Indian actor Neha Dhupia and Adil Hussain to be featured in director Ali El Arabi‘s forthcoming drama “Blue 52”, according to Variety exclusive report. Blue 52 will narrate the journey of a young Indian soccer fan, who travelled as a migrant worker to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The film explores Ashish’s journey towards meeting his idol Lionel Messi during the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The story follows his struggle of confronting his father and later encouraged by his mother, he escaped his secluded island residence in India’s Kochi, breaking free from all constraints. In the film, Dhupia and Hussain will play the role of Ashish’s mother and father, respectively and Yadav Shashidhar will be portraying Ashish’s character. In the beginning the project “Blue 52” was supposed to be a documentary, but now as the production for the drama wrapped, it became a scripted feature, also making it the debut feature film of El Arabi. Arabi made his first ever debut with documentary “Captains of Zaatari” at virtual Sundance in 2021. Captains of Zaatari follows the highs and lows of two boys, Fawzi and Mahmoud, as they try to follow their dreams of becoming footballers. They are Syrian refugees in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, where there are few opportunities, but football provides a way out. I’ll be honest, I saw the first few opening shots, with slow motion and plinky-plonky music and I worried the film might be sentimental. But it’s actually surprisingly empowering. It can be difficult showing the hardship of refugee life without it becoming one-note, and robbing refugees of the full roundness of their human existence. Captains of Zaatari shows the heartbreak of separation and exile, the frustration and poverty, but also the friendship, family, and community life of the camp. Fawzi and Mahmoud are still just teenage boys, with crushes on girls, and an obsession with football. And the film doesn’t show them as passive victims of this horrible war and displacement, but with agency in their own lives, having their own goals and pursuing them. As someone with no interest in football, it is still a compelling film, as you follow the human drama of seeing these boys reach for their dreams, and try to make their families and their people proud. As the talent scouts come to see them play in the camp, and doors open to play in an international sports academy, it is weird to see these kids who play barefoot on gravel be transported to hotels full of jacuzzi baths. Ali El Arabi machte sich als Kriegsjournalist einen Namen. Bei einem Besuch im Lager Zaatari lernte der Ägypter 2013 Fawzi und Mahmoud kennen. Beim ersten Treffen sagte Fawzi zu ihm: «Der einzige Moment, in dem ich mich nicht als Flüchtling fühle, ist auf dem Fussballfeld.» Vom ansteckenden Enthusiasmus der beiden Jungs berührt, kehrte El Arabi immer wieder zurück und knüpfte enge Beziehungen zu den beiden Jugendlichen, ihren Familien und den Menschen im Lager. Dies erlaubte es ihm, ihnen auch mit der Kamera nahe zu kommen – er sollte sie während sechs Jahren begleiten.
