Dear @nicholascullinan I love the @britishmuseum I’ve been going there my whole life - to pop in to say hello to my favourite artefacts on display, my kids having sleepovers in the museum, studying the history of the Benin bronzes, netsuke, Lewis Chessmen amongst other things for my @theopenuniversity degree, inspiration and research for work, not to mention the glorious @bbcradio4 History of the World in 100 objects… today’s experience made me rethink whether I ever want to visit the museum again. Why is the British Museum now like the inaccessible Met Museum in NYC? Who decided that indiscriminate queueing and being herded like cattle was the way to go? You have definitely pis*ed off your Bloomsbury neighbours as the queues in the rain snake all around the adjacent roads and force pedestrians to walk into the roads (which pis*es off cyclists, taxi and bus drivers). I was just popping in for the Michelangelo exhibition - probably an hour at most. Other times I’ve only wanted to see a few displays for research. It has now become some sort of behemoth tourist attraction like Madame Tussaud’s… as a Londoner I consider this building ‘mine’ not some timed tourist attraction - it is part of the fabric of the city. Nasz szósty dzień w Londynie! 🇬🇧🎩🗺 Zmęczenie materiału i tata zostaje gwiazdorem 💫. Są takie dni w podróżach z dziećmi, że zadajesz sobie pytanie: po jakiego gwinta Ty to robisz? No dobra, takich momentów jest dużo. Tym razem to nie był moment, a cały dzień, cały dłuuuugi dzień. Plan był dobry i jak zawsze ambitny. Niestety poprzedniej nocy Malutka obudziła się i chciała żeby ją nosić bo wcale nie bała się dinozaura 🦖. Oboje spaliśmy może z 3 godziny. Stwierdziliśmy - trudno, będzie co ma być. Mimo deszczu ruszyliśmy do British Museum. Przedzierając się przez wycieczki szkolne, sposobem na małe dziecko weszliśmy bocznym wejściem omijając kolejki. Wstęp darmowy, warto rezerować z tygodniowym wyprzedzeniem. Rozmawialiśmy z dziećmi przed lotem o kontrowersjach tego miejsca. Za namową dzieci przeszliśmy dział egipski, starożytną Mezopotamię, Grecję, Rzym. Tu zaczęło być już dla dzieci za dużo - "nie ruszaj i nie dotykaj". Masa ludzi, zero ławek, nie wolno jeść, apki na telefon mające zachęcić, nie działały. Zmęczenie, frustracja, głód. Przeszliśmy przez początki średniowiecza, ale no nie… Znaleźliśmy Shoguna w dziale japońskim i chyba najświeższą sprawę - Moai z Wyspy Wielkanocnej. Kiedy wyszliśmy średniak stwierdził: fajne to muzeum, takie duże, tylko co to wszystko ma wspólnego z samym Londynem i Wielką Brytanią? Jego pytanie otworzyło przestrzeń na kolejne dyskusje i edukację. W strugach deszczu stwierdziliśmy, że upolujemy jakieś dobre jedzenie na Convent Garden. Może by się udało, ale przypadkowo wpadliśmy na występ artysty ulicznego. Rozbawieni obserowowaliśmy wyczyny cyrkowca-komika na bicyklu. Tata nawet nagrywał, żeby Wam to pokazać i… nagle został wyrwany z tłumu, aby stać się częścią show. Jak się bawić to się bawić! Magiczny lizak zdobyty w czasie występu nie ukoił nerwów i zmęczenia. Pomogła ciepła herbata, bajki i nocny spacer po Regents Park. Kaczor, który podrywał łabędzie, nietoperze nad naszymi głowami i odrobina dystansu pomogły nam nie oszaleć. A Must See Rare Masterpiece! @britishmuseum Cartoon by MICHELANGELO titled 'Epifania' a full-scale preparatory drawing in black chalk on 26 sheets of paper which he produced around 1550. It is the only one that exists from his entire career. THE STORY: Michelangelo offered the cartoon to pupil Ascanio Condivi who developed it into a painting. Both works have recently undergone conservation and are reunited here for the first time since the 1550s (see images in this post). I interviewed Grant Lewis, Curator of ‘MICHELANGELO: the last decades’ for THE ART REVIEW and NEWS @londonlive He explains the cartoon depicts Mary in the centre, in conversation with a standing man to her right. Her left arm reaches back to Joseph, who has his arms crossed. The Virgin's right hand rests on her upper right thigh above the head of the young Jesus. This is a special exhibition where you can see studies for Michelangelo's grand architectural projects, drawings, poems and intimate letters that reveal his personal passions and anxieties. How can scents be described using words? I remember reading Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by #PatrickSuskind and admiring the vivid descriptions of scents. Scents are important and powerful; they can transport us to the past, to good or bad moments, they can remind us of almost forgotten memories. I've always been fascinated by pomanders. They're practical jewels, often worn or carried as protection against infection during pandemics or simply as a way to counter bad smells - which were abundant in old times. Germs were not known and it was believed that bad smells were infectious on their own. A pomander is a ball with small chambers inside, made for perfumes such as ambergris (pomme d'ambre - hence the name), musk, civet, cinnamon, lavender, cloves etc. Here are some examples of these interesting jewels. 1. A rare Dutch jewelled enamel and gold pomander, circa 1660. Sold at @christiesinc 2. Silver pomander in the form of a female head, in two hinged halves, with four compartments in the front and two in the back with a central lid engraved on one side and a suspension loop at the top. 17th century. In collection of @britishmuseum 3. Pomander from c. 1600, in the form of a skull. Made of gold and white enamel with rubies. Inside a sponge and compartments for perfume. In @rosenborgcastle 4. An early Victorian turquoise snake ring and pomander, circa 1840. Sold at @bentley_skinner 5. A German parcel-gilt silver pomander, 17th century. Sold at @sothebys 6. Наприклад, не кожен зможе чи захоче летіти тисячі кілометрів через Атлантичний океан, щоб побачити якісь скульптури цивілізації Майя у Мексиці. Michelangelo: The Last Decades This exhibition takes you on a journey through the final decades of Micheangelo’s life through a fascinating collection of sketches and correspondence. The exhibition presents a very intimate account of Michelangelo’s work and his circumstances which become particularly intriguing as the his life nears its end. His numerous sketches of the crucifixion are rich in detail and the different alterations in his sketches vividly capture the emotions of suffering and loss. The correspondence surrounding Michelangelo’s final days provides an insight into the very human end of a legendary figure.
