"Beyond The Sea" Chalk pastel on paper April 2009 ~6 ft. × 10 ft. This is one of the last pieces I made before graduating college in May 2009. I worked on it secretly in my garage, with this huge piece of paper taped to the floor & 5 sets of chalk pastels torn through. It was included in my solo BFA exhibit at a tattoo parlor/gallery, & has been rolled up in storage ever since. All my work is based on my own experience, & this one is based on a detail from a painting I'd made several months before. Someone suggested I try this as an exercise, & this is one of several pieces I've made based on previous work. "Beyond The Sea" is about geologic time in the desert where I'm from. Not only are we literally "beyond the sea" geographically in the present-day, this land was previously, several times throughout history, a sea-bed. This piece asks us to look beyond the sea, beyond the place where we are, the moments we're in, & consider geologic time. What was this place, what is it now, & what will it be? 15 years later, I still consider these questions daily. 📍This artwork was inspired by & created on the homelands of the Chiricahua & Mescalero Apache, and the Piro-Manso-Tiwa peoples. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #artwork #originalart #drawing #painting #pastel #chalkpastel #draw #color #contemporaryart #fineart #southwestart #desertart #arte #kunst #landscapeart #landscapedrawing #abstract #abstraction #abstractart #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #lascrucesart #lascrucesartist #megfreyermuth #visualart #visualartist #supportlivingartists

"Where Did I Go?" March 2009 Oil on canvas 42" × 60" Currently displayed at Crossroads Acupuncture. Available to purchase; SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE!!!!! I made this painting 15 years ago in my final semester in college. It was springtime, I was obsessed with greens & blues, and I was limiting my color palette in new ways. It was one of my most prolific times creatively, and I still can't believe how much I accomplished in just a couple months. But it's looking at this piece that really transports me. Lately, I can't get this painting & its title out of my head. I keep asking myself the title question, which is somehow less annoying than when I'm asked "where have you been" or "what have you been up to"... these are not bad questions but they bother me because I don't know how to answer them. For one, surely nobody wants to know my honest answer so I stumble with what to say. I've been.... gardening? I've been maintaining. I've been grieving. I've been struggling. But the where? It feels like I haven't gone anywhere at all, but....I have been here. Isn't that what matters? That we're still here? So, where did I go? Right here, which feels like nowhere--A stream in a forest in the mountains in my mind. 📍This image was inspired by the homelands of the Cherokee, Muscogee, and S'atsoyaha (Yuchi) peoples. . . . . . . . #art #artist #artwork #originalart #paint #painting #painter #oilpaint #oilpainting #landscapepainting #landscapepainter #landscapepaintingnow #arte #kunst #contemporaryartist #contemporaryart #fineart #professionalartist #womanartist #newmexicoartist #lascrucesartist #greatsmokymountains #forestart #instaart #artoftheday #megfreyermuth #supportlivingartists #buyartfromartists #visualart #visualartist

"Where Dreams Are Born" Oil on canvas January 2019 18" × 30" Available, SERIOUS INQUIRES ONLY please! This painting depicts mountains called the "Rough 'n' Ready Hills" in the Sierra de Las Uvas region of Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. I took the photograph that inspired this piece in 2017, when I arrived at this location and it reminded me of a place in some of my recurring dreams. This spot inspires me so much, and I hope this piece can inspire others to follow their dreams. Happy New Year, may your dreams come true! 📍This painting was inspired by & created on the homelands of the Indigenous peoples known today as the Chiricahua Apache, Mescalero Apache & Piro-Manso-Tiwa. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #paint #painter #artwork #fineart #oilpainting #originalart #landscapeart #landscapepainting #landscapepaintingnow #contemporaryart #southwestart #borderartist #borderlands #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #newmexicotrue #nmtrue #lascrucesartist #lascrucesart #arte #kunst #megfreyermuth #buyartfromartists #supportlivingartists #visualart #visualartist

"Mountain Bed -- North Carolina" Charcoal on paper March 2010 22" × 30" Available; DM for more info, serious inquiries only please! In early 2010, I made a series of five drawings based on photos I'd taken from moving cars while traveling somewhere in the US. This one was from a trip in December 2005 to the South; it was my first & only time to most of the states between Louisiana and North Carolina. I was amazed at the difference in the forests there from the ones I'm used to in the West. The inspiration for this image, taken near Great Smoky Mountains National Park, gave me a peaceful feeling. This drawing reminds me of the cozy days around the winter holidays, when you just wanna curl up in a blanket & dream about the forest. Wishing a Happy Winter Solstice to all, and although it might seem far away lately, hoping for peace around the world. 🕊 📍This image was inspired by the homelands of the Cherokee, Muscogee, and S'atsoyaha (Yuchi) peoples. . . . . . . . #art #artist #artwork #originalart #draw #drawing #drawn #charcoalart #blackandwhite #landscape #landscapeart #fineart #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #travelart #mountains #forest #forestart #visualart #visualartist #instaart #artoftheday #northcarolina #greatsmokymountains #newmexicoartist #buyart #buyartfromartists #supportlivingartists #megfreyermuth

"Never Lost" Oil on paper 8"×10" February 2016 SOLD This painting was inspired by my quest to find a canyon's entrance in a location where the general public is not allowed. The original title, "Blissful, Never Lost" plays with place names in the area, & alludes to my attitude while finding this spot. However, making this painting made me feel like some things should stay hidden, or lost, at least for me. The title is ultimately a lie, even though it's true that I rarely feel geographically lost....this place is lost to me as my desire to find it has waned. This is one of my favorite pieces from this era of my work, & it's off to its new home this week. Two of my favorite persons & top collectors added this to their amazing home collection. Art makes such a great gift, whether for yourself or someone else. "Half Light" Watercolor on paper 5"×7" April 2019 Now showing at La Mecha Contemporary in El Paso, TX! This is the third piece I have showing in La Mecha Contemporary's juried show for small artworks under $200. These pieces are still available, along with several others by 12 other artists. The gallery is open 12-5 every Saturday, but this Saturday December 9th, there will be an evening holiday market at this location so they'll be open until 10pm. Come out! The events at this space are really fun. Can't come out but still want to buy art? Check out the link in my bio! This piece was made in spring but it definitely has a wintery feel to me. I love evening moments like this, when the sun sets & the light gets low, causing unexpected colors to pop out in the half light. 📍This piece was made on + depicts the homelands of the peoples known today as the Mescalero Apache, Chiricahua Apache & Piro-Manso-Tiwa. . . . . . . . #art #artist #artwork #originalart #watercolor #watercolorart #watercolorpainting #arte #kunst #landscapeart #landscapepainting #borderartist #fineart #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #desertart #southwestart #newmexicoart #newmexico #newmexicoartist #newmexicotrue #landofenchantment #nmtrue #megfreyermuth #lascrucesartist #lascrucesart #buyartfromartists #supportlivingartists #visualart #visualartist

Here is a moment I witnessed after a hike one evening at Tortugas Mountain, one of my favorite hiking spots. I started this piece in my vehicle & finished it at home later. This drawing is featured in the Small Work art show, opening at La Mecha Contemporary in El Paso, Texas, this Thursday November 30, 2023 from 6-9pm. "It's Later Than You Think" Oil on wood March 2017 5.25" × 10" Showing at La Mecha Contemporary in El Paso, TX from 11/30-12/23 I'm excited to announce that I'll have 3 pieces in a juried group show in El Paso, TX, featuring small affordable artworks from 13 artists. This will be my first ever showing in El Paso! I go to El Paso often for art events & it's one of my favorite cities so I'm very excited to be showing there. The opening event will be a lot of fun with food & drinks & live music & affordable art to buy, come out this Thursday 11/30 from 6-9pm!! I hope to see you there. This is one of the pieces that got into the show, a small oil painting of Picacho mountain, near Las Cruces. I made several paintings of Picacho during this time, and this one was from memory. It depicts a hazy day here, during one of those moments where you can't really tell what time it is but surely it is later than you think. 📍This painting was inspired by & created on the homelands of the Indigenous peoples known today as the Chiricahua Apache, Mescalero Apache & Piro-Manso-Tiwa. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #paint #painter #artwork #fineart #oilpainting #originalart #landscapeart #landscapepainting #contemporaryart #southwestart #borderartist #borderlands #frontera #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #newmexicotrue #nmtrue #lascrucesartist #lascrucesart #arte #kunst #megfreyermuth #supportartists #supportlivingartists #visualartist #visualart

