đż đđ đ°đžđżđżđ đđž-đ±đŒđż đ Curated by Noam Alon Friday April 5th Until Saturday June 01, 2024 @galeriesultana Sultana Summer Set, Arles [email protected] The devil often whispers at night. Backbiting is seductive, and the villainâs allure shines brightly. In the Russian version of 101 Dalmatians, Cruella is called Stervella - a name that refers to the Russian word for bitch. The temptation to malice indeed spares no one. This exhibition is precisely in line with this untimely desire to indulge in cruelty for a moment, to give free rein to the pleasure of biting the other to the quick. The violent gesture can also bring relief. Have you ever wondered what fossilised rain looks like? This is from a series by @angelicamesiti "The rain that fell in the faint light of a young sun" (2022), part of the exhibition 'The Recent' at @talbotricegallery which is on until Saturday 17th. As the artist has explained, "these are imprints of raindrops preserved in stone from storms that occurred millions of years ago... The permanent evidence of a fleeting moment of weather on a young planet" It's a beautiful and thought-provoking show exploring art, time, ecology, geology and the natural world which I would definitely recommend seeing before it closes. What art are you seeing this weekend? #Encounters_Art #ExhibitionReview #AngelicaMesiti #TalbotRiceGallery #ThingsToDoThisWeekend #EdinburghThingsToDo #DeepTime
The oldest material of our planet, zircon, crushed and filmed in free-fall looking like the universe from whence it came; and prints and the sound of the rain, reconstructed from geological collections and listening to childrenâs play. These two works by Nicolas Mangan and Angelica Mesiti that bookend #TheRecent want us to think in deeper timeframes, do as the geologists do, and turn our attention to the deep future. #TheRecent closes at @talbotricegallery on Saturday so catch it if you can - these artists are an absolute treat to have in the gallery, filling our rooms and halls with images, scent, dance, music, luminescence and tactility of the geological memory of our planet. #EglÄBudvytytÄ, #HelenCammock, #DorothyCross, #ReginadeMiguel, #MikalaDwyer, #NicholasMangan, #AngelicaMesiti, #OtobongNkanga, #KatiePaterson, #MicolRoubini and #SimonStarling @talbotricegallery #talbotrice
What to see this week: The Recent @talbotricegallery which is free and on until 17th Feb. Would definitely recommend catching this before it ends. It's a group show which explores geology, deep time, the natural world and essentially reminds us that humans are just a tiny footnote in the planet's history. Some of my highlights were Angelica Mesiti's 'Future Perfect Continuous' which filled the gallery with the sound of a rain storm, only to reveal a group of people making those sounds themselves, inspired by a game the artist witnessed in a playground in Paris. I was moved and humbled by Dorothy Cross' 'Stalactite', a large-scale vertical projection of a young chorister singing like a siren beneath a 7-metre stalactite in Ireland that is thought to be over 500,000 years old. Pictured here is 'Diamonds', a new commission by Mikala Dwyer, bringing together a huge boulder of empty air which treads the line between heavy and light, besides a vivid wall painting which takes inspiration from stratigraphy. And there's the lovely @jennifercourt_art for scale! #AngelicaMesiti #DorothyCross #MikalaDwyer #EdinburghThingsToDo #ExhibitionReview #TheRecent #TalbotRiceGallery #Encounters_Art
Mathilde Roman - Habiter lâexposition. Lâartiste et la scĂ©nographie (2020) . « The medium is the message (Marshall McLuhan). STAFF PICK: Angelica Mesiti's 'Future Perfect Continuous' chosen by our Gallery Assistant Vira Putri! đŹ Why is this piece your favourite? "I remember when I was younger, I used to record the sound of rainstorms every time it rained. The overwhelming sound of a tropical rainstorm would distract me for ages as I tried to discern between the sounds of individual raindrops to multiple, and then zoning in and out to listen to the entire orchestra of rain, thunder and wind. Not only was this nostalgic recollection what drew me to this film, but it was also how it provides a teaser to an imagined reality where humans are not separate from the elements, but also asks how it looks like if we were to become a natural force, like the weather. Mesiti's film also celebrates this innate, primordial bond we have with the rain and the way it has shaped civilisation (from agriculture to potable water, globalisation, to the symbolism we project onto this element in art). Absolutely enthralling!" #StaffPick #AngelicaMesiti #FuturePerfectContinuous #Rainstorm

