Stimuli Opening: 13th July, 17.00-20.00 pm Dates: 14 – 21 July 2023 Curated by Meg Jones “Those who dare participate in ‘the experience of art’, experience it in more an ‘open-ended manner’ and become authors and generators of their own meanings” (Oliveira et al. 2003) The group exhibition Stimuli aims to challenge the deemed societal ‘norm’ behaviours when occupying a gallery space, by removing barriers and encouraging sensory interaction, prompting deeper connections to the displays and allowing a wider range of audiences to feel comfortable and understood by the institution that serves them as the public. The sense of touch combined with seeing is how we make sense of the world from infancy. So how is it that art institutions do not consider the use of tactility to connect to a more diverse and wider audience? This group exhibition showcases works from Anastassia Zamaraeva, Cara Smith, Charlotte Holt, Jamie-Lee Wainman and Phoebe Price, ranging in mediums to demonstrate the tactility of varying materials and offering a range of ways to experience art through play, smell, and touch. The works exhibited are created both for sensorial purpose, and others not but allowing the contexts of the artwork to be altered and offering a new way of seeing. K-House will transform to a traditional gallery space, with the interaction aspect directly contrasting the behavioural norms of this type of gallery. After the private view, the space will be closed off to public access, only available to view through the surrounding windows. This challenges the human desire to touch, and investigates feelings of isolation and alienation, in which many who experience learning, mental and physical difficulties often encounter in gallery settings. For its second public appearance I will be presenting ‘Mama Benin’, at Feelium Gallery with PAI32 @pai_32_. ‘WIND, SAND AND STARS’ is an exhibition inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s evocative vision: “Behind all seen things lies something vaster; everything is but a path, a portal, or a window opening on something other than itself.” The group show will be a mix of diverse media such as installations, video art, paintings, and sculptures from around the globe. We are all a part of a great network of stories that date back to when we were but dust in the skies above. There are a million voices and stories that flow within our blood. We are the hope of our ancestors, sung in songs around fires long ago. When we remind ourselves that we are more than just a name but the names forgotten long ago, we can hope and pray for those yet to come. My video for this exhibition is a project that seeks to offer fresh interpretations of our past and the complexities of heritage. Through this artwork, I explore the intersection of my practices - bringing poetry and image-making together, and themes of alienation, intersectionality, and black womanhood in the post-colonial era. Inspired by the Benin ivory mask, 'Mama Benin' is an ode to a lost matrical lineage, and forgotten connections, links that have been long dismantled by generations of colonialism. This performance expresses the feelings of isolation felt by a child of the diaspora, trapped in a void of darkness, suffocated by the weight of her own blackness - both a path to salvation and alienation.
