Whenever I travel domestically, I like to see if there’s an Audubon center nearby. Audubon runs its Mitchell Lake center on the south side of San Antonio, at the northern reach of the South Texas plains where mesquite spreads across the flats to the Rio Grande. Mitchell Lake is a riot of life on the edge of the city, with summing anhingas, giant snowy egrets and so much more bird life diving across the sky above the explosion of native flowers.
