๐ Imagine yourself coming into a room for a meeting. Reflect on how you enter the room. Do you arrive early, on time, or are you often late? Be honest about it! When you come into the room, do you close the door as quickly as possible, grab the nearest empty seat and drop your notebook, mobile phone, perhaps a drink, on the table? Or do you scan the room quickly before you sit down? When you join this meeting, do you think about how loudly or quietly you need to close the door, or do you just close it? Do you notice if anyone is speaking? All these questions relate to what is called the emotional wake that you are creating as you enter the room, and while you are there. The stage is where I feel at home. It took me years to figure this out even though it has been in front of my nose all the time. I still have to pinch myself when I look back to this time and the adventure I had in undertaking an expedition to the Norwegian Arctic Circle with nine other women led by Julie Lewis ๐ I hoped that the incredible experience would give me time to free my mind, get a fresh perspective on life, and return home with amazing stories to tell and I wasn't wrong. My reflections and learning... If you put your mind to something, you'll surprise yourself what you can achieve. Clear leadership and team work are vital components to achieving - whether in a work context or driving Huskies! Things don't always go the way you want, but by being adaptable and having resilience you can overcome most obstacles. Not only did I come away with so many leadership lessons reaffirmed, I also made friendships on the trek that will last a lifetime. Leading is all about taking risks, but what does that really mean? Here are a few thoughts on leadership and risk. As leaders climb higher, the pull to be cautious grows stronger. Yet, playing it too safe can hold back ambition. On the flip side, sticking solely to the known path has its own hidden risks. To create a thriving culture, leaders need to balance two things: Purpose: It drives us beyond our comfort zones, led by our vision and values. Safety: It gives us stability, allowing growth without fear. Focusing too much on safety could lead to stagnation, while chasing purpose without a thought for safety might burn you out. In my book Bold Reinvented, I share a story that resonates deeply with the challenges and breakthroughs in leadership: Operating from an unknown level: A client had been recently promoted to the leaderโs role. It was how she was rewarded after years of successfully executing tasks as a team member, functioning independently, working hard, keeping things under control, and minimising any possibility of mistakes.