"Unmarked Graves" Oil on canvas 60" × 90" | 6 30" panels January - April 2009 Available to purchase; very serious inquiries only please! Currently showing at Crossroads Acupuncture in Las Cruces, NM. It's been a while since I've shared this piece, which I made during my last months in college. I'd made a 5'×25' piece the previous semester which depicted the Organ Mountains & ended with a white-thorn acacia tree, but at some point while making that piece, one of the tree's branches was broken in a storm. This piece takes a closer look at that tree--after the branch broke--& its changes from winter to spring. The bird & nest were actually there; the bird appeared every time I went to sketch & take notes on-site. The horizon line in the background was intentionally set on the top edges of the bottom pieces to create extra tension; in the last panel, a portion of the Potrillo Mountains can be seen to the west. I worked on it 2 pieces at a time--top + bottom--from left to right over several months. While I made sketches of the tree, I thought about all the life & death that had occurred just in this area; the title + imagery refer to the history of life here, intended as a recognition + celebration of the life cycle. I recently re-installed this piece at Crossroads, & it's now located in a more visible area. I've been showing my work with Crossroads Acupuncture for almost 10 years & thru several moves. It's important to me to know that my work helps people as they receive necessary therapies + treatments. It falls in line with my belief that art helps us heal, & I'm grateful to Crossroads for displaying my work. 📍This painting was inspired by & created on the lands of the Indigenous peoples known today as the Chiricahua Apache, Mescalero Apache, & the Piro-Manso-Tiwa peoples. . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #paint #painter #artwork #oilpaint #oilpainting #originalart #borderartist #southwestart #landscape #landscapepainting #arte #kunst #fineart #contemporaryart #nmtrue #newmexicotrue #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #lascruces #lascrucesart #lascrucesartist #megfreyermuth #visualartist #visualart #buyartfromartists #supportlivingartists

"An Hour Is Like Water (Kaho'olawe + Molokini)" 3 of 3 Watercolor on paper ~ 3½" × 7½" January 6, 2017 Kaho'olawe Island + little Molokini from Kamaole Beach Park 1 in Kīhei, Maui. SWIPE ↔️ to see all 3 pieces together! Full triptych is 8" × 27½" framed & available to purchase; serious inquiries only please! 30% of proceeds go to Maui fire survivors ❤ This the 3rd piece in my triptych painting from Kam 1 in Kīhei. It shows the uninhabited Kaho'olawe Island with the crescent-shaped islet Molikini. The islands shown in this full triptych were once all one island--along with Maui & Moloka'i--called Maui Nui. It was a real honor to be able to paint these beautiful islands from this location. Some of my earliest beach, ocean & family memories are from this place. On each trip to Maui, I've been able to come here with family & we've always had the best time, including this past summer when we stayed nearby for a family reunion. Just looking at these islands will always remind me of all the love + joy I've felt when looking at this view, and I hope to share that with others by making pieces like this one. 📍This painting was made on & depicts the homelands of the Kānaka Maoli, or Hawaiian people. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #visualart #visualartist #paint #painter #painting #watercolor #watercolorart #watercolorpainting #triptych #pleinairpainting #pleinairpainter #arte #kunst #artwork #originalart #sunset #sunsetpainting #seascape #hawaii #hawaiiart #maui #mauiart #megfreyermuth #supportartists #supportlivingartists #instaart #artoftheday #artistsoninstagram

"An Hour Is Like Water (sun)" 2 of 3 Watercolor on paper ~ 3½" × 7½" January 6, 2017 Sunset from Kamaole Beach Park 1 in Kīhei, Maui. This painting shows the setting sun as seen from Kam 1, next to a boat that was anchored & stuck there at the time. Although this piece is numbered second in this triptych, I actually worked on & finished it last. When compared to the other 2 pieces in this series, the use of color shows that the sunset was further along when I made this piece. The hour flowed by quickly, but I still had time to document how much light and color can change in just one hour. 📍This painting was made on & depicts the homeland of the Kānaka Maoli, or Hawaiian people. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #artwork #originalart #watercolor #watercolorart #watercolorpainting #painting #paint #painter #pleinair #pleinairpainting #pleinairpainter #enpleinair #seascape #arte #kunst #instaart #artoftheday #artistsoninstagram #sunset #sunsetpainting #megfreyermuth #hawaiiart #hawaii #mauiart #maui #supportlivingartists #visualart #visualartist

"An Hour Is Like Water (Lāna'i)" 1 of 3 Watercolor on paper ~ 3½" × 7½" January 6, 2017 Lāna'i Island before sunset, from Kamaole Beach Park 1 in Kīhei, Maui. During my 2016-17 Maui visit, one of my last opportunities to paint came during a trip to "Kam 1" Beach Park with my uncle. He played beach volleyball there every week, so I tagged along a few times. Since I don't play much volleyball, I'd usually head out to the beachfront for a bit to sketch and paint. This evening, I had enough time--about an hour--to work on 3 paintings, which I ended up putting together as one piece later on. Keep a lookout for the other 2 pieces this week 👀 . . 📍This painting was made on & depicts the homeland of the Kānaka Maoli, or Hawaiian people. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #watercolor #watercolorart #watercolorpainting #instaart #artoftheday #artistsoninstagram #painting #paint #painter #pleinair #pleinairpainting #pleinairpainter #enpleinair #arte #kunst #artwork #originalart #lanai #seascape #hawaii #hawaiiart #maui #mauiart #megfreyermuth #supportartists #supportlivingartists #visualartist #visualart

"West Maui from Ho'okipa" Watercolor on paper December 23, 2016 7½" × 11" Find it now at the link in my bio! 30% of proceeds going to Maui fire survivors. This is my personal favorite of the paintings I made during my 2016-17 stay on Maui. I remember finally feeling at ease painting the ocean as I made this piece, "catching a wave" in the only way I know how. This piece shows West Maui--covered in clouds as usual--from Ho'okipa Beach Park on the North Shore. On the right is Kahakuloa Head, and in the foreground on the bottom left is a little more information on where I was sitting: an elevated area of green grass on top of red-brown soil. I've been told this section of Ho'okipa is the site of an old heiau, or Hawaiian ceremonial/spiritual site. I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to make so many paintings at this special location. 📍This painting was made on & depicts the homeland of the Hawaiian people, or Kānaka Maoli. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #artwork #originalart #watercolor #watercolorart #watercolorpainting #painting #paint #painter #pleinair #pleinairpainting #pleinairpainter #enpleinair #instaart #artoftheday #artistsoninstagram #seascape #landscape #arte #kunst #megfreyermuth #hawaiiart #hawaii #mauiart #maui #supportartists #supportlivingartists #visualartist #visualart

****UPDATE: This piece has been SOLD**** "The Witching Hour" Charcoal on paper February 2015 ~16"×20" / Framed Available, DM for more info! This dark piece is from my 2015 series "Into The Woods". All the pieces in this series were made with charcoal during the winter. Normally I get really sad about the cold & lessened sunlight in winter but working on this series was a way for me to cope with the changing seasons & face my fears about change. This drawing shows the last light of day--what I call "the witching hour"--peaking through clouds & the skeleton of a pecan tree. The west mesa over-looking the valley where I live is seen in the bottom quarter of the image. This image still gives me chills, but it also helps me accept reality. 📍This drawing was created on & depicts the homeland of the Chiricahua & Mescalero Apache, and the Piro-Manso-Tiwa peoples. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #draw #drawing #originalart #artwork #charcoaldrawing #charcoalart #blackandwhite #contemporaryart #landofenchantment #southwestart #arte #kunst #landscapeart #landscapedrawing #fineart #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #lascruces #lascrucesart #lascrucesartist #megfreyermuth #visualart #visualartist #tree #supportlivingartists #supportartists

