Today we celebrate National Veteran's Day in Finland. National Veterans’ Day is observed in Finland each year on 27 April, the day the Lapland War ended in 1945. There are still almost 2,000 living war veterans in Finland and the average age of the remaining veterans is 99. Czechia has a new Roma Holocaust memorial in Lety 📍 👉 Due to communist neglect, the site of a former concentration camp originally served as a pig farm and it took close to three decades for the state to buy out the property and erect a dignified memorial in its place. 🌳 A competition was announced in 2018. The studio selected for the task was Terra Florida which proposed a simple design involving a circle with the names of all the victims, a “path of remembrance” and a visitor centre with a permanent exhibition that presents testimonies of survivors in audiovisual form. ◾️ Over 1,300 Roma passed through the camp’s gates between 1942 and 1943 never to come out. More than 300 of them died there, mostly women and children. On 26 April 1944, 2nd Lt. Donald J. Schaefer and his nine crew members departed the Thurleigh airfield on a mission to drop information leaflets over Brunswick, Germany. Shortly after the Boeing B-17 took off, it experienced an engine fire. The airplane crashed about a mile from the airfield. Donald Schaefer, Floyd Henry, Willard Transeth, Roy McKinney, Charles Weller, Sheldon Kinberg, John Simons, John Byred, and Ron Minter were killed. Only George Littlefield, the tail gunner, survived. At the time of the crash, Littlefield was operating the Aldis lamp to warn other aircraft in the area of their position. Fortunately for Littlefield, this was the only part of the plane that was not consumed by the fire. He made a full recovery from his injuries. Littlefield died in 2007. Mary Laws, who bought the field in 1993, became curious about the plot of land where her children discovered pieces of metal and then a live bullet. She had wondered about the indentation in the ground, but the findings caused her to investigate the historical record. She learned the site had been the scene of a horrific crash, and the crew, except one individual, had perished. After conducting significant research relative to the event, Mary became determined to honor the crew. She was instrumental in raising funds necessary to create a lasting memorial to those who died and the single survivor of the crash. Over the past 30 years, Mary has continued to pick up small pieces of the plane, and she frequently contemplated the life and death of each member of the Donald Schaefer crew. In August 2022, a small contingent of the 306th Bomb Group Historical Association traveled to Thurleigh to take part in a ceremony denoting the 80th anniversary of the "friendly invasion" by the USAAF. Among the group were three descendants of crew member Floyd Henry, who participated in the service for the dedication and unveiling of the memorial. After a short church service of remembrance at St. Mary’s Church in Bletsoe, the American travelers and Bletsoe villagers moved to the churchyard where George Curtin, Mary Devine, and Michael Collins honored their uncle by unveiling the commemorative memorial.

The Second Battle of Tannenberg, occurring during World War II, was a significant clash between German and Soviet forces on the Eastern Front. Taking place from January 5 to January 22, 1945, near the town of Tannenberg in East Prussia (now Poland), it was part of the larger Soviet East Prussian Offensive aimed at pushing German forces out of the region. By early 1945, the Eastern Front had shifted dramatically in favor of the Soviet Union, with German forces in retreat and facing immense pressure from the advancing Red Army. The Second Battle of Tannenberg unfolded as part of the Soviet winter offensive, which aimed to encircle and eliminate German forces in East Prussia. The battle saw fierce fighting in harsh winter conditions, with both sides enduring freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall. The Soviet forces, under the command of Marshal Georgy Zhukov, launched a massive assault on the German defensive positions, employing overwhelming numerical superiority and powerful artillery barrages. Despite fierce resistance from the German defenders, led by General Otto Lasch, the Soviet forces succeeded in breaking through the German lines and encircling several German divisions. The battle devolved into brutal close-quarters combat as the Soviet troops fought to root out the remaining pockets of resistance. Ultimately, the Second Battle of Tannenberg resulted in a decisive victory for the Soviet Union. The German defenders suffered heavy casualties and were forced to retreat further westward, abandoning East Prussia to the advancing Red Army. Lately it seems as if Guy Ritchie is releasing movies like his life depends on it. His latest film here highlights some of the ways his trademark style can breathe energy into a story, but also how his scripts can sometimes overwrite themselves. When this movie acts as a historical drama, it’s merely serviceable. The fundamental plot points are clear but some of the details can get blurred into a convoluted mess. When this movie embraces itself as a mindless action flick, however, it is a ton of fun. Ritchie’s witty dialogue compliments the unapologetic violence perfectly. The entire cast delivers in their respective performances. Henry Cavill is obviously the most notable as the leading character, but Eiza González is deserving of recognition for stealing scenes with an effortless charm. I do think this is a solid movie that’s on par for Guy Ritchie’s brand, but unfortunately I don’t think there’s much that makes this stand out as special from the director’s already deep filmography. It’s one of those movies where if you’re interested, you should see it. The battleship served with the British Home Fleet in the early months of 1944, deployed to the Far East Fleet of the British Royal Navy, for operations against Imperial Japanese forces in the Indian Ocean. __ The Free France Forces ⬇️⬇️ __ For Educational and historical purposes only __ Such actions included several bombardment operations and in May 1945, the ship was present during the Battle of the Malacca Strait, of May 15th - 16th, which resulted in British destroyers targeting and sinking the IJN Myōkō-class heavy cruiser, Haguro, at the Strait of Malacca. __ [That Japanese ship] had been sailing as a supply vessel for Japanese garrisons in the occupied-Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and sailed near the Bay of Bengal in April 1945. The battleship Richelieu, was too far away to engage the Japanese ships and cruiser. __ In the years after the end of the Second World War with the unconditional surrender of the remnants of the Imperial Japanese Empire to the Allied Powers in Tokyo Bay on September 2nd, 1945, that the French battleship Richelieu took part in the French-Indochina conflict (off the coast of today’s Vietnam) in the period of December 1945. __ That was as part of the initial effort to restore France’s overseas colonial rule in Indochina, that large conflict ended on August 1st, 1954, it was one of numerous conflicts which continued in the Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam regions through the 1960s to 1980s. #🇫🇷TheHistoryofFranceGaulToRepublic ⬇️⬇️ @raven_military_historian

