What is low risk drinking? According to the NIH’s National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, it is ONE drink or LESS daily for women or two drinks or LESS daily for MEN. This is not an average; to stay low risk people should not exceed these levels on any given day. Also any drinking is risky if you meet their exclusion criteria, including being under age 21, taking medication that interacts with alcohol, being pregnant or trying to become pregnant, driving or planning to drive or operate heavy machinery, having a condition alcohol can make worse like liver disease, bipolar disorder, diabetes, hypertension, chronic pain or an abnormal heart rhythm. Also people who flush or become dizzy when drinking are advised that no amount of alcohol is safe because they lack the gene needed to process the alcohol metabolite, acetylaldehyde properly and it is a know carcinogen. This genetic variant is common in people from Asia so this issue is often called the “Asian flush”.