"East of Soco" Watercolor on paper May 09, 2018 4" × 6" Available now at link in bio! I painted this in the back of my dad's car on our way to visit my Gramma for her 102nd birthday. She was incredible, and I tried to visit for all of her birthdays since our birthdays were just a few days apart. The last few visits, I made some paintings en route since I wasn't driving, & I consider these to be "plein air" paintings--even though they weren't technically painted "in the open air" they were still made from directly observing a particular place in time. The part of the drive in this painting from my hometown to Albuquerque is particularly beautiful, looking east of Socorro (aka Soco), towards the Oscura Mountains (aka Oscuras). 📍This painting was made on & depicts the homelands of the following Indigenous peoples: Pueblo, Mescalero Apache, Chiricahua Apache, Piro, Tampachoa (Mansos), Tigua (Tiwa), Jumanos, and the Piro-Manso-Tiwa peoples. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #paint #painter #originalart #artwork #visualartist #visualart #southwestart #watercolor #watercolorpainting #landscapepainting #landscapepainter #pleinair #pleinairpainting #artistsoninstagram #artoftheday #arte #kunst #aquarelle #creative #megfreyermuth #nmtrue #newmexicotrue #newmexico #newmexicoartist #newmexicoart #lascrucesartist #supportlivingartists

****UPDATE: This piece has been SOLD**** "Kahakuloa" Watercolor on paper January 05, 2017 5 ¾" × 7 ½" Available at link in bio, 30% of proceeds going to Maui fire survivors ❤ Here is another watercolor I painted from Maui's North Shore in 2016-17. Looking at this series reminds me of how it feels to be there during different types of weather & different times of day. This image feels like the clear but windy mornings--I can feel the trade winds moving through this piece. A few days before I painted this, historic rainstorms turned Maui gray & dark for days with mudslides shutting down roads; and a few days after I made this, the Kona winds brought in a lot of vog causing unsettling haze to distort the views I'd gotten used to. That experience taught me to appreciate these clearer days. I'm so grateful I made these paintings, they help me remember what I've learned from Maui so that I can share it with others. 📍This image was made on & depicts the homeland of the Kānaka Maoli, aka the Hawaiian people. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #originalart #artwork #watercolor #watercolorpainting #painting #paint #painter #enpleinair #pleinair #pleinairpainting #pleinairpainter #artsy #arte #kunst #instagood #instaart #artoftheday #artistsoninstagram #contemporaryartist #megfreyermuth #supportlivingartists #supportartists #visualart #visualartist #hawaiiart #hawaii #mauiart #mauiart

" 'Iao Valley, Late Afternoon " Watercolor on paper December 27, 2016 6¼" × 11" Available now, link in bio! Here is another plein air watercolor painting from my 2016-17 series of Maui paintings. On this day, I made 2 paintings focused on 'Iao Valley & West Maui, studying how the sun would shine through the clouds & into the valley. At this time, 'Iao Valley was closed to visitors after intense flooding from a few months before. I got to go there in 2002, 2011, & again this year, but in 2016, making these paintings was my only way of visiting the valley. I sat at the same spot for almost every painting in this series to better understand this amazing island through careful & repeated observations. I hope others can see these and gain some understanding & care for this place as well. This image is also featured on my Maui greeting cards (link in bio!). 30% of proceeds from my Maui originals & 50% of greeting cards proceeds are going to Maui fire survivors. 📍This image was made on and depicts the homeland of the Kānaka Maoli, aka the Hawaiian people. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #originalart #artwork #watercolor #watercolorpainting #painting #paint #painter #artsy #pleinair #pleinairpainting #pleinairpainter #contemporaryart #arte #kunst #instagood #instaart #artoftheday #artistsoninstagram #womanartist #hawaiiart #hawaii #mauiart #maui #megfreyermuth #supportlivingartists #supportartists #visualart #visualartist

This image is also featured in my Maui greeting card series, again at the Shop link in bio! This piece was painted en plein air at Sugar Cove on the North Shore of Maui, while I watched my cousin and some of his friends surf. It was such a relaxing spot for the afternoon, the light was perfect and the water was a calm green. This piece may be small but it holds so much love & care, and it holds a large space in my memories of Maui. *UPDATE: This piece has been SOLD* "Haleakalā from Kahului Harbor" Watercolor on paper May 2019, 4"×6" Available to purchase at the shop link in my bio ☝🏼 30% of proceeds going to Maui fire survivors ❤ This painting is based off a photo I took in December 2016 while watching one of my Maui cousins surf in a competition at Kahului Harbor. I was excited not only to see my cousin surf but also to see a nice view of Haleakalā without any clouds covering it. I took a lot of photos since I couldn't paint while we were there, & I got around to painting this years later. It's a bit shiny because I made it with some shimmery watercolors, so it changes depending on lighting & angles. It has been 4 weeks now since the devastating Maui fires. Every one of my Maui family members know people who lost everything. Maui is a tight-knit community. There are several families & individuals I'd like to donate to with proceeds from sales. Maui people are the kindest most generous people I've ever met & I have to give back to them. 30% of proceeds from my Maui originals, & 10% of all other proceeds, will go to Maui fire victims. More coming soon. 📍This image depicts the large dormant volcano of East Maui,--called Haleakalā which means "house of the sun"--in the homelands of the Kānaka Maoli, or Hawaiian people. . . . . . . . #art #artist #artwork #originalart #watercolor #watercolorpainting #watercolorart #paint #painter #painting #arte #kunst #instaart #instagood #artoftheday #artistsoninstagram #instaartist #artsy #megfreyermuth #buyartfromartists #supportlivingartists #maui #mauiart #hawaii #hawaiiart #artheals #haleakala #supportmaui #visualart #visualartist

"Christmas Ho'okipa Rainbow" Watercolor on paper 12/27/2016, 4"×6" Original NOT AVAILABLE to purchase; Greeting cards available at link in bio! It has been just over 3 weeks since the tragic Maui fires. I have struggled with what I can do to help while also trying to balance my business. Prior to the fires, I was planning to share & sell some of my Maui paintings as well as make new ones. So I am moving forward with that plan & will be donating a portion of all proceeds to Maui fire survivors. While I grapple with the grief we're all going through, I wanted to share a bit of the Aloha in this piece. This painting is based on a photo I took early Christmas morning 2016 at Ho'okipa Beach Park. I was walking my uncle's dog before meeting up with family for the day, & the beach was abnormally quiet. There were maybe 3 other people there & I don't think I saw a single surfer in the water. Then this perfect rainbow formed over the ocean. It was a really special moment for me & I'm glad I made this piece so I can share this moment with others. This beach is an important place for my family & me; I have memories of coming here ever since my first visit to Maui at 6 years old. In 2016 I made a number of paintings on Maui--most of them from this beach--while I stayed with my family for 5 weeks. I will be making some of these paintings available in my shop & highlighting them here. This image is part of a new series of greeting cards. A portion of proceeds from ALL SALES STARTING NOW will go to helping Maui fire survivors. People will need assistance for years so through my connections on Maui, I hope to help any way I can. But for today, I know that art heals & helps us process what we've been through. "Voggy Sunset" Watercolor on paper January 2017 ~11"×14", Framed Available to purchase, serious inquiries only please! ***30% of proceeds going to Maui fire survivors*** I painted this "en plein air" on January 9, 2017, from the west end of Ho'okipa Beach Park on Maui, Hawai'i. This was my main painting spot while I lived here with my family for 5 weeks in 2016-17. On this evening, a lot of vog (volcano smog) had rolled in from the Big Island, creating odd sights at sunset, like this moment when part of the West Maui mountains appeared to morph into a cloud while pink light streamed through 'Iao Valley. Vog can create visual interest, but it also causes unhealthy air quality. My mom & her 3 sisters grew up in Hawai'i, & I have a lot of family there. Going to Hawai'i is a special experience for most people, but it holds a lot of importance for me; everytime I go I feel closer to my maternal grandparents, whom I never got to know. I also get to spend time with my wonderful family in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. I love these islands as if they were my home, & on every trip I learn more to help me show respect for this place & its people. These are the homelands of the Hawaiian people or Kānaka Maoli. After a recent visit, I hope to make more pieces about Hawai'i, & share them here soon. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #originalart #watercolor #painting #paint #painter #watercolorpainting #artwork #pleinair #pleinairpainting #pleinairpainter #enpleinair #arte #kunst #instagood #instaart #artoftheday #artistsoninstagram #hawaiiart #hawaii #mauiart #maui #megfreyermuth #supportlivingartists #supportartists #visualart #visualartist