🇬🇧🇺🇸 ~ 🇫🇷 • Free French Naval Forces, Richelieu-class battleship, lead ship of her class: Richelieu, of the Western Allied Powers, c. 1943 - 1945. The battleship served with the British Home Fleet in the early months of 1944, deployed to the Far East Fleet of the British Royal Navy, for operations against Imperial Japanese forces in the Indian Ocean. __ The Free France Forces ⬇️⬇️ __ For Educational and historical purposes only __ Such actions included several bombardment operations and in May 1945, the ship was present during the Battle of the Malacca Strait, of May 15th - 16th, which resulted in British destroyers targeting and sinking the IJN Myōkō-class heavy cruiser, Haguro, at the Strait of Malacca. __ [That Japanese ship] had been sailing as a supply vessel for Japanese garrisons in the occupied-Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and sailed near the Bay of Bengal in April 1945. The battleship Richelieu, was too far away to engage the Japanese ships and cruiser. __ In the years after the end of the Second World War with the unconditional surrender of the remnants of the Imperial Japanese Empire to the Allied Powers in Tokyo Bay on September 2nd, 1945, that the French battleship Richelieu took part in the French-Indochina conflict (off the coast of today’s Vietnam) in the period of December 1945. __ That was as part of the initial effort to restore France’s overseas colonial rule in Indochina, that large conflict ended on August 1st, 1954, it was one of numerous conflicts which continued in the Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam regions through the 1960s to 1980s. #🇫🇷TheHistoryofFranceGaulToRepublic ⬇️⬇️ @raven_military_historian

Obviously, since we have a C-60, we're huge Lockheed fans, which makes April 26 a big day, because three important Lockheed firsts happened #OTD: The Lockheed X-7 (dubbed the "Flying Stove Pipe") unmanned test bed for ramjet engines and missile guidance technology first flew on this date in 1951. It was the basis for the later #Lockheed AQM-60 #Kingfisher, and the engine geometry looked very similar to the engines that wound up on... ...the Lockheed A-12 Oxcart which "accidentally" first flew #OTD in 1962 when Lockheed Chief Test Pilot Lou Schalk took the first Oxcart for a high-speed taxi test. Unbeknownst to most, he had received secret, specific instructions from designer Kelly Johnson to take the craft, known as “Article 121,” airborne. Then in 1970 on this date, the Lockheed L-1011 Tri-Star entered airline service. Eventually, 250 of the widebodies would be built. Only one still flies today, though. Everybody needs a flight jacket. My sheepskin B-3. The B-3 was introduced in the mid-1930s, designed by Leslie Irvin as a heavy outer layer for airmen to wear in altitudes of 25,000 feet. These jackets were seen on air crewmen throughout WWII. Born in south east London in 1914, William (Bill) Henry Price served with the Royal Artillery and was a Light Anti-Aircraft gunner. During D-Day, on the 6th June 1944 Bill was aboard the 5,000-tonne Innerton, one of the first merchant ships to be deliberately holed and sunk during the battle. Bill served as anti-aircraft artillery on the deck of the semi-submerged merchant ship. This was on one of the first merchant ships which created the floating Mulberry Harbour breakwater off Arromanches-les-Bains as part of Operation Overlord. Two years earlier, Great Britain had designed a secret concept of the artificial harbours code named Mulberry ‘B’ the British sector, and Mulberry ‘A’ the American sector. He later served in Belgium and then the Netherlands. He passed away at the age of 103 in 2018. Tomorrow is International Morse Code Day! HRNM staff discovered this WWII U.S. Navy Morse code training aid inside of a donated flat cap. The cap belonged to Edward Curry, a Navy corpsman who was assigned to a Marine unit during WWII. This training card was designed to help Sailors practice Morse code. You can see the code printed on the back of this card. The user can push down on the top edge, moving the interior sheet and creating white stripes that look like a signaling beacon. The mayor of Lemgo, Wilhelm Gräfer, tried to prevent bloodshed by surrendering his town to the advancing American troops of the 2nd Armored Division. However, the local German army commanders did not cooperate and Gräfer was executed for high treason. Lemgo was not bombed during the Second World War, so the historic city center, one of the most beautiful in all of North Rhine-Westphalia, has largely been preserved in its original state.
