Anonymous arpillera artists, Hornos de Lonquén (Lime Kilns of Lonquén), 1979, Scraps of material hand sewn onto burlap. Arpilleras were made by groups of women in Chile as acts of resistance against Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship (1973-1990). The women stitched stories on scraps of fabric, often old food sacks and sometimes used materials from their ‘disappeared’ children's clothes. The arpilleras were then smuggled out of the country to inform the outside world of life under Pinochet. This arpillera depicts the discovery of the remains of 15 ‘disappeared’ men in industrial Kilns in 1979. Part of the Conflict Textiles collection, it's currently on loan to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Santiago de Chile. This Jukurrpa tells the story of a Japangardi man named Wamaru who lived at Jarrardajarrayi, an area of country near Purturlu. This Japangardi man lived at Jarrardajarrayi near a soakage called Juntangkalpa. He travelled south to Yarripilangu and approached a group of ‘karnta’ (women) that were sitting down in a circle there. He wanted to woo a Nungarrayi woman named Yurlkurinyi who was the wrong skin for him. Recently visited Unravel, an astounding exhibition of textiles art @barbicancentre. The theme: The Power and Politics in Art was curated with a clear narrative. A reminder of historical and current world conflict, and human creativity as a form of suturing. Some artists had withdrawn their work in an act of solidarity with Palestine, responding to Barbican’s decision (censorship ?) not to host a Lecture series. Others attached letters/additional installations stating their stance. Textiles, with its multiple living histories, is teased from the earth, recalls indigenous knowledge, slave labour, colonisation, trade, hybridity, subversive stitch, repair, contemplation and political protest. Draped over the entire front building, is an installation Purple Hibiscus by Ibrahim Mahama (scroll to pic 10). It was astonishing and wonderful to sit and stare at it in the sunshine amidst fountains on the lakeside terrace. Made in collaboration with 100s of craftspeople in Ghana, the work comprises a patchwork of traditional batakaris - precious robes passed down over generations. 1. Solace Pessoa, Hammock. Rags and canvas act as a carrier for living and decaying matter. 2. @yeeilann, Tikar/Meja. Pandan mat weavings with images of tables (symbol of Western patriarchal imposition). Mats symbolise democratic, mutual power. 3. Mrinalini Mukherjee & @ceciliavicuna 4. @igshaan.adams, Desire Lines. Selling your own artwork online isn’t easy. It’s a constant juggle of roles, being the bookkeeper, marketing manager, social media coordinator, customer service rep, website creator, packing orders, designing thank you cards, etc. On top of all this, you still need to find time to be the artist and create. It’s hardwork. Every day feels like a struggle to figure out what you should be doing and it can feel like such a lonely place. The todo list is endless, and it’s easy to get so bogged down in tasks that you forget why you started creating in the first place. Burnout becomes a real threat, and maintaining your mental strength feels like an uphill battle. It’s so important to remember that you’re not alone in this, many of us face the same challenges. Feeling overwhelmed is totally natural, and it’s okay to experience these moments. Every step forward, no matter how small, is progress. Keep creating and keep pushing through. I have felt connected to the Southwestern United States since I immigrated here with my parents in the mid 1990s. I have chosen to “plant my roots” in Phoenix, Arizona, and my ties to the Sonoran Desert continue to grow here. In 2021, ecoartspace launched a monthly Soil Dialogues on Zoom, moderated by Patricia Watts, to discuss ways in which artists can visualize and learn from an artistic practice engaging with soils. Since then, there have been over 100 artists active in these dialogues with 30 currently participating in a textile burial project, to observe how the underground microbial activity interacts with the fibers. These works and the stories behind them will be presented at a pop-up exhibition and conference session in May 2024 on occasion of the 100th anniversary of the International Union of Soil Science in Florence, Italy. We’ve been collecting & pressing found debris from local rivers and beaches, and making samples for our first commujity event on Saturday 8 June: A drop-in creative workshop at Collett Park as part of Collett Park Day. We have a stall at this popular family event in Shepton Mallet, Somerset. Really looking forward to meeting and working with whoever drops by at our stand. I had the loveliest evening at the opening of the Comme Ca X AWOL Open Call 2024 exhibition in Manchester last night. Beautiful, beautiful work, and so thoughtfully curated. Wish I'd taken more photos, but that just sounds like great excuse to pop back for another visit. Really recommend going to take a look, it won't disappoint. I was not diligent at all in making a note of the other exhibiting artists, I'm so sorry, usually I'm all over that kinda thing. I had my note book with me and everything!