"The Scars + The Tree" Charcoal on paper March 2016 Available to purchase, serious inquiries only please. This is the third piece of Sugarloaf Peak in the Organ Mountains from my time as first Artist-In-Residence for Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. Although I didn't finish this piece until a few months after my residency, it shows a common practice during my residency: zooming in on all the mountain peaks through binoculars. When I glassed in on Sugarloaf, it had all these lines and marks that I'd never noticed and I can only describe as scars & depressions. There was also a large tree growing out the northwest side of it. What looked like a smooth granite protrusion from far away was actually full of texture and life. We could apply this image to ourselves metaphorically in many ways... it's just one way the land we live in teaches us about ourselves. 📍The following Indigenous groups have ancestral & cultural ties to this land: Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Tortugas Pueblo, Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe of San Juan de Guadalupe Pueblo, Comanche Tribe, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Isleta Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Navajo Nation, Tesuque Pueblo, Zuni Pueblo, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #draw #drawing #originalart #artwork #charcoaldrawing #blackandwhite #contemporaryartist #landofenchantment #southwestart #arte #kunst #landscapeart #artistinresidence #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #organmountains #lascrucesart #lascrucesartist #megfreyermuth #visualart #visualartist #buyartfromartists #supportlivingartists

"Fish Out Of Water" Oil on canvas September 2015 10"×10" image size, 12"×12" framed Available to purchase; SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE! During my time as the first Artist-In-Residence (AIR) for Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument (OMDPNM), I became fascinated with Sugarloaf Peak on the east side of the Organs. It can't be seen from the west & the city where I live, so it's appearance is exciting whenever I go east. It started to look like a shark or fish to me, stuck in the land forever. I related to the idea of a "fish out of water": I was living in my home in the city during my residency, but commuting everyday to the mountains to paint, draw & learn more about this place, a place I always thought I knew. I began feeling more a part of the rocks & clouds & plants than the urban environment. But I also felt like an intruder in nature--the animals made their presence known to me, and it wasn't always welcoming. It was the most humbling & incredible experience, and I'm forever grateful to have had the opportunity. The AIR program is such a gift for artists, our community, and this place. Come see some work from each OMDPNM AIR since September 2015, at the NMSU Museum in Kent Hall. The exhibit will be up through 2023, and it includes this piece. 📍The following Indigenous groups have ancestral & cultural ties to this land: Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Tortugas Pueblo, Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe of San Juan de Guadalupe Pueblo, Comanche Tribe, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Isleta Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Navajo Nation, Tesuque Pueblo, Zuni Pueblo, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #paint #painter #originalart #artwork #oilpainting #pleinairpainting #southwestart #pleinair #landscapepainting #landscapepainter #pleinairpainter #artistinresidence #arte #kunst #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #newmexicotrue #organmountains #lascrucesartist #lascrucesart #megfreyermuth #supportlivingartists #buyartfromartists #visualartist #visualart

"Sugarloaf Peak" September 2015 Charcoal on paper, Framed Image size: ~10.5" × 12.25" Frame size: ~17" × 18.5" Available to purchase, serious inquiries only please! This drawing is one of three pieces I made about Sugarloaf Peak in the Organ Mountains, during my time as the first Artist-In-Residence for Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument (OMDPNM). I made several drawings focused on different peaks in the monument, and I wanted them to capture the mood & personality of these mountain peaks. Some people write this off as mere personification, but for me it helps me connect with & understand these places to ascribe some sentience to them. It's done out of respect, and I hope that my work helps others feel respect for these places too. 📍The following Indigenous groups have ancestral & cultural ties to this land: Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Tortugas Pueblo, Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe of San Juan de Guadalupe Pueblo, Comanche Tribe, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Isleta Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Navajo Nation, Tesuque Pueblo, Zuni Pueblo, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #draw #drawing #originalart #artwork #charcoaldrawing #charcoalart #blackandwhite #contemporaryart #landofenchantment #southwestart #arte #kunst #landscapeartist #landscapedrawing #artistinresidence #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #organmountains #lascrucesartist #megfreyermuth #visualart #visualartist #buyartfromartists #supportlivingartist

"The Wizard's Home" September 2015 Oil on canvas, 10"×14" Created as "demo" piece during my time as first Artist-In-Residence (AIR) for Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument (OMDPNM), and donated to Friends of OMDPNM. This piece will soon be on public display for an indefinite amount of time! Friends of OMDPNM have partnered with NMSU Museum to publicly display donated artworks from all Artists In Residence for OMDPNM. A reception will be held on April 14th from 5:30-7pm at NMSU Museum (Kent Hall), following a panel discussion from 4pm-5:30 with Zuni Pueblo elders about their connection to this place. I'm so grateful to everyone who's helped put this together. The AIR program is such an important way to promote & celebrate the intersection of public lands & the arts. This painting depicts the view near Dripping Springs Visitor Center, looking toward what's known as Baldy Peak (in back) and the area called Dripping Springs (tucked into the blue rock center & behind the green hill in foreground), named for the natural springs occurring there. I used to have recurring dreams of venturing up to the springs and visiting a wizard there, which is where the title comes from. It also refers to the fantastical aesthetic of the painting, and the fantasies we project onto nature. "Fog Towers" Charcoal on panel March 2015 8"×10" Available to purchase at the link in my bio ☝🏼 I made this piece as a reminder of what helps Coastal Redwoods survive: moist air from the Pacific Ocean, often in the form of fog. But recent reports of torrential rains causing trees to fall and the inconsistency of fogs are very concerning for the survival of these trees. The effects of human-caused climate change are here, and we must confront how this change will affect species that help us survive, like these beautiful giants. It's all a reminder of why I made this piece: to document what I've seen in our time, and to remember that these trees have stood tall in the fog for centuries.... but will it always stay this way? 📍This image depicts the homelands of ther peoples today known as the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and the Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #originalart #artwork #draw #drawing #arte #kunst #artista #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #landscapeart #landscapeartist #landscapedrawing #forestdrawing #environmentalart #redwoods #coastalredwoods #trees #california #californiaart #visualart #visualartist #megfreyermuth #buyartfromartists #supportartists #supportlivingartists

This was the first of 3 small paintings I made of Magdalena Peak during my time as the first Artist-In-Residence for Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument in September 2015. "Giants' Dripping Leaves" Charcoal on panel March 2015 8"×10" Now available to purchase at the link in my bio ☝🏼 In 2014, I went on a solo road trip across the Western US. After living on the Oregon Coast for almost a month in the middle of my journey, I leisurely headed home down the West Coast and through the land of the giant Coastal Redwoods. As a young child, I got to experience the Giant Sequoias of central California, but I had never experienced the foggy mysteries of the Coastal Redwoods. When I happened upon the location depicted here, I was breathless and in tears. Every time I see images of this place, I wish to be back amongst these beautiful giants, in what is truly one of the most special places on Earth. 📍This image depicts the homelands of ther peoples today known as the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and the Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #originalart #artwork #draw #drawing #arte #kunst #artista #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #landscapeart #landscapeartist #landscapedrawing #forestdrawing #environmentalart #redwoods #coastalredwoods #trees #california #californiaart #visualart #visualartist #megfreyermuth #buyartfromartists #supportartists #supportlivingartists