This week's staff pick of the week is Angelica Mesiti, chosen by our colleague Gillian McCay, Curator of the Cockburn Collection of Geology! đŹ Why is this piece your favourite? 'The rain that fell in the faint light of the young Sun' and 'Future Perfect Continuous' by Angelica Mesiti, are linked to nature's actions, which I feel deeply connected to. The fossilised rain prints in 'The rain that fell in the faint light of the young Sun' are objects that record an instant in time â individual raindrops of a single storm, and yet record a timeless and enduring force â the rainfall over millions of years. These images and the sound overflowing from 'Future Perfect Continuous' create a glorious sensory experience. Then when you round the corner, and suddenly the reveal of 'Future Perfect Continuous', you realise that the sound is not of rain but of clapping hands, which conjures thoughts of human hands creating a lasting impression on the geological record. As we live through the Anthropocene, human actions will leave much more extensive impressions on the planet's future than rain impressions in mud. #StaffPick #AngelicaMesiti #Geology #Anthropocene #RainImpressions
The Recent This exhibition explores what artists can do to stretch the human imagination, and locate us in a more expanded timeframe - one in which we might take action for not just our children and their children, but everyone who will come after us. Artists have shared work from around the world - some made here on site, etched into our walls and refracting their light around the galleries. Sound pulls you from room to room, and more than once since it opened Iâve found myself grabbing my umbrella to go outside, only to realise that the sound of Angelica Mesitiâs percussive choral rain-storm had fooled me once again. Itâs a show to wander around, let the artworks pour over you, or deep dive into the writing in the guide. Including notebooks and specimens from the Charles Lyell collection, âThe Recentâ shows that weâve known about the impact that humans are having on the geological processes of this planet for a very long time. Geology, hope, ancestors, games, asbestos, reproduction, diamonds, biology, lichen, bird-song, zircon, self-destruction, incense, symbiosis, renewal, extinction, boulders, tapestry, the universe, votives, stratigraphy, cyborgs, rain prints, wildfire, stalactites, first forest, last forest, fossils and the future. The team will be focussing on all the different artists over the coming months of the exhibition, so please follow @talbotricegallery if you want to see it all. Some shows are gathered on instinct, hunch, memory and faith, and when you sit down to write about the works, they offer themselves up and show you all the complexity and richness youâd felt in your bones. This is one of them. I love every single piece and hope you all come to see it. đđȘšđ #therecent #whatweowethefuture #talbotricegallery #deeptime #charleslyell Images: 1. #MikalaDwyer @mikaladwyer 2. #NicholasMangan @nicholas.mangan 3. #ReginadeMiguel @reginadmiguel 4. #AngelicaMesiti @angelicamesiti 5. #simonstarling 6. #KatiePaterson @studio.katie.paterson 7. #DorothyCross @dorothy_cross 8. #micolroubini 9. #OtobongNkanga #HelenCammock @otobongnkanga @cammockhelen 10. #EglÄBudvytytÄ @egle_budvytyte
Australian author Danielle Celemajer's thought-provoking tour #TalbotRice included readings from her book 'Summertime: Reflections on a vanishing future', which asks us to âlook around [and] become present to all beings who are living and dying through the loss of our shared home.â #TheRecent đ Keep your eyes peeled for future TRG Friday lunch-time tours! đŹ "I understand that Katie is seeking to find a way past what we might call âthe seduction of the imageâ â to get to us through smell, that most irrational, irreducible of our senses; the sense that has us experience ourselves not only in another place, but sometimes in another time â a childhood memory, a memory of connection, or love, or loss, or all of them. And through smell, not only to be present to loss, but also to love and the attachment that might have us wish to act in solidarity with the threatened." #KatiePaterson #ToBurnForestFire đŹ "How humans act now will be laid down in the geological record. To even think time this way [...]