On this day in 1946, in Culver City, California, the first of two prototype XF-11 photographic reconnaissance airplanes took flight. In the cockpit was Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. During flight, a hydraulic fluid leak caused the rear propeller of the right engine to go into reverse pitch. Hughes maintained full power on the right engine but reduced power on the left, attempting to limit adverse yaw to the right side. Unable to make it back to Culver City, Hughes attempted to land at the Los Angeles Country Club, however the airplane crashed into three houses in Beverly Hills, California. The fire destroyed the prototype and one of the houses and heavily damaged the others. Howard Hughes was seriously injured in the crash. A second XF-11 was completed and flew in April 1947, again with Hughes in the cockpit. Quattro anni fa scrivevo questo sulla finale di XF vinta da Licitra. Il tempo, come spesso accade, mi ha dato ragione. Data 15/12/2017 Una cosa la voglio mettere in chiaro, prima di scrivere il mio Pippone sulla finale di #xf11. Nessuno ha mai messo in dubbio le qualità vocali di Lorenzo, che ha ampiamente dimostrato ieri sera, incantando il pubblico presente, e a casa. Nessuno ha mai messo in dubbio la dolcezza e l’orecchiabilità dell’inedito di Nigiotti, e il suo essere così meravigliosamente cantautorale e livornese. Era una finale, e tutti i presenti meritavano di esserci, assente immeritata Camille Cabaltera, fatta fuori per strategia e non certo per mancanza di voce o talento. Io contesto che non sia stata data la vittoria al gruppo che più di tutti ha avuto il coraggio di osare, di portare una ventata di freschezza e sensualità su quel cazzo di palco. Contesto che non sia stata data la vittoria ad un gruppo che in quattro non fanno l’età di mio padre, ma in quanto a talento potrebbero essere i miei nonni. Contesto che venga scritto che chi ama i Maneskin vede solo il bel faccino di Damiano e non senta la sua voce graffiante. Contesto che venga scritto che i quattro ragazzini siano degli esaltati, pipparoli e pariolini, riflettenti una società di giovani privi di ideali e umiltà. The XF-11 was a twin-engine, twin-boom, all-metal monoplane with a pressurized cockpit and tricycle landing gear. The first prototype featured a pair of four-bladed contra-rotating propellers.