"Paper Tiger" March 2010 Charcoal on paper 22" × 30" Available to purchase; serious inquiries only please. Prints available in the Sale prints at the link in my bio. The weather this week reminded me of this drawing, which is 1 of 5 in the first series of drawings I made after graduating from college. The monsoon rains that sustain my desert home start to thin out with the quick approach of autumn, so I try to savor any bits of rain sent my way or any hope that more will come. As someone who is obsessed with growing food & flowers but lives in the desert, rainfall is a fleeting lifeline. A dark thunderhead seemingly approaching from a distance can be hopeful yet agonizing: will it come and water my garden? Will it bring us any temporary relief from drought? Or will it dissipate before getting to where I am? 📍This piece depicts the homeland & unceded territory of the Indigenous peoples known today the Chiricahua Apache. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #drawing #draw #artwork #originalart #visualart #visualartist #charcoal #charcoaldrawing #arte #kunst #landscapeart #landscapedrawing #environmentalart #southwestart #contemporaryart #borderartist #blackandwhite #thunderstorm #borderlands #nmtrue #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #lascrucesartist #megfreyermuth #artforsale #buyartfromartists #supportlivingartists

"Burros 4: Chivas" Oil on panel, ~9"×17" March 2014 Currently showing at Full Circle Health Center in Las Cruces, NM. Available to purchase--serious inquiries only please! With the recent monsoon rains across New Mexico, I've been thinking about how green stands out in the desert, & how much those of us from dry places really appreciate this color when it starts to come out during monsoon seasons. Shared here is another painting out of the four Burro Mountains pieces from my 2014 series "Scenes From The Gila". It depicts a line of trees near the Gila River, with those in the foreground appearing younger & some trees in back looking older, maybe even dead. Meanwhile the sky is overcast & the trees' depths are quite ominous: I wanted to capture a mood of contrast in the desert even when things appear lush. This whole series was about playing around with New Mexico's legends and connecting them to what I've seen & experienced in the Gila Wilderness. The title of this piece actually references Billy The Kid & one of his many nicknames: Chivato, or little goat aka kid, Billy goat, etc. The young trees reminded me of him, and even felt to me like a good hideout for an outlaw, thus the red on the trees: his first alleged murders were in this area, in fact.. or is it just a legend? 📍This piece depicts the homeland & unceded territory of the Indigenous peoples known today as the Pueblos and the Chiricahua Apache. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #artwork #originalart #paint #painting #painter #oilpaint #oilpainting #environmentalart #landscapepainting #landscapepainter #landscapepaintingnow #arte #kunst #contemporaryartist #contemporaryart #southwestart #nmtrue #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #lascrucesartist #gilanationalforest #bosque #megfreyermuth #supportlivingartists #buyartfromartists #visualart #visualartist

****UPDATE: This piece has been SOLD**** "Burros 2: Blood On The Tracks" Oil on panel, 12"×16" March 2014 Currently showing at Full Circle Health Center in Las Cruces, NM. Available to purchase, serious inquiries only please. This was my 2nd painting out of 4 about the Burro Mountains in the southern Gila National Forest from my 2014 series "Scenes From The Gila". The Burros are very important mountains ecologically for southern New Mexico. This is the northernmost migration spot for several bird species, and the mountains contain a beautiful portion of the Gila River, which is undammed & free-flowing in all of New Mexico. This is also an important cultural area, and many people whose families have lived here for generations still hunt & fish in these mountains. It is one of my favorite areas of New Mexico. The title for this piece alludes to the train tracks in the foreground as well as the violence that has occurred on & to these lands: a pink area at the foot of the mountains is a reference to one of several large mines in the area. I focused on the Burros so much in my series because the health of this place is vital to our health, and I hope these pieces can help encourage us to care for these lands into the future. 📍This piece depicts the homelands & unceded territories of the Indigenous peoples known today as the Pueblos and the Chiricahua Apache. . . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #artwork #originalart #paint #painting #painter #oilpaint #oilpainting #environmentalart #landscapepainting #landscapepainter #landscapepaintingnow #arte #kunst #contemporaryartist #contemporaryart #southwestart #nmtrue #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #lascrucesartist #gilanationalforest #burromountains #megfreyermuth #supportlivingartists #buyartfromartists #visualart #visualartist

"Dry Rio Bed" Oil on canvas March 2008 30"×60" SOLD Lately, there has been a lot of discussion about the Rio Grande (aka Rio Bravo) drying up in portions near Albuquerque & other central New Mexico communities. But for those of us who live south of several dams in southern NM--including communities in West Texas & northwestern México--it can be a bit appalling to hear the shock about a drying river that we know has been damaged for far too long. Here, where we've experienced a dry river for more than half the year annually for decades, we know what happens when a free-flowing river is taken for granted, then damaged due to mismanagement & neglect. I hope that those in shock in northern New Mexico can learn from the reality those of us to the south have been living with for decades. I also hope this discussion can help those of us in the south speak out & do more about a century of ecological damage to our poor river. I made this piece in college, depicting the dry river bed near Mesilla, NM. It was the 3rd piece in my first series exploring landscapes & nature. I secretly called it my Flag Series because I saw the scenes as my personal flags: symbols for the places that make me who I am. A dry river bed is one of those symbols. 📍This image was inspired by & created on the stolen lands of the Indigenous peoples that today we call the Chiricahua Apache, Mescalero Apache, and the Piro-Manso-Tiwa peoples. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #paint #painter #oilpaint #oilpainting #originalart #artwork #visualartist #visualart #landscapepaintingnow #landscapepainting #landscapepainter #arte #kunst #contemporaryartist #contemporaryart #southwestart #environmentalart #nmtrue #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #riogrande #riobravo #lascrucesartist #megfreyermuth #supportlivingartists #buyartfromartists

"Don't Just Stare At It" Oil on paper, 8"×10" August 2017 Currently showing at Full Circle Health Center in Las Cruces, NM. Available to purchase, serious inquiries only please. Here is another painting from the summer of 2017 where I explored the relationship between the sun and one of my favorite mountains, named Picacho. I actually started this series in 2016 after Prince died. I kept thinking about how one achieves their ambitions while I became obsessed with the sun, in awe of it daily while it beat down on me through the desert heat. The title of this piece comes off as a joke, but it was a real thing I told myself: don't just stare at things, paint them. Tell your story about them. I hope you all are finding your ways to tell your stories because what you experience and observe matters, and sharing it with the world makes a difference. Oh, and don't stare at the sun! 📍This image was inspired by & created on the stolen lands of the Indigenous peoples that today we call the Chiricahua Apache, Mescalero Apache, and the Piro-Manso-Tiwa peoples. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #paint #painter #artwork #oilpaint #oilpainting #originalart #landscapepaintingnow #landscapepainting #landscapepainter #arte #kunst #contemporaryartist #contemporaryart #southwestart #nmtrue #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #lascruces #lascrucesart #lascrucesartist #megfreyermuth #sunsetpainting #supportlivingartists #buyartfromartists #visualartist #visualart

