For the inaugural exhibition at Sargent’s Daughters new Tribeca location, we are thrilled to invite you to ‘Summer Camp’, an exuberant celebration of Camp aesthetics, curated by Allegra LaViola, Christine Nyce and Sofia Love. This expansive, intergenerational exhibition turns a side-eye towards the trope of the “summer group show,” eschewing its predictability and self-seriousness, and instead inviting twenty artists to have a good time and capture the frenetic, utopian energy of the summer. The artists included in ‘Summer Camp’ all reflect the concept of Camp in their work, whether via the subversion of art-historical tropes, maximalist refutations of good taste, or theatrical aesthetics. They also reflect Susan Sontag’s statement that “Camp taste is a kind of love, a love for human nature.” Sontag also acknowledges that Camp can be a verb, i.e. “to Camp.” So, it is not incorrect to say that Sargent’s Daughters is “going Camping.” Invite your friends. This Was It. 🎤 We close this series with Zaldy's finale jacket which was intended for Michael to wear during “Man In The Mirror". Featured is an unconventional, galactic purple military style jacket with a flared waist, crystal stuffed epaulets & sections across the chest. The jacket features stacked Swarovski crystals sewn within pockets of fabric in varying shapes including round, square & almond with an almost holographic, dimensional effect. There were also crystals hidden within the jackets waistband which would only be glimpsed with certain movements. Michael referred to these as “secret, hidden treasures” which we are sure delighted him. The original design sketch appears to have pockets of the crystals on the elbows & an armband on the right arm which are missing from the final piece. Perhaps these were not added as the elbow sections could have hindered movement & it would have been difficult to find a material/colour of armband that would not clash/detract from the focal points of the jacket (unless perhaps it was stitched in the same material for added texture with a subtle crystal embellishment). MJ did wear a black toile version of this jacket whilst attending costume fitting at The Forum on June 19th in an unfinished state as it was missing the zipper & finishing touches such as the crystals on the collar & shoulders. Overall, this is a stunning piece which allows movement & comfort whilst dazzling & daring audiences to daze deep into the depths of Michael's stacked crystal dimensions. This Was It. 🎤 In an uncharacteristic twist, Zaldy planned for Michael to wear a multicultural military style patchework jacket for his performance of “Heal The World”. This jacket features embroidery from around the world - we see Chinese, Indian, Native American & Arabian inspiration, with “Heal The World” embroidered in Arabic on the right waist. These sections are framed with hand cut, round metal discs which would have clinked & made noise which we are sure MJ would have liked. The cuffs are meant to look like bracelets & have a tribal quality (African/Native American) with opaque coloured seed beads arranged in varying shapes. They are also similar to some bracelets that Randy wore on the “Victory” tour for an unintended throwback. The zip closure on this jacket was at the back which was a common style for Zaldy, however we do not think Michael would have liked this feature, along with the high neck element which collectively would have made him feel claustrophobic & restricted movement. So, whilst this is an incredible design piece & arguably a piece of art in its own right, we think it is unlikely Michael would have worn this, preferring to opt out for a more classic, open style jacket in his usual flattering cut. This Was It. 🎤 Zaldy’s “Dangerous” suit is an impressive example of when change is exciting & needed. It’s the one piece of choreography that Michael explored & updated with each tour, pulling different ideas & interpretations. “This Is It” was no exception with an updated look, choreography & track with samples from “Morphine”, “Heartbreak Hotel” & Hitchcock’s “Psycho”. This 2 piece black suit is what we believe to be merino wool suggested by its subtle sheen. Stunning criss cross lace detailing is heavily applied in an arachnid web like effect whilst the interior is lined in a warning red. This same intricate design was used on lots of the costumes in the MJ One show in Vegas which Zaldy also designed for. Unfortunately, Michael did not wear this suit but we know it would have given him the classic “Dangerous” silhouette with a new & exciting edge. Beneath the suit, would be a peace sign shirt using square crystals which looks like a cross between a tie & a chest brace (see model). Travis Payne had an idea for Michael to arrive on stage dramatically suspended by his ankles in a straight jacket (see design sketch) but this would not have gone ahead as MJ did not have the strength at his age to take part in such a stunt. Also from a practical stand point, he would needed to reach a higher platform first & it was not preempted in the stage design. This Was It. 