It’s always great to receive positive feedback from a peer - this really made my day! I was chatting with Jo Fitzgerald who filled out my diagnostic that looks at the strengths behind sustainable high performance. Too often we only think about part of the picture of performance which is about the results we produce. My diagnostic prompts leaders to think about the whole picture, including the things we do that enable us to deliver the results. That includes wellness, relationships, mindset, energy and more. When you have conversations with your team about performing sustainably, or when you think about your own performance, are you considering the whole picture? What if you might be missing parts of the puzzle? I’d love my diagnostic to create opportunities to widen our collective view of performance in teams. What does a high performing team actually mean for our team? And are we approaching our perfomance from a sustainable, long-range, whole human perspective? I love sport and I think about how sporting teams approach performance. To enable their players to perform over the whole season, they include things like mindset, connection, well-being, behaviours as well as skills and results. Their aim is to keep their best players playing the game over time rather than getting injured (either mentally or physically). That means they think of the player from a whole person perspective. When I pick a book, I only have one intention: to take away one thing, one lesson, one piece of gold. This year I have ( for the first time in my life really) stopped reading books that do not resonate with me. It is a challenging practice, and I still keep reading a few more chapters than I should. One reason is that I know how hard it is to write a book, and I want to honour the work, and another reason is that it ‘could’ get better. You never know – right? But the books that do resonate…they change, enrich and transform me. I recently finished The Midnight Library – Matt Haig. I am someone (and you may be too) whose current life looks nothing like what I was told it should be or what I believed it could be. I was supposed to accept what was expected of me, which was little, and I was supposed to take any crumbs I was given and be grateful for those crumbs. So not a day, NOT. A. DAY goes by where I am not thankful for the life I am living. This book has affirmed for me that we may as well choose the life we are living because there is no life where you are freed from being a human, living a human experience. What we can do is honour ourselves and our lived experiences, change ourselves (if needed) and take meaningful actions inside of the life we are living instead of hoping we have a different life. Isn’t it time to stop playing small through fear of what other’s might think of you? I see fear of judgement come up so often when working with clients, questions like but what will people think of me? What if I get it wrong? Will I look too big in that? Can I pull that off? Will people think ‘who do I think I am?’ And so many more! I experienced this for myself recently when I was shortlisted for a TedX audition from 120 people who applied, to 24 who were auditioned. I didn’t share with many people about it initially as I didn’t want to talk about it too openly, as running round in my head was ‘but what if I don’t get selected as a speaker?!’ Which ultimately comes back to that fear of judgement. From speaking to one of my friends in my network who is a coach and speaking expert (thank you @debbiebryancoach !) I realised I should be celebrating what an incredible achievement it is to be shortlisted, not concerning myself with the outcome! (i’ll find out in a couple of weeks!) I’m sharing this with you, as I think it’s so easy to get stuck in your own way and hold yourself back with your style as well. We have concern about what others will think, but we need to remind ourselves that other people are so caught up in their own thoughts and worries that they aren’t concerning themselves with our outfits! You’ll only look back with regret and think why didn’t I just wear that amazing dress or killer outfit, don’t let fear dictate your style. 👉 Imagine yourself coming into a room for a meeting. Reflect on how you enter the room. Do you arrive early, on time, or are you often late? Be honest about it! When you come into the room, do you close the door as quickly as possible, grab the nearest empty seat and drop your notebook, mobile phone, perhaps a drink, on the table? Or do you scan the room quickly before you sit down? When you join this meeting, do you think about how loudly or quietly you need to close the door, or do you just close it? Do you notice if anyone is speaking? All these questions relate to what is called the emotional wake that you are creating as you enter the room, and while you are there. When was the last time you did something for the first time? Or just broken out of routine? Pattern interrupt? Typically when I travel it’s a very systematic and clear routine. ✅check in ✅pass security ✅find gate ✅browse duty free ✅wait patiently for boarding Today I walked past the make up booth and out of nowhere thought - “I should get my make up done”. Then I immediately thought “no, that’s for larny girls, you know the pretty ones” 👀👀👀 what the what??? 🚫🚫🚫 I stopped myself before taking another step. I am literally en route to coach into over coming imposter syndrome and today I wasn’t going to let that little voice win! So opened my mouth and without allowing myself to back out started asking for a make up set. Long story short… they don’t do full make up thingys at the airport but I get my eyes done and took another BOLD step with a new popping colour! And I love it 💋. New found favourite because I didn’t let that pesky voice win today. So take a step. Be bold. Courage can be 10 steps or 1 step. But take the step. So many of us over the weekend described it as “filling up our cups” … being around other strong, incredible women is really uplifting. Such a supportive space with so many stories shared about what gets us through, what inspires us and what we are fighting for. Women in local government - we deserve to be at the decision making table, be heard and be respected. I worry that in the upcoming elections we will see less women putting up their hands. Many women I speak to talk about the torrid online abuse, the toxic beahviours in the chamber and the fatigue of a low paid role. Every now and then, I feel called to share one of my personal experiences. It may be something very small but the learning I take away from it has such a huge impact. I want to share this with you in hopes that you benefit as well. Not only that, I've learned that a couple of the most comforting thoughts I have are... Someone else gets it. Someone else gets me. So here is to me being that someone for you... I'll start with...I am 54 years old. I think I should have this all figured out by now. What exactly is "THIS?" "THIS" refers to LIFE. I should be the perfect manager. I should be the perfect leader. I should be the perfect everything. Being perfect means not making mistakes. Even though I know perfection is unattainable, I still think that I shouldn't make mistakes. What do I equate mistakes with? I'm doing it wrong. I'm not doing a good job. In other words, I'm failing. I'm failing my team. I'm failing my boss. I'm failing myself. So what does failing lead to... DISAPPOINTMENT In my mind, it seems so black and white. Either I'm succeeding OR I'm failing. AND I rarely give attention to when I'm succeeding. BUT stepping back I know failing is just learning. If I'm not failing, I'm stagnating. If I'm not failing I'm not growing. I'm not learning. I'm not evolving. Which means I would be missing out on the human experience. I would be missing out on the opportunity to be a better manager, a better leader, a better individual. We need to redefine our relationship with failure and mistakes. Failure and mistakes do not need to result in disappointment. They can lead to curiosity. And end in evolving. We don't need to have it all figured out. Otherwise, how would we grow and evolve. We would miss out on the ENTIRE human experience.