â and to do that in ethical terms demands of us a stretching of our imaginations and our sense of self. What is it to experience ourselves at that intersection? We meet ourselves there, perhaps when we stand in front of one of these mirrors." #MikalaDwyer #Diamonds đŹ "Looking at this piece of work, I am struck by the apparent paradox between something as light and ephemeral as rain, and the permanence of these impressions across time. This again takes me back to questions I raised earlier about the difficulties of coming to terms with, with grasping changes that can be so momentous, that can in fact change the geological record, but that in other ways, seem so fleeting." #AngelicaMesiti #TheRainThatFellInTheFaintLightOfTheYoungSun #TheRecent #TalbotRice #DanielleCelemajer #FridayTour

A little walk down memory lane today which I will spread over 4 posts! Itâs been fun reminiscing over this! Back in 2007, following a serendipitous meeting with Doug Wright, (Senior Lecturer in charge of Painting at the University of Ballarat), Mark conceived the idea of an Art Prize. It started as the seed of an idea over a bottle of red, and grew into the vision for a contemporary art prize which Mark and I committed to sponsor to be run bi-annually over 10 years. It would be open to contemporary Australian artists working in existing media and new technologies ânew artâ - whatever that meant at the time - and whatever it means now! Mark was really enthused by the energy that could be created at a national level - with the prize open to artists from all over Australia, and at a community level with the connection that could be enabled between Federation University (or back then the University of Ballarat) @feduniaustralia @pogallery and the Art Gallery Ballarat @artgalleryofballarat It took 6 years of discussion and planning for the vision to be realised. 10 years ago this April was the inaugural Guirguis New Art Prize (GNAP 2013) We celebrated our first winner Ash Keating with his multi-screen video - West Park proposition. The 2013 GNAP finalists were - @rebecca_baumann @ash_keating @richard_lewer @angelicamesiti @davidrosetzky @darrensylvester @paul.yore Fergus Binns Petrina Hicks Bonnie Lane Brendan Van Hek #rebeccabaumann #fergusbinns #petrinahicks #ashkeating #bonnielaneart #richardlewer #angelicamesiti #davidrosetzky #darrensylvester #brendanvanhek #paulyore Image đ· Ash Keating 2013 multi-screen video West Park proposition,
One last post from my backlog - some small exhibitions I saw at #nationalgalleryaus at the beginning of the year, I think they are now closed (I really should post more promptly) . 1& (đ on) 2: Project 3 #AngelicaMesiti - this video installation (the mock amphitheatre is part of it) was Australia's entry in the 2019 Venice Biennale*. The videos show people making music and moving/dancing in, mostly, Old Parliament House (though you'd have to be Canberran to recognise the location), at the time I found the experience of being in it (sitting in the amphitheatre feels like participating rather than simply watching) beautiful but weird, I thought 'I like this, even though I don't really get it'. Later I read the explanation and did get it, but was glad I didn't read the explanation first, the mystery of the piece is part of its magic 3: Project 2 #KaraWalker - it's confronting, as work about slavery should be, I found the images of slaves begging to be treated as humans particularly moving (oppressed people shouldn't have to beg, but the reality is that they do, that's what it means to be oppressed). The 'Project' in the title of this exhibition (and the Mesiti one) refers to its being part of the #KnowMyName initiative, I'm not sure if there will be more of these 'projects', but I hope there will be, and that they'll be as bold as this one (there are lots of women artists out there, NGA didn't have to feature one so confronting, or one working on a theme that's not directly relevant to Australians, but I'm glad they did, expanding our horizons is what they should be doing) 4: #BridgetRiley Dancing To The Music of Time - this site-specific wall painting is just a bunch of giant polka dots (quite unlike the motion sickness inducing Op Art Riley is known for), yet it's completely mesmerising, when you get close you realise that the dots are far bigger than they look, and each seems to have its own character! . #contemporaryart #visitcanberra #igerscanberra . * I went to the Biennale but didn't visit the Australian pavilion because I knew that NGA had bought this piece, I then spent over 2 years waiting for NGA to put it on display!