🎤 We all know that the “Billie Jean” costume is sacred & despite Zaldy’s boundary pushing designs, he was wise to stay true to the original recipe when concocting the look Michael would wear for “This Is It”. Zaldy did not stray from the silhouette & kept the famous thick white socks, tuxedo trousers with side stripes, sequin jacket (featuring smaller, more refined sequins) & of course, the glove. To showcase the performance in a new dimension, Philips OLED technology was used throughout the garments; capable of achieving any RGB colour, combination, pattern, pulse & rhythm. The light up element (reminiscent of the glowing sidewalk from the short film) would begin with the socks before moving upwards to the glove. Each piece worked individually & operated by a remote control which could be programmed to Michael’s choreography. The rainbow feature in particular was his favourite & would be showcased during the moonwalk! 🌈 This was an exciting element for Michael who exclaimed “it’s everything I’ve always wanted” during the fitting. Of course we have seen light up features before with the “Thriller” jackets worn during the “Bad” tour by Whitten, Tompkins & Bush but never before a cohesive light show throughout several pieces which would pulse to the beat & simulate sparkle as Michael danced to his most well known & celebrated record. This Was It. 🎤 At exactly this time 14 years ago, the doors should have opened for the first night of “This Is It”. We are starting the series with this costume set designed by Zaldy that was intended for Michael to wear during “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”. This is the first time Michael would wear pieces which had Swarovski crystals set within lucite moulds (a strong transparent thermoplastic). These were then sewn on top of the fabric (set in line with tiny crystals) as whole individual pieces. The large shoulder sections were Michael’s idea, who was inspired by the raised shoulders on the Balmain pieces he had been wearing. On the final concept sketch you can see this later addition is missing. The t-shirt is cotton with an enlarged version of Miguel Villalobos’ crystal inspired sketch of the MJ O2 arena logo which can also be seen on the labels, tags & insoles of the shoes accompanying these pieces. The outfit would be finished with matching shoes & glasses. This is a powerful opening piece radiating futuristic “other-worldly” vibes. The cost of the crystals alone would have been in the hundreds of thousands without consideration of the craftsmanship to bring it together! Killer Thriller Threads 9/10🪦💀🧟♂️ Brought in by choreographer Travis Payne, Zaldy Goco was missioned to produce a series of concept costume pieces in an attempt to contemporise Michael’s stage-wear. “Thriller” was one of these pieces recreated by Zaldy. This jacket was produced in a red & black patent leather, with no collar & the shoulder quilting replaced by embroidered dripping blood. The lining of the jacket depicts a werewolf biting a Swarovski Crystal which was a hidden touch added just for Michael. This detail would never have been seen by the audience & nor would the jacket, as MJ (adamant on working exclusively with his own designers) requested an alternate redesign from Tompkins & Bush. Zaldy also produced a number of shoes for his various “This Is It” looks. Again, MJ made it very clear that he would be sticking to his trusted Florsheim loafers which had served him well throughout his career. Aesthetically, MJ was a fan of Zaldy’s work, however he feared that whilst visually appealing, the pieces were not designed with vigorous movement & intense choreography in mind. Although, it is possible that Michael would have switched up his looks throughout the 50 planned shows. Its famous pink and white "vichy" check print facade caught the eye of Alaïa, who interpreted the print into oversized, stretch and head-to-toe renditions. Some of the biggest models at the time, walked his Spring 1991 show in these houndstooth and gingham creations. Also @normani , in @iamcardib and @theestallion “WAP” video, makes a surprise cameo in a black and white houndstooth emsamble with matching gloves and a beret. The look was a nod to this collection, which her stylist @kollincarter has been "wanting to do forever," but was given an edgy twist thanks to the custom latex pieces Carter commissioned from @venusprototypelatex2134 , a fashion house in Los Angeles.