"Everything Is Falling Apart" Oil on paper, 8"×10" August 2017 SOLD In the summer of 2017, my region was getting a good amount of summer rains. We didn't have wildfires nearby, but by August we were experiencing fire-smoke from far-away: states like Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and California were having horrible fires. From thousands of miles away, I felt the results in my lungs and I witnessed intense sunsets where fire-smoke created strange light, spreading its fingers across the horizon & tinting the sun red-orange. This painting was part of a series I made about one of my favorite mountains--called Picacho--and its relation to the sun throughout summer. In this piece, I wanted to show the eerie beauty of a sunset tinted by fire smoke, with lush green scenery in the foreground. The contrast and scene is beautiful, but the title should hint at the underlying sadness inspiring the image. At the time, it felt like an omen for me: in following months, I did feel like things were falling apart, but the reality is they only got better by the end of the year--the pain of this moment didn't last for me, but it did teach me a lot. This piece was sold this week; after many potential buyers strung me along about it, one smart person bought it swiftly without giving me a hard time. "I Dream Of Cottonwoods" Oil on panel, 12"×16" January 2016 SOLD: Commissioned by The Johnsons I made this piece in 2016, as commissioned by The Johnsons. It mimics a previous painting I made that they liked, instead depicting the Organ Mountains as seen from their old home with an imaginary cottonwood in the foreground. Several months back, this piece showed up on an estate sale. I wasn't too happy about it, but it was much worse to find out that Mr. Johnson had passed away last year. As uncomfortable as the re-sale process makes me, I can't do much about it. I'm still glad I made the piece, & I'm so grateful the Johnsons found me and trusted me to make this for them. I'm glad they could enjoy it, even if 5 years is a short amount of time. I actually have a lot of trouble completing commissions--especially lately with my artist's block--so I should probably be more concerned about that than the fate of sold pieces... there are certainly bigger things to worry about. If you'd like to get your own original piece, please check out the link in my bio for a variety of available art pieces! "Baldy's Flow" Oil on linen, 12"×12" September 2015 Created under the first Artist-In-Residence program for Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument SOLD Happy 8th anniversary to our beautiful Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument! The creation of this monument forever changed my life, and has been a huge asset to my community. As the first Artist-In-Residence for this monument, I will always advocate for the environmental & cultural importance of these lands, and the preservation of the wildlife depending on them. This painting was made during that residency in 2015, and it shows so-called Baldy Peak and La Cueva rocks in the Organ Mountains. I took some liberty with depiction of the rocks flowing down from the peak, alluding to the volcanic activity that created the mountains--a reminder of all that happened before we got here. 📍This painting depicts land of ancestral & cultural importance for the following Indigenous peoples: Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Tortugas Pueblo, Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe of San Juan de Guadalupe Pueblo, Piro Pueblo de Las Cruces, Comanche Tribe, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Isleta Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Chiricahua Apache Tribe, Navajo Nation, Tesuque Pueblo, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma. "Ponderosa" Oil on canvas, 40"×56" April 2014 Currently showing at Crossroads Acupuncture in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Available to purchase, serious inquiries only please. In 2014, I made a series of paintings based on my experiences in the Gila National Forest. This forest includes the first designated wilderness in the US--the Gila Wilderness--as well as the Aldo Leopold Wilderness, depicted in this painting. The tall pine trees in the foreground of the painting are Ponderosa pines, which are a key species in our forests. I love being amongst them; they smell amazing & their branches seem to wander out randomly from their trunk, creating beautiful shapes & patterns. Today, I can smell these trees burning from inside my home, & all I can think about are the forest fires currently plaguing my state. I live in a valley somewhat far from these forests, but not far enough to escape the effects of these fires. If I were to go right now to the location this painting is based on, there would be large smoke plumes billowing out where the painting depicts a thunderstorm raining down. It is believed that the conifers currently burning in at least 4 different New Mexico forests will not be able to come back--at least not in our lifetime--due to climate change; it will be too hot for these forests to re-grow. While I'm grateful I've experienced these forests and could record them in some way, I am mourning their destruction, which has been caused by our infatuation with fossil fuels. We must do something NOW. We can't afford to lose all these places and species like the ponderosa. 📍This painting depicts the homelands & unceded territory of the Indigenous peoples that today we call the Chiricahua or San Carlos Apache, and the Warm Springs Apache. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #paint #oilpainting #originalart #artwork #oilpaint #landscape #landscapepainting #landscapepainter #professionalartist #contemporaryart #arte #kunst #landscapepaintingnow #climatechange #southwestart #nmtrue #newmexico #newmexicoart #newmexicoartist #lascrucesartist #visualartist #visualart #megfreyermuth #supportlivingartists #ponderosa #forest #gilanationalforest

"It Still Beats" Colored pencil on paper February 2015 8"×8" Copyright Meg G Freyermuth 2015 SOLD I made this piece in 2015, intended for a product label but due to a disagreement about IP rights, the piece never made it on the label. It all worked out though: I had the piece framed, put it in a solo show, and gave it the name "It Still Beats", both a reference to the life of the piece as well as the land depicted in it. The piece sold almost immediately, to someone who was going through difficult life changes & really connected to the vibrant message of this image. I ended up making more money on the piece, & bringing a much-needed lift to someone's life. I've been referencing this image to help finish some new work in progress, especially since I've felt stuck in a rut... Sometimes I think nobody cares, so it helps when I can look back at something I've made & remember the joy my work has brought to others. 📍This piece depicts land of ancestral & cultural importance for the following Indigenous peoples: Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Tortugas Pueblo, Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe of San Juan de Guadalupe Pueblo, Comanche Tribe, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Isleta Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Navajo Nation, Tesuque Pueblo, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma. "Leap: It is unchanging yet trembles sweetly" Oil on canvas, 10 panels 5' × 25' August - November 2008 Dedicated to those who've passed away in the Organ Mountains. Currently on loan at the Doña Ana County Government Center. The month of March marks the anniversary for this piece being on public display in my county building. Three years are left under the current loan period; have you seen it yet? Swipe to see all ten pieces more closely. When a friend passed away in these mountains in 2006, I never looked at them the same way again. My respect for this place only grew, & this piece was my first attempt at digging into what this place really means. I have too much to say about this piece, so I'll just leave here the poem for the piece, one line per panel (and no, there isn't a typo): • • No matter how it ends, combed into water + weeds Break your heart, keep hunting there Morning on green fields -- will it stay there always inside the head? We've never seen the simple homeland Seize this nest like prey from a grey distance On the other side, my heart can't wait to meat you I'm not (t)here--brooding--I'm gone It's about twilight now in the stream On this emptiness floats a child's play of vacillating colors No matter how it starts, this is the back of the uncultivated mind--our idea of paradise. • • • • 📍This piece depicts the stolen lands of the Indigenous peoples known today as the Chiricahua Apache & Mescalero Apache, & the Piro-Manso-Tiwa peoples. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #paint #painter #paintings #artwork #oilpaint #oilpainting #originalart #arte #kunst #landscapeart #landscapepainting #landscapepainter #landscapepaintingnow #contemporarypainting #contemporaryart #fineart #publicart #OrganMountains #NewMexico #nmarts #NewMexicoart #NewMexicoartist #LasCrucesart #lascrucespublicart #megfreyermuth #visualart #visualartist

