Yesterday while my husband was working in Victorville, he was lucky enough to see this big ol’ Union Pacific Locomotive. It’s the largest steam locomotive ever constructed and it had just been sitting for the last 50 years! It was just recently restored as it was originally built in 1941! Following from our previous post, one of the most poignant and moving exhibitions we have seen in a long time consisted of the works of the artist Zhi Lin. These works are based on the much under-told and appalling tragedy of the many thousands of Chinese migrant workers who died building the American railroads, and whose tales have been lost in time. Many thousands of miles from their families, their deaths were often unrecorded, and news of their deaths rarely reach their homelands... On the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, this exhibition specifically commemorates the more than 1200 workers who died from avalanches and explosions on the tiny stretch of the railroad in Sierra Nevada terrain near the Donner summit. Combining beautiful watercolours, silkscreen prints, Chinese prints, and video, these mixed media works from a profoundly moving and haunting memorial to these many anonymous deaths.