đ PORTRAIT23 ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT đ Next up is internationally renowned, Paris-based artist Angelica Mesiti! Angelica creates video installations that are absorbing and profound experiences for audiences. Her work ASSEMBLY, shown in the Australian Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, was later acquired by the National Gallery of Australia. Angelicaâs work explores collective actions, non-linguistic and non-human forms of communication, perceptions of time and space, and questions the anthropocentric model of the world. Her video work Future Perfect Continuous, exhibited at Anna Schwartz Gallery in Naarm/Melbourne in 2022, pairs a montage of young people using their hands to evoke the sound of rain with images of fossilised rain prints preserved in stone millions of years ago. Angelica has presented solo exhibitions worldwide, including at the Palais de Tokyo Paris, MAXXI Rome and MusĂ©e dâArt Contemporain de MontrĂ©al. đ Make sure to keep an eye on our socials for another exciting artist reveal! Protocinema Summer Series: đ ANGELICA MESITI Over the next few weeks we're looking back through our collaborations and commissions, to artists we've worked with through the years, exploring some of their artworks that teach us something. Angelica Mesiti: Citizens Band 2012 Four channel video installation. High definition video, 16:9, PAL, surround sound duration: 21mins 25secs. In Citizens Band, Mesiti shares with viewers intimate and dignified musical performances by four separate people. Each, lost in memory, performs music from his or her birthplace in the urban environment of an adopted home. LoĂŻs Geraldine Zongo, born in Cameroon, drums on the water of a public swimming pool in Paris, practicing the akutuk, or water drumming, taught to her by her grandmother. Mohammed Lamourie, an Algerian refugee, sings and plays a song by the assassinated RaĂŻ musician Cheb Hasni on the MĂ©tro. Bukchuluun Ganburged (Bukhu), a Mongolian throat singer, plays the morin khuur (horse-hair fiddle) on a street corner in a suburb of Sydney, and Sudanese-born Asim Goreshi whistles in the front seat of his Brisbane cab. Their accomplished performances carve out transcendent moments. Musical traditions and their performers find and make new homes while recalling the old. Deeply personal, quiet moments are made universal. Angelica Mesiti explores non-verbal communication and the transformations of cultural expression in video, performance and installation. Bree Richards, Curator of Contemporary Art Practice at the National Gallery of Australia, describes Mesitiâs videos as ârefined,â and writes that she âbears witness to enchanted moments of inner life with her camera.â Citizens Band was commissioned for NEW12 at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne. @angelicamesiti @annaschwartzgallery @galerieallen #ProtocinemaSummerSeries #AngelicaMesiti #PROTOCINEMA
For her new series of works Australian artist Angelica Mesiti sourced images of fossilised rain prints, which were then printed in black and white and further photographed against coloured backdrops. The result are images that appear accurate and uncanny at the same time. The series titled 'The rain that fell in the faint light of the young Sun' is now on view as part of Mesiti's third solo exhibition at @annaschwartzgallery, presented until 8 October. #angelicamesiti #annaschwartzgallery #melbourneexhibition #contemporaryart #australianartist #articulateloves

â Le livre photo âI heard that without pain, there ainât no gain.â a Ă©tĂ© rĂ©alisĂ© en collaboration avec AdĂšle Pavia @alaid_povio  @atelier_mesiti #angelicamesiti #claudeclosky #youngcontemporaryartist #beauxartsparis #fineart #artcontemporain #ecoledart #fineartschool #emergingartist #DNAP #artdiploma #VivreLaCulture @culture_gouv

» CrĂ©dit photo (1) : Sacha Boccara @sachaboccara @atelier_mesiti #angelicamesiti #youngcontemporaryartist #beauxartsparis #fineart #artcontemporain #ecoledart #fineartschool #emergingartist #DNSAP #artdiploma #VivreLaCulture @culture_gouv

» CrĂ©dit photos :@hortenser  @tayouland @atelier_mesiti @angelicamesiti #pascalemarthinetayou #angelicamesiti #youngcontemporaryartist #beauxartsparis #fineart #artcontemporain #ecoledart #fineartschool #emergingartist #DNAP #artdiploma #VivreLaCulture @culture_gouv
In âStill Lifeâ, a new group exhibition of 11 contemporary artists, imagination blurs with empirical observation. This exhibition celebrates the complexities of the natural world, emphasising the interdependence of living things and their shifting states of being. Angelica Mesiti presents her otherworldly âOver the Air and Undergroundâ in which the artist turns her exploration of communication and translation to forest communication, carried through the living systems beneath our feet and through the air around us. In the root structures and growth networks beneath forests, as well as through airborne processes, plant life is known to communicate â to share information about threats and pests, and to even distribute sugar to enable the survival of âthe communityâ, which forester and author Peter Wohlleben calls âsocial securityâ. Like Dutch vanitas paintings of old â still life paintings reminding viewers of mortality â âOver the Air and Undergroundâ is a meditative encounter that reminds us we are not separate from the world around us. âStill Lifeâ runs until 6 November, 2022 at Buxton Contemporary.
