✨”All Northwest” Composer Spotlight✨ A highlight of the concert is sure to be “Non si levava (after Monteverdi)”, another world premiere from our beloved composer-in-residence, John Muehleisen(@johnmueh)! The origin story for this piece is quite a fascinating one. At the suggestion of Dr. Joan Catoni Conlon—noted Monteverdi scholar—and at the invitation of our artistic director, Loren Pontén, with a generous donation from Brian Gorelick to fund this commission, John set to work on composing a contemporary counterpart to Monteverdi’s “Non si levava ancor l’alba novella”. The text of the piece tells the tale of two lovers awakening in the predawn light and their sweet laments at having to part at dawn. Using soft opening lines, with the chords getting brighter and higher as it gets closer to dawn and the sun moves higher in the sky, Muehleisen expertly sets the scene of the two lovers and the sense of joy and sadness at being in love but having to part ways. Opus 7 will be performing Monteverdi’s original setting directly before the world premiere of John’s piece to yield additional insight into the relationship between the two works. Come experience how the stylistic interpretations of the text are enriched by the pairing of these two innovative works, composed centuries apart. I first heard ODESZA’s music in 2013. Their first album “Summers Gone” was on their website for free and I downloaded it on a whim. That album quickly became the anthem of my teenage years. I would pull up to high-school blaring ODESZA in my beat up red mini-van feeling on top of the world. Flash forward 10 years to today - I’ve got a ticket to my hometown theater to see the odesza film The Last Goodbye Cinematic Experience on the big screen.