"Phlox triovulata" Prismacolor pencil on paper May 2019 5"×5" Now available to purchase at the link in my bio! Here's another delicate spring flower that grows in the mountains where I live, although I've only seen it when we've had enough winter precipitation; our desert really needs more rain for our spring flower bloom! I made this drawing in 2019 after being surprised by this flower along the trail. I love how it peeks out of the tangled pattern of grasses and its own leaves. 📍This piece depicts Phlox triovulata in its native habitat on the unceded homelands of the Mescalero and Chiricahua Apache, and the Piro-Manso-Tiwa peoples. "Safety Blankets" Oil on canvas, 30"×30" January 2019 Available to purchase; serious inquiries only please. Currently showing at Full Circle Health Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico. This piece was inspired by a late 2015 snow in Las Cruces. The silver & gold colors reflecting off the fresh snow on the Organ Mountains at sunset reminded me of the safety blankets I'd seen on TV, wrapped around refugees coming from Syria, Sudan & many other places, places we still see refugees from today. Snow is cold yet insulating, and it helps our ecosystems survive; in New Mexico, we need several good snow packs every year for the health of our plants, wildlife, water sources, & ourselves. With our climate changing & snow events seeming to decrease while also getting more intense, I worry about the loss of security in the ecosystems we are a part of... and I can't stop thinking about safety blankets. 📍This painting depicts land of ancestral & cultural importance for the following Indigenous peoples: Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Tortugas Pueblo, Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe of San Juan de Guadalupe Pueblo, Piro Pueblo de Las Cruces, Comanche Tribe, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Isleta Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Chiricahua Apache Tribe, Navajo Nation, Tesuque Pueblo, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma. Here are detail images of some small kitchen cabinets I recently painted for a dear friend. After a bad storm in July ripped off part of his roof, he had to remodel which included new kitchen cabinets. As an avid arts supporter, he wanted to employ local artists to paint each cabinet door; I picked the two small center cabinets at the top. He asked us to just paint the centers so each art piece would have its own frame, so my panels were about 4" × 7". I painted sunset views featuring prominent mountains in our region, in a way that shows how they line up in reality. I worked from reference photos I took at Tortugas Mtn, looking N-NW towards Magdalena Peak (aka Mesa Azul) and the Robledo Mtns on the left panel (photo 1), and the Doña Ana Mtns (aka the DA's, with the faint Goat Mtn in front, photo 2) on the right. Photos 3&4 are the outline drawings I made before painting; photos 5&6 are sketches I made in my sketchbook before working on the cabinets; and photos 7&8 are different angles of each finished cabinet, showing how the paint changes in different light since I used acrylic paint and inks, some of which are pearlescent. I wanted to include the sketch images here to show how much work goes into a project like this. They came out really cool, and I'm honored to be part of this beautiful kitchen art collection! I've got a bunch of projects in the works, and new items coming into my shop this week; check the link in my bio for what's available! It's been an energetic start to the year for me & my art, and I'm feeling better about where I'm at than I have in a long time. My new year's season was blessed by the sales of several originals, to a few new collectors as well as previous ones. This piece was sold on New Year's Day. It is a painting I made in May 2019, while traveling to Albuquerque to see my Gramma for her 103rd birthday, and to celebrate my own birthday. It depicts the "San Andres Mountains from I-25" (this is also the title of the piece), and was made with Japanese traditional paints on postcard-sized paper at 4"×6". Thank you all for your support over the past year, in whatever form, and please check the link in my bio to see what's available to purchase! 📍This painting was made on and depicts the unceded homelands sacred to and stolen from the Indigenous peoples known today as the Mescalero Apache, Chiricahua Apache, Piro, Tampachoa (Mansos), and the Piro-Manso-Tiwa peoples. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #paint #watercolorpainting #originalart #artwork #watercolor #landscapepainting #landscapepainter #contemporaryart #arte #kunst #landscapepaintingnow #creative #southwestart #pleinair #nmtrue #newmexicoartist #lascrucesartist #visualartist #newmexico #aquarelle #newmexicoart #megfreyermuth #lascrucesart #smallbusiness #buyartfromartists #supportlivingartists #visualart

"La Mujer Dorada" Oil on canvas, January 2019 30" × 30" Currently showing at Full Circle Health Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico. For sale; serious inquiries only please! Last Friday, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland declared a ban on a derogatory term that was given to hundreds of sites on federal public lands, a term especially offensive to the people these lands were stolen from. I will not repeat this word, but this painting is of a mountain that was named this awful term. I learned about it having this name when I was studying maps of Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument during my time as its first Artist-In-Residence in 2015. Since this time, I've tried to raise awareness in my community & through my art about this mountain needing a new name. The title for this piece came out of my personal brainstorming on what I could call it in the meantime. However, I hope that a community process centered on the desires of local Indigenous groups will help us find a new name for this mountain. It is not the most prominent peak of the Organ Mountains, but it is an important landmark for all who treasure this area. It never deserved to have such a disgraceful name. 📍This painting was made on and depicts land of ancestral & cultural importance for the following Indigenous peoples: Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Tortugas Pueblo, Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe of San Juan de Guadalupe Pueblo, Piro Pueblo de Las Cruces, Comanche Tribe, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Isleta Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Navajo Nation, Tesuque Pueblo, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma. "See the Sea" Watercolor on paper July 5, 2017 4" × 6" SOLD Painted "en plein air" at the top of the so-called Sleeping Lady Hills in Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. This painting has been on my mind lately; I had this feeling that someone would buy it soon and then last week, someone did! I made this on July 5, 2017, when I went out to explore an area of our national monument called the Sleeping Lady Hills. I climbed to the top and the view to the northwest reminded me of the ocean--the seabeds that were once here on this land as well as the Pacific Ocean that I'd recently visited. I felt like I could see them, just within grasp of the view I was looking at towards Las Uvas, another mountain range in our monument. I made this painting from my perch on top of the "hills" and it was a very happy moment for me. Pronghorn travel across these arid plains now but it still looks like the sea to me. There are always plenty of affordable prints and originals to purchase in my online shop! Check out what's available at the link in my bio; new items coming soon!! 📍This piece was made on and depicts land that holds ancestral & cultural importance for the following Indigenous peoples: Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Tortugas Pueblo, Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe of San Juan de Guadalupe Pueblo, Comanche Tribe, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Isleta Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Navajo Nation, Tesuque Pueblo, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma. "Ocotillo | Fouquieria splendens" Watercolor on paper April 2019 8"×10", Archivally framed Available to purchase at the link in my bio. ****UPDATE: This piece has been SOLD**** Did you know that April is now Native Plants Month in the US? My city & county also designated this week as Native Plants Week. But for me, just like every day is Earth Day, every day is about native plants! This painting depicts a cluster of flower buds at the end of one branch of a desert plant called Ocotillo, with mountains called the Doña Anas seen in the background. Most of the time, this plant looks like a large shrub of long sticks covered in thorns, but every April, regardless of rainfall, they put out these beautiful clusters of red flowers at the end of each branch! Deep green leaves tend to come with the rains, but I'm always amazed at how many desert plants will bloom even in years of drought. However, with the onslaught of climate change, as temperatures in my desert home get hotter and drier, I worry how these plants will be affected. Native plants make life here bearable and enjoyable; they sustain many creatures like hummingbirds, insects and bats; and we can't live without them. We should all work every day to protect the special species native to the ecosystems we inhabit. 📍The following Indigenous peoples have ancestral & cultural ties to this land: Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Tortugas Pueblo, Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe of San Juan de Guadalupe Pueblo, Comanche Tribe, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Isleta Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Navajo Nation, Tesuque Pueblo, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma. I used to go down to the river in the wintertime and paint with watercolors until the sun set. The winter light, color and sunsets in the desert are always incredible to behold. I made several diptych scenes with watercolor on paper during the early months of 2010, and this is one of them, showing Picacho and the Robledos from the dry riverbed of the Rio Grande near Mesilla. I sold or gave away most of the watercolors from this time, and I'm now realizing that I don't even remember what I named many of these pieces! This one is simply labeled as watercolor 14 in my files. Maybe someday I'll find a list of titles for these pieces, but I'm grateful to still have their images and the memory of making them. And maybe soon I'll get back out to the river to paint. While this piece is not available to purchase, I have plenty of originals and prints available at the link in my bio! "Fast Car" Oil on paper October 2017 Framed, ~ 11.5"×13.5" Copyright Meg G Freyermuth. Available to purchase at the link in my bio! I made this painting 3 years ago as part of a series focused on my observations of the sun and the moon. This particular moment of the sun with Picacho was inspired by a sunset from June 2016, when one of my best friends had just gotten a new-to-him fast car and we went for a drive to get a better view of the wild sunset that evening. "Happy Birthday (PTNM)" Oil on canvas April 2018 30"×70" Copyright Meg G Freyermuth Original for sale; DM for info. Limited edition signed prints available at the link in my bio! 👆🏼 I made this piece in 2018 around the 9th birthday of Prehistoric Trackways National Monument. I was volunteering to help map motorized vehicle trails within this monument at the time. When it was time for us to explore this canyon (Branson Canyon) and the less-used Rocotillo Rapids trail, I was so excited. We had looked down into the canyon from above one day and knew it would be an amazing place. This painting depicts one of the sites we came across where I felt the intensity of this beautiful desert monument and its brightly colored rocks. Seeing the roots of thirsty shrubs reaching down this bright, colorful rock ledge for the rare passing of water really hypnotized me. I couldn't get this place out of my head. Making this painting was also a healing process after losing a dear friend. There is so much love put into this piece. Flowers always help me feel better. This is a pen drawing I made last year, of a bouquet of Tithonia rotundifolia (Mexican sunflowers, orange), Dieteria canescens (one of the many purple asters), and Verbesina encelioides (cowpen daisies, yellow) from my garden. The Tithonia is the only one I planted, in the first year I lived in my current home; they all come up on their own each year, and provide much needed food and habitats for birds, bees, butterflies and much more. 📍This drawing was created on the unceded territory of the Indigenous peoples that today we call the Mescalero Apache, and the Manso people. . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #drawing #draw #artwork #originalart #penart #arte #Asteraceae #flowerart #botanicalart #nativeplants #bouquet #NewMexico #NewMexicoartist #visualart #illustration #visualartist #floralart #professionalartist #contemporaryart #kunst #southwestart #NewMexicoart #megfreyermuth #supportartists #artforsale #buyart #linkinbio #september

