. In Christianity the pomegranate is associated with Christ’s resurrection and the community. At first glance it would seem that Catherine chose the pomegranate to represent fertility and the future she would bring to England, but there might be another more sentimental reason for her choice. The Spanish word for pomegranate is granada. Granada also happens to be the town in which the Alhambra Palace is located. After her parents conquered the city in 1492, Catherine spent quite a bit of time there. Could it be that she wanted a little piece of home to stay with her in her new land? Catherine was a very smart and precocious young lady, so I think she knew and understood the double meaning and that the choice was intentional. What do you think? Check out the carousel for more examples of Catherine’s pomegranate, including one on her sleeve in a stained glass window! **** #catherineofaragon #katherineofaragon #catalinadearagon #hamptoncourtpalace #hamptoncourt #henryviii #anneboleyn #tudorhistory #tudorera #tudorengland #sixwivesofhenryviii #sixteenthcentury #pomegranate

One of the many TV portrayals of Henry VIII known for his many wives, mistresses and a struggle to produce a male heir. He believed he was cursed for having married his brother's wife (Catherine of Aragon, who claimed that her marriage to Arthur hadn't been consummated, therefore she could marry Henry). Their 24-year-long marriage resulted in a single surviving child - daughter Mary, and was annulled on the grounds of failure to result in a male offspring. O tempora, o mores. All of his subsequent marriages weren't much happier, however. 👑 Watercolor on cotton Skechr paper

𝙷𝚎𝚗𝚛𝚢 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝙲𝚊𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚎'𝚜 𝚖𝚊𝚛𝚛𝚒𝚊𝚐𝚎. King Henry VIII declared that it was his father's dying wish to see him married to Catherine of Aragon. If this was true there was no evidence to support it. Henry married Catherine in 1509 at Westminster Abbey. Catherine was delighted and wrote to her father that their time was "spent in continuous festival". In 1510 Catherine gave birth to a still born little girl. In 1511 she gave birth to the son that Henry wanted. He passed away seven weeks later. Catherine gave birth to two still born sons in 1513 and 1515. Catherine then gave birth to their daughter Mary I. A testing time for any relationship however they came out the other side happy with their daughter. King Henry VIII during the early part of the decade had affairs with other women. One of which produced a son in 1519, Henry Fitzroy. Parliament were considering granting him the power to be the legitimate future ruler, however he died in 1536. Henry also had an affair with Mary Boleyn. Mary was a chamber maid of Catherine's. Mary had two children who Henry didn't acknowledge to be his. Mary's sister Anne Boleyn. . . . #JoeMHistorian #tudorhistory #tudor #henryviii #intags #education #writerscommunity #educational #likeforlikes #like4likes #blog #blogger #bloggerstyle #likesforlikesback #followforlike #like4tags #likes #britain #england #thisislondon #londonblogger #livinghistory #londoneye #westlondon #westminster #weekend #friday #read #learn #kids

#anadecleveris #anneofcleves #hansholbein #queen #enriqueviii #henryviii #tudors #seis #sixmusical #exwives #drawing #illustration #design #procreate #blythedoll

May I present to you the fifth wand of the Historical Wand Collection. This wand belonged to Henry VIII of England. After years of research , looking through documents of Catharina Parr (last wife of Henry), we were able to locate it. Hidden in the walls of Whitehall, wrapped in fur and bounded with gold chains ( not sure if this was for protection) We also find some old scrolls containing powerful charm spells .. The wand itself is in good condition despite its age, The base is made of English oak it has three different styles Twisted, square, and natural.. maybe because Henry VIII had a temper.. his mood changed from happy to angry in seconds. The red porcelain handle is covered with pearls and gold ornaments. The gilde rings on the top ( not confirmed) representative his six wives.