This site had us taking photos before our soak, and then about an hour later, a huge storm passed over us, bringing wind, hail and heavy rain. It was a beautiful evening. I made this watercolor a few weeks later, and I have been so pleased with this piece that I had to get it framed. It is framed in a rustic black wood frame with a white mat and UV protective glass. I made this small watercolor of the half moon last week. It was so orange every night as it approached the horizon. I have seen the sun look the same color as it sets. We might splendor at these sights and colors, but for me it's really quite unsettling because I know that the effect is largely due to fires in the west. It may provide some inspiration for image-making, but I don't want to lose sight of WHY we are witnessing these phenomena. How do you witness climate change, everyday? We are all witnesses to our home going through destructive changes daily, and not all of it is quick and flashy like fire... this is happening now and has been happening since before most of us were born. Our reliance on fossil fuels and unsustainable resource extraction has displaced people from their homes; polluted air, soil and water; warmed the planet; and destroyed habitat for plants and wildlife, for over a century. Five years ago today, I got up extra early to set up my easel and painting supplies off a dirt road called Microwave Drive to create these two paintings, during my time as the first Artist-In-Residence for Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. A few other artists had joined me, but after the light changed in an hour, they left; I stayed until noon. When plein air painting, I don't always finish a piece on site. Every piece I make takes a different amount of time and requires a different process to achieve the result I desire. Swipe to see how these pieces looked after that first outdoor session on September 7, 2015. Both of these pieces have been sold. The first ("El Picacho con Órganos", 10"×10") now lives in the DC area, and the second ("La Doña Ana", 12"×12") lives near DFW. ****UPDATE: This piece has been SOLD**** "Blissful + Never Lost" Oil on paper, ~8"×10" February 2016 Southern Organ Mountains Framed and available to purchase; link in bio! The photo this piece was based on was taken about five years ago, during an excursion with a friend to find the entrance to Long Canyon (which some have also called Lost Canyon). It is risky to traverse this area of the mountains as it is technically closed to the public. The title of this piece is a play on names for the area, but it is also a lie, (similar to the white lie that "ignorance is bliss" which it isn't). At the time, I often felt like I could explore these mountains and never get lost. But that's a very dangerous and arrogant mindset to have. Also at the time, I was preparing to be the first Artist-In-Residence for Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. It was this experience that humbled me even more towards these mountains and the beings who call them home. By the end of it, I was actually very depressed and felt quite lost. I wanted to stay in the mountains forever even though I knew I was an intruder on other creatures' homes. But being in the city and around too many people felt uncomfortable for a long time. When I finally painted this piece a few months later, I wanted to highlight the illusion of enchantment with the unknown, while alluding to the treachery of this colonial mindset. 📍The following peoples have ancestral/cultural ties to this land: Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Tortugas Pueblo, Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe of San Juan de Guadalupe Pueblo, Comanche Tribe, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Isleta Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Navajo Nation, Tesuque Pueblo, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma. . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #paint #painter #oilpainting #originalart #artwork #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #professionalartist #landscapeart #landscapepainting #landscapepainter #OrganMountains #NewMexico #newmexicotrue #NewMexicoart #NewMexicoartist #LasCrucesartist #LasCruces #southwestart #megfreyermuth #supportartists #artforsale #buyart #linkinbio #visualartist #stolenland #visualart

*UPDATE: This piece has been SOLD "La Puerta Negra" Ink, pen and chalk on paper March 2018, 4"×5" When I hear the song I named this piece after, I hear the anguish of two countries and their people violently forced apart. The traumas committed on this land and to this land have gone on for generations, but what I've witnessed here & learned about this place in my short life is an increasing violence and a painful separation of communities that I love. The trauma baked into this place is a result of white supremacy and the abhorrent policies of two governments working together to profit from oppression. Murdered & missing women & girls, migrating people forced to live in squalor, a constant "drug war", land blasted & degraded & eroded for the sake of increased militarization & industrialization & separation & racism...these acts of violence are interconnected just as the communities separated by the border are intertwined, no matter how many oppressive barriers are put up. The abuses of women & migrants & the land/environment all have the same source,... y la luche sigue--the fight for justice, community and peace continues. This image is loosely based off Mt. Cristo Rey, which sits on the US-Mexico border where Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico meet. I have made numerous sketches of this mountain, taking notes on the scars of the land and the stories they tell. I have observed it ever since I was a child, longing for it to be free from the violence committed there. As we enter the Fourth of July weekend, I have nothing to celebrate about a country that was built on abuse, and perpetuates this abuse daily. 📍This land is the territory of the following Indigenous groups: Jumanos, Chiricahua Apache, Mescalero Apache, and Mansos. Information from native-land.ca; this is your daily reminder that we live on stolen land. . . . . . . . #art #artist #drawing #draw #artwork #originalart #ink #pen #penandink #mixedmedia #blackandwhite #arte #kunst #borderlands #lafrontera #landscapeart #NewMexico #Mexico #Texas #NewMexicoartist #LasCrucesartist #megfreyermuth #supportartists #wearetheborder #buyart #linkinbio #visualart #stolenland #visualartist #lapuertanegra

"We Can Still Bear Witness" This is a recent poppy sketch I made, based off a photo I took several years ago. I heard the quote above from an author talking about what artists can still do during this pandemic, and I wrote it at the bottom of this sketch. There is a social media-induced pressure on creators to do amazingly inspiring things during this pandemic. Some can do it, for their reasons, while others cannot... I have heard of some artists having a block during this time, and the best advice is to simply do what you need to do to get by. We are all on different paths, and we were each caught by this storm in very different situations. No artist should feel pressure during this pandemic to force creation or live up to societal expectations. For those who can create extra work right now, I envy you more than you realize; for those who cannot, I relate and have been there for months.... but an artist's block won't last, just like this pandemic won't. And "we can still bear witness" to what is going on around us, no matter when or how the art arrives. • • • • • • • #visualart #art #artist #drawing #draw #artwork #originalart #sketch #sketchbook #kunst #illustration #flowerart #botanicalart #poppyseason #poppies #superbloom #poppy #arte #coloredpencil #prismacolor #NewMexico #NewMexicoart #NewMexicoartist #newmexicotrue #LasCrucesartist #megfreyermuth #supportlivingartists #buyartfromartists #visualartist #bearwitness
